Anthony Black: 6'5.75" 210 lbs 6'7.5" wingspan 12.8 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 3.9 apg, 2.1 spg, 45.3% fg%, 30.1% 3%, 70.5% ft%.

Anthony Black is a talented rim attacking point guard with superb positional size that allows him to be an elite point of attack defender. Black played on an Arkansas team that was talented but could not shoot from 3. This led to him facing packed in defenses which made his knack for putting pressure on the rim, reaching the nail very impressive and allowed him to display impressive vision. Black did not shoot well and has a funky release but early in the season showed good touch from deep. Black is of the mold of jumbo facilitators who is uber competitive and will do anything to make a difference in the game for his team, whether on offense or defense. He fills stat sheets.

Strengths:

  • Positional size. He is a true point guard.

  • Fabulous point of attack defender that has the size to defend multiple positions.

  • Slashes to the rim with ease and creates for others.

  • Good vision even if assists sometimes lacked due to poor shooting.

  • Gets to the free throw line a lot. 5.3 FTA per game.

  • Was effective in the pick and roll game even in a condensed court. Should excel in that role in NBA.

  • Rebounds very well and makes other intangible plays that win games at high level.

Weaknesses:

  • Not a good shooter. 70% from FT line, 30.1% from 3 and 32% on all jumpshots.

  • Doesn't create a ton of space in isolation, relying mainly on going down hill using long, rangy strides.

  • Can be tentative and over pass causing turnovers or worse shots (3 turnovers per game).

  • Reliant on playing with advantages at times vs teams with better athleticism.

Swing Skills: Anthony Black should blossom offensively in the NBA due to vastly better spacing than there was at Arkansas as well as the prevalence of pick and roll play which is where he was at his best. That said, his swing skill is can he develop his shot from both the catch and shoot as well as from off the bounce. Black will not be a top option offensively but is NBA ready to contribute solid minutes conducting the show and defending the point of attack at a high level. Should he develop the shot, you're looking at a long term high level starter with All defense potential.

Tier: Long-Term Starter

Player Comparisons: Josh Giddey, Shaun Livingston

Anthony Black is a very big 6'7" guard. He can play above the rim is has decent speed. He's a great ball-handler and passer. He can play point guard, shooting guard, and wing. He's unselfish and almost always makes smart passes. He's got a great jump shot and is a very solid shooter. He's a pass-first player but can definitely shoot well. He's got time to refine and develop his 3-point shot even more but that will likely never be the focal point of his skill set.

Bio: Arkansas, January 20, 2004 (19), 6’5.75”, 210 lb, Point Guard

Stats:

Strengths:

  • Great positional size

  • Playmaking & passing IQ

  • Ability to get steals

  • Underrated athleticism

Weaknesses:

  • Not a high impact defender

  • Inconsistent shooter

  • Settles for the floater over getting to the rim

Rundown:

Anthony Black will be a great lead guard for the team that selects him. His strong playmaking ability, and his touch from inside the paint make him a constant offensive threat. Many scouts won’t be enamored by his defense, however, he has an uncanny ability for getting steals. His shooting is going to need some work for him to build a fully developed offensive game, but there’s a good chance that that will come with time.

19.4 year-old 6'7 PG/SF/SG. 2-Way Playmaker. Black knows how to make an impact on both ends of the floor. Offensively, his handle, decision-making, and passing ability allow him to lead an offense as the primary ball-handler. He's also effective off-ball, with smart movement and backdoor cuts. He's good at driving to the basket and getting to the FT line, but the jumpshot is unreliable and he struggles to create shots that are not around the rim. Defensively, he's very good at forcing turnovers and disrupting passing lanes. His size and athleticism allow him to effectively guard 1-3 (and maybe some 4).

Strengths:

+++Versatility

++Basketball IQ

++Passing

++Handle

++Perimeter Defense

+Inside Scoring

+Draw Foul

+Steals

Weaknesses:

---Shooting

--Shot Creation

-Scoring Versatility

Shades Of:

Dyson Daniels, Josh Giddey, Lonzo Ball, Cade Cunningham

Ceiling: Starter, 2-Way Playmaker

Floor: Starter, 2-Way Playmaker

Team Fit:

Black's versatility allows him to fit in well just about anywhere. Being surrounded by good shooters would be helpful, as one of his greatest strengths is driving and dishing to an open shooter. Black doesn't necessarily need the ball in his hands, but it would nice to see him start his career somewhere he can get some NBA reps as a lead guard.

Best fits within range: Washington, Utah, Orlando, New York, Toronto

Anthony Black is everything a team could want in a modern guard. He is ultra-versatile on defense and possesses great playmaking instincts for his size. At 6’7”, he towers over his peers at his position and really plays like a true distributor on offense. He would have times where he would come in and take over the game scoring wise but this would always be pretty calculated. He knows when he needs to adapt his role for the good of his team. Most of the time he steps onto the court trying to create offense for his teammates rather than himself and is just an overall super unselfish player. He clearly is a very intelligent player and has a high on-court IQ. He reads the floor exceptionally well for a player of his age with his experience and it seems that he is only getting better as time passes and he continues to find new situations to adapt to. He changes his pace to throw off opponents. He makes it so other teams can’t compete with his timing by speeding it up or slowing it down. He targets other teams sloppiness and attacks open passing lanes. He works well as a playmaker in both transition and the half-court which is a rare skill to have that NBA teams usually have to teach one or the other to prospects. He played Quarter back in high school so he has experience as the primary decision-maker in multiple sports. He doesn’t just look to find immediate shots. He really looks to move the ball around in the flow of an offense. He makes effective and intelligent plays with the idea of enhancing rather than scoring. He swings the ball around to shooters very well and could find himself taking a jump once he’s out on a roster with more space. The downfall of Arkansas was that injury prevented their team from finding a shot rhythm which prevented Anthony from really capitalizing on his capabilities. He works well on pick and roll because of his passing and his finishing which is made possible due to his size. He can be a lead guard from day one and will look like an aged veteran right away. As a scorer, he is good but nothing special. He’s a nice shooter with a stroke but he isn’t a great one. Anthony doesn’t have the same feel from his playmaking when it comes to creating his shot but he’s nothing similar to a non-creator. If his outside shooting and feel for shot making improves he could be a big-time star but right now it’s okay, which is okay. All he needs to be when it comes to bucket-getting is an alright shooter that can pose enough of a threat to give himself enough of an opportunity to create for others. Anthony is decently athletic for his size and can make the cuts and feats that most guards can’t do but is not really above average or anything like that. One trait I do like about his offense which is a positive because he doesn’t have this negative is his lack of turnovers. Although he might have the occasional play that feels like it might not be going anywhere that most young guys have, he never really makes a dumb play that results in a turnover. Simply not giving the ball to the other team is a big positive at his age that is pretty uncommon for prospects, let alone younger freshmen. Defensively he is really good and versatile. He’s a nice lengthy on-ball defender which you could infer by just looking at his physical profile but what's nice is his intelligence as an off-ball defender. Similar to his offense, he knows how to read the other team's scheme. He is good at watching his man, the ball, and other off-ball players all at once. Good at knowing when to switch and initiating it to make defense easier for his teammates. He doesn’t make the accidental over-sag off that a lot of younger players often make. Anthony is great at stopping easy baskets for his opponents and when it comes to physicality as well. His size stops him from getting bulldozed by his man when they try to drive to the basket. On the perimeter, he can hold his ground and keeps his feet planted well. More often than not, he ends up getting steals rather than getting beat when his man rushes for the rim. He has a real knack for creating opponents turnovers and uses his long lengthy wingspan to disrupt. That ability to get the ball back so quickly helps to create those aforementioned transition opportunities that he’s so good at facilitating, whether it be as an attacker or a distributor. Teams will fall in love with his way of impacting both ends of the floor at such a high level for his age and size. Guys like Dyson Daniels have risen up draft boards despite not putting up huge counting numbers for similar reasons. Anthony Black is a really good bet as a safe guy with a high floor and a nice ceiling. General Managers should feel comfortable with investing a high draft pick in him as they could be getting an immediate starter.

He’s greatly improved as a defense in college and looks great in that area. He’s proving that he can play 1 through 3. He’s an elite playmaker which is easily his biggest strength. He has driving upside despite playing in an offense with poor spacing. His self creation isn't great.

More athletic Josh Giddey. Felt the same way about Lonzo Ball after college. An athletic glue-guy who always makes the right plays. A defensive wizard, always stays in front at the point of attack. Very impressive for a 6'7" player. Active off-ball defender who is always at the right spots. Boxes out and helps teammates finish possessions with timely rebounds. Offensively, he is a jumbo initiator with great feel for the game. Great passer, who always moves the ball to open spots. Has some self-creation off the dribble. Has shown he can get to the rim with decent ball handling. Not the best shooter, has a push shot, but can improve.

Anthony black- Arkansas (SG/PG) Age:19.4yrs 6’7 195 (Josh Giddy/Dyson Daniels)

The length at the point guard position is amazing for Black. He utilizes it well to find open teammates and is able to use his length on defense to harass players on the ball, get into passing lanes and switch onto bigger defenders. He does need to improve his 3 point shooting just 30% on 2 attempts and needs to work on his form. Black also needs to be more aggressive sometimes in looking for his own shot as too often he would disappear on the offensive end if it wasn’t just trying to set others up. His first step is not great when driving around defenders but should be able to use his body to shield them off.
