As I have already stated, I do not see a world where the Warriors just let Draymond walk so easily, and if it is indeed Curry's final year then I don't see how they don't make it a farewell tour without Draymond on the team. I think both sides will agree to a team friendly deal which I would propose a 3 year deal worth exactly $27,999,999, which is around the same ball park as what he would make this season if he accepts his Player Option ($27,678,571). With that said, this alleviates cap space to be able to be used and spread around for players in Free Agency. To start, the first and second apron are at $27,020,463 and $40,020,463 respectively, but with Draymond Green, Al Horford (retirement or pursue somewhere else), and De'Anthony Melton (decline to be a FA) declining their PO's the apron is now at $64,120,063 and $77,120,063.
Now that the cap space has opened for the Warriors to sign high profile players in Free Agency, they should look at the draft first and decide what they want. Do they want a wing or forward to immediately step in as Curry's robin or should they go after a down low, rim protector and lob threat? Having a tall center, rim protecting lob threat has apparently been Dub Nation's kryptonite ever since Steve Kerr has gotten there and even though the James Wiseman experience never succeeded, I think round two with Hannes Steinbach will commence. They will also draft a wing in Mark Mitchell in the late second round but will be a two way contract that I expect will eventually be a standard contract whether in the middle of the season or in the off-season in 2027.
The draft is now out of the way and a big man is on the team, let's start by re-signing players what better than re-signing Quinten Post to be the rookie's backup C. I am looking at a 3 year, $24 million contract that will be $8 million a year with a TO for his third year. With Post getting a contract, Pat Spencer deserves the same and I am looking at a little lower contract, but basically structured the same. Spencer will get a three year contract as well with a third year TO, but instead of $24 million it is $21 million which is $7 million a year. Both are beneficial for the depth on this team and both expected to get substantial minutes especially with Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody likely out for the majority of the year, if not season. After you get both settled, you move to get the old guys in Gary Payton II and Seth Curry vet minimum deals and that is it for re-signing players, besides both Malevy Leons and LJ Cryer return on two way deals but I think they are already contracted for the 2026-27 season anyways but wanted to point that out.
With these signings, I left five players out from being re-signed and let me quickly explain. Nate Williams was on a two way contract and has already played four seasons before the 2026-27 season and therefore ineligible for another two way contract and I don't see him fitting into this new roster which is why he is left out. De'Anthony Melton will decline his PO, and when he does that, he will go out and find somewhere else to play where he can chase for a ring somewhere other than Golden State. Charles Bassey just didn't make the cut because he doesn't fit the Warriors scheme in the first place. I kinda anticipate Al Horford to retire especially based off of the shortened workload he had this season compared to pretty much his entire career even the 2024-25 season where he played 60 of the 82 games. And finally, Kristaps Porzingis who don't see being in the NBA due to the uncertainity of his off the court health issues which affected him in the 2025 NBA Playoffs and may or may not been the reason why he only played 32 games this year outside of the fact he is super injury prone in the first place.
Now that the re-signing and assessment is out of the way, let's go ahead and use that cap space to build Curry's supporting cast and why not start with Coby White. White has been a phenomenal scoring guard for the Chicago Bulls for years and was recently their top option, obviously it was plain to see that he wasn't going to lead them to a Finals run as the top option when he couldn't get them to the playoffs. I think he fits perfectly in a sixth man role that seemed to work really nice for him in his short time in Charlotte that coming in and backing up Curry might be the much needed boost this team needs when the starters are on the bench. I think he deserves to get a four year contract and I am going to be a little loose and say $100 million will do the trick with $25 million a year. Next, the Warriors need a wing and I am looking directly at the top wing available in Quentin Grimes. Grimes has been a role player for most of his career and really took off the trade deadline when he was traded from Dallas to Philadelphia and that is what I am solely banking on is that he will perform to those standards as the starting SG for the Dubs. I will also give him a 4 year contract, but I am going lower than 100 as I feel like he should make it somewhat reasonable and come to a middle ground of $92 million, which is $23 million a year. And finally, as the fifteen man, I think there should be familiarity at the starting SF position and someone who can do these three things, 1. Lead a younger squad, 2. Able to start and willing to take a backseat when and if Jimmy comes back this season, and 3. Contribute in anyway the team needs him in. There are three guys that come to mind, but Klay Thompson is currently under contract and I don't see him being a legit option for them anymore and Andrew Wiggins has a PO that I expect him to opt in to, so the guy that I want is Harrison Barnes who has done a fantastic job in his mentor role at Sacramento and now at San Antonio. I am giving him a 1 year, $5 million dollar contract and will act as if this might be his last run as well and let him and Curry ride out in the sunset together. In total, Draymond Green helped save $18,345,238 to contribute in the signings of Coby White, Quentin Grimes, and Harrison Barnes.
After all of these moves, this did not save the Warriors from staying under the second apron, instead they went over. We are looking at close to -$13 million in the second apron and the first apron is roughly -$26 million. In reality, the cap does not matter this season as long as it is manageable because both Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler will be Free Agents after this season and will both save a combined $119,419,931 for the 2027-28 season. All of this is anticipation that this is Steph Curry's and let's just say it is, now you have a qualified roster that all you need is a top player, a top scoring option and maybe one or two pieces and now have cap space to go after anyone they want in a loaded Free Agency class, assuming a few of them decline their PO or decline extensions or both and can choose wherever they land, you just built Curry a goodbye present that might had helped them make a deep run in the playoffs or maybe win the Finals and now someone can walk in and fill in the gap Curry left and you still have room to sign one or more key players to your team. I also want to point out how there are no trades involved and that is because you can't really make trades. Nobody will take Butler and Moody due to injury and the severity and age for both, Curry is untouchable, and that leaves Podz, Richard, and Santos and what can you really get in return? This is honestly the best way to go about this team because of lack of trading on this roster currently.
