Highest ceiling of anyone in the draft, flamethrower scorer, crazy athlete. Needs to bulk up and be a little more conservative and defend a little more. Brandon Miller.

Ace Bailey seems like a really solid all-star potential foward that can fit into any team.

His scoring ability to find space is astonishing for any team to give them their offensive stability. His passing does let him down. Only 0.6 Assists per game for a SF is very low. He does make up for it with his scoring. He is currently averaging 18 7 and 1 this season. If any teams is in needing of a prolific scorer who can run the court and get boards and points is the right choice to go

Current Ranking: 3

Rating: B+

A long, athletic wing who is the best pure scorer in this class, Ace Bailey also has a crap-ton of things to improve upon. Solid 3-point shooter. He must use his physical tools better in the paint and on defense. He doesn't playmake off the dribble well and takes really bad shots. Needs to be more aggressive inside 12 feet and handle must get tighter. The ceiling is there, but the floor is low.

NBA Comps: Tracy McGrady

Pros:

  • Moving Jumper

    • This man does not miss any pull up, spin move, moving middy, take it from three if you want, fading away. Buddy does not miss and that just raw ability which is what makes top 5 picks in a draft. if you show raw shot making ability, it will probably translate well. it may be a little more inconsistent at an NBA level, but if you watch how he gets to his moves, his size is what allows him to make those shots. and size translates look at how KD gets his shots. Im very confident in this translating to the NBA level. Hopefully though we can get him to a point where he doesn't have to rely on finding that moving jumper to provide on ball offence and we can get him better looks at the basket or find more separation.

  • Off ball movement

    • good footwork, gets to his spot, makes catch and shoot opportunities. These are the things you see from top wings in the NBA. Being able to play off ball is something extremely valuable when building a roster around a guy. That's how he should primarily be used at the NBA level, off ball, you don't want to make him stress to much about taking tons of tough shots, you want to try supply him the easy ones.

  • Footwork

    • Uses his long legs to slide around on defence and follow his man, moves well to find his spots. Really fluid doesn't do anything extra but gets to his spots on offence and stays with his man on defence. With those base skill sets and his size he can expand very easily on is off ball offence and his on ball defence. And I think that's something we have been seeing from Ace this year, and that's using his feet to find open shots off Dylan Harpers play and passing. Getting reps in with a creative, ball dominant guard is really useful to me since I like to see him in a similar role to how I would play him if I was an NBA coach.

Cons:

  • Game IQ

    • Definitely a raw prospect, got the physical and shot making attributes but he doesn't seem to be able to mentally make it all work, wether that's just his on ball decisions or how his hands are moving on defence, he has some very worrying problems. He needs to be smarter with his handle, if he should pass earlier or take on the guy pressing up on him, he has gave up quite a few turnovers from these decision. His timing on his close out have costed multiple 3 point fouls on defence and fouling the jump shooter. something he has to brush up on. And finally the most worrying thing is his shot decisions and diet. Being able to make tough shots is great and it will translate but we want to see him get to the basket and drive harder. it should be easier for a guy with his size to get to the cup but he doesn't seem to be aggressive enough and that has shown. A lot of this stuff just feels mental though and something that can be easily worked on with the level of training staff in the NBA and with vets and experienced players. But he seems so far to be a somewhat project player.

  • Stats - Ace Bailey stats indicate him being a bust as of the moment. Most guys with similar advanced metrics don't end up being as good as ace Bailey is advertised to be. Although the stats don't look great, the eye test is much different, he definitely looks more impactful, but as the season continues it would be nice to see these stats improve and we can get a better idea of what he may actually be at the NBA level. Just like Harper, using advanced metrics are really useful to try find a comparison of the impact someone will have in the NBA in comparison to their college stats. recently Ace's stats have started to trend upwards, he's been having more consistent big nights for Rutgers and been very valuable as we enter a bit of a cold stretch from Dylan Harper, its good he shows reliance so that he can take up some pressure from Harper when stuff isn't going and he just needs a bit of aid on the offensive side to help Rutgers be competitive. That going to be valuable and interesting at the NBA level, to see if he can continue to have similar effects on his team.

Interesting factor:

  • Size

    • He has all the tools, long arms and legs and he uses it well. Getting his shots off over his opponents, making contests basically negligible. gets blocks on defence as well. uses his body stop guys driving on him. he seems to understand the benefits and how to use his body to his advantage. and guys like this seem to perform well at the NBA level. people who understand how to use their length to their advantage. if he can further improve the use of his body, he has all the tools to be a Top player in the league. Again size and athleticism is what's going to get an NBA team to buy into you and your potential, and even more if you see someone use it to the level Ace uses it, Similarly to how KD did it at Texas.

Conclusion:

Prospect Ceiling: All NBA 2nd - 1st team ceiling

Pick Range: 2-6

NBA Comp: Tracy Mcgrady but can't pass, Brandon Miller??

Best Fits:

  • Utah

  • New Orleans

  • Washington

High End: Danny Granger Low End: Kyle Kuzma with even less passing Median outcome: Rashard Lewis Pros: Tough shotmaker (generally just a good shooter on all areas), decent motor on defense and rebounding Cons: Very suspect handle (leads to concerns about playmaking), questionable shot selection, low rim pressure Verdict: Despite all the struggles (questionably low BPM), his shotmaking is just too tantalizing to pass up on. He has been able to hit open teammates from the shot gravity he produces, but he does leaves you wanting more. A lot of the passing issues are a bit overblown by critics as it doesn't help that Ace isn't surrounded by amazing shooting in this Rutgers team. However the moment Bailey can start creating for his teammates and stop being tunneled in, it changes his developmental outlook entirely.

Big upside but also high chance of bust. Could be a JR Smith type of player or a Melo. He has, in my opinion, the biggest range of outcomes possible in the lottery but the size and tools are still really enticing.

NBA comp : Rashard Lewis/Jabari Smith jr

Pro Comparisons: Tracy McGrady, Michael Porter Jr

Ace Bailey is, without any question in my mind, one of the most polarizing prospects I’ve seen in quite some time. There are people who will tell you that he should be in the conversation for being the best prospect in the draft period, but there are also people who have him towards the back end of the top ten in their rankings and view him as someone who could fall even lower on their boards. I can see myself agreeing with either camp, and I don’t really know what to do about that. Ace is a weird prospect who can be equally exciting and frustrating. The one thing that should not ever be under discussed is the obvious potential that he has though, which is largely what keeps him a contender for a top five-ish spot on my board. There are very very few players at his size in NBA history who are as good of a shot maker and difficult shot maker as Ace is. He has special touch as a shooter, and contests don’t seem to bother him one bit. He takes some of the most wild, difficult shots you could possibly imagine happening in a regular offensive possession (which says something else about him, but more on that later), and somehow he manages to make those shots pretty consistently. I have not come across very many prospects at his age who are capable of making shots that have the degree of difficulty that Ace takes. That is something that is very worth noting in any discussion, no matter where your opinion falls on that scale I previously mentioned. While there is obvious appeal with his ability to make toughs shots, it also speaks to his poor decision making and his poor advantage creation. Ace takes a lot of those shots because he simply is not capable of creation space for himself consistently. His handle isn’t terrible, but it has no creativity. He relies on his athleticism (which has its own issues) to get to his spots, but he isn’t using it to create advantages for himself enough. He is perfectly fine with taking a low percentage shot, such as contested mid-range jumper, because he knows he can make those shots. However, I think his ability to due this will be reduced in the NBA where he isn’t always one of the biggest or most athletic players on the floor. He’ll need to develop a more creative handle and improve his decision making in order to reach the lofty expectations that have been set for him and to become a true star in the league. A lot of people that I have talked to seem to have little faith in him being able to do this, but I have optimism. I think a lot of his decision making woes are rooted in bad habits that he developed in high school. Shots that aren’t high percentage shots for him now were high percentage shots for him in high school. He was usually bigger, more athletic, and more talented than any player he played against, so those shots came to him easily. He was damn near unguardable because of the clear talent and athleticism gap between him and most of his opponents. I believe this put him in the habit of taking those kind of shots, and it’s what he knows how to do best so of course that habit would continue at the college level. I believe in his character and drive enough to believe that he can and will break out of some of those habits, at least to an extent, under good NBA coaching. He also will have to improve some of the actual skills in order to improve his creation ability, but he is young and has a lot of time to work on that. So while his shot selection and decision making is concerning, I believe that he can improve that in the NBA and break out of those bad habits. However, I also won’t say that there is zero possibility of him never improving in those areas. Bad habits and deficiencies can be very difficult to break, even with strong mental fortitude and determination. Ace will need to work very hard to improve his decision making and advantage creation in order to maximize his potential, and there is always the possibility of that not happening. One thing must remain clear though. Even if everything else fails (the shot selection and advantage creation doesn’t improve, inconsistency as a defender and unwillingness as a passer never improve), he will always have that difficult shot making to land on. I believe that he will be able to have a role in the NBA simply because he can make shots that not very many people can make, and his dynamic shooting as a big wing can give teams lineup versatility. His projectable floor certainly is low in my eyes, but I don’t see many scenarios where he completely fails to find a role in the league.

I want to talk a little bit more about his passing ability. Earlier, I eluded to his unwillingness as a passer. Notice how I didn’t say he was a bad passer. It’s really odd to find a scenario like this, but I actually think he has solid ability as a passer. He doesn’t make advanced reads or has spot on accuracy, but he has shown that he can make solid passes that you expect/hope a connective piece would make. The problem is that he would much rather take a shot than pass the ball. I wouldn’t necessarily define him as a “the possession ends with me” player, but it does feel that way a lot of the time. He averages less than assist per game, and far more often than not opts for taking a shot rather than passing the ball. This is something that really concerns me. There is not much room in the NBA for players who are pure bucket getters anymore. Teams expect their players to have more versatility and ability in multiple areas offensively. This is especially true with the focus on 3-point shooting in the NBA. A player like Ace Bailey, who would much rather shoot the ball than pass it, is rare in the NBA these days. This has the potential to become a very big issue for him. You have to be a top tier, elite scorer if you want to survive in the NBA with severe unwillingness as a passer. Ace has the tough shot making ability, but as I previously stated his advantage creation and shot selection are not good enough for me to truly buy into him being that caliber of scorer in the NBA, at least not right away. With his unwillingness as a passer, he is going to have a tough time surviving as a top 2-ish scoring option longterm unless he improves it. I can see a world where he ends up being played more exclusive as a movement shooter rather than an on-ball creator if his passing willingness doesn’t improve. Like his decision making and shot selection, I have hope for this improving, especially since I buy into his actual ability as a passer being pretty solid. It’s something very worth noting though, and this may be what could possibly limit his potential the most.

more analysis will be added soon
