Cody Williams has the potential to be one of the most versatile two-way players in the NBA. He is oozing with potential as a shot creator, passer and defender. He does have some glaring weaknesses: his off-ball defense isn’t great and he isn’t very assertive with the ball in his hands right now. Those issues fixable though, and there are so many positive signs with Cody. I believe in his upside, and I think his shooting, off-ball offense, and IQ give him a higher floor than most prospects in this range.

May: been worse since injury, still think he brings a lot to the table and he’s a very talented player but I’m around the same spot I had him earlier, even with others lowering him. He’s gonna be in the g league early in his career I’d bet, but with the success of his brother and his talent, he has the upside to be a very good player. However he could very likely just not pan out. Big time boom or bust to me

January: I don’t know what to think about Cody Williams because I don’t think he can create. I know he’s a great finisher and transition ball handler and a decent passer and an ok ball handler. I’m very unsure about his role on offense. His shooting is weird, he’s 50% from 3 but only 12 attempts all season. He has no confidence for taking pull up threes. He doesn’t search to creat advantages, instead scoring mostly on attacking closeouts. I really don’t think he will be able to create in the nba due to that and his lack of confidence pulling up, even though he’s a pretty good shooter. He could be a decent wing who attacks closeouts and takes open threes and plays defense, and that’s a pretty good player but I don’t see the high volume creator upside or him becoming elite at any role. His defense is decent, he has long arms and he’s good on ball but off ball he’s very poor.

He won’t be elite on defense because he lacks elite athleticism and off ball awareness. He won’t be an elite shooter because he lacks confidence. He won’t be an elite slasher because he lacks strength and athleticism (this is the one I’m least confident about). He won’t be an elite passer/playmaker because he’s been sloppy with passes and seems r lack awareness and vision. I don’t feel confident in any facet on Cody’s game and for that, I can’t rank him very high.

(as of 2/15/2024)

it's not hard to see why cody williams is so liked as a prospect.

  • he's young (19 on draft night),

  • has good length (6'8 with a 7'3 wingspan),

  • is an excellent finisher and aggressive when getting to the rim,

  • has a lot of potential to be a good passer,

  • looks comfortable handling the ball,

  • looks comfortable without the ball too, always being active on the court trying to find ways to get open and get some points,

  • has a decently quick burst,

  • has defensive upside,

  • and has a good fg% (56.2)!

-- / --

this isn't to say he doesn't have his flaws though.

offensively;

  • even though he's shooting 46.7% from three, i don't trust his three-point shot. why? he's 71.2% from the ft line. not to say that's an awful ft%, but it raises some eyebrows as to how consistent his shot will be at the next level. while i'm not completely sold on his three-point shot, i am with his mid-range, floaters, or any shot inside the arc.

  • ^ another reason as to why i don't really trust his three-point, albeit a little minor, is that he doesn't have a lot of self-creation while on the perimeter. most of the shots he took from three were catch-and-shoots. he didn't make one move to create space and get a shot up, the only time he would make a move was to drive to the rim. that's fine, it just doesn't make me think any more highly of his ability to shoot from far.

  • for every assist he had, he also had a turnover (he basically has a 1:1 ratio on the dot). currently, cody is averaging 1.9 to's a game. from what i can tell, most of his turnovers come from him not being able to handle body pressure that well. this is part of a much bigger concern, his weight. he's only 190 pounds. i could easily see him getting big bodied by other forwards, and him struggling to do the same.

and defensively:

  • ... he's just not that good defensively right now. he shows flashes of being able to play defense, but he still has a lot to improve on.

  • currently, he's averaging 2.2 fouls per game. i think the main reason for this is that he jumps a lot. he tries to utilize his length to block the ball, which is good, but he often doesn't get anything out of it and just fouls his opponent. another reason though that he might be fouling a lot is because he gets blown by when guarding the perimeter. smaller guards just get past him way too easily. he falls behind, tries to block them from behind, and ends up pushing them and fouling them.

  • ^ him getting beat by other guards is part of another issue he has, which is that he reacts a little slowly to movements. he looks significantly slower on defense than he does on offense. there were a couple of clips where his opponent made a move on him, and he took like 2 seconds to react to it. and when he finally did react to it, it was too late, and his opponent already had a shot up. i think he's been improving on this aspect though. more recently he looks more focused and quicker on defense, but it's still something worth noting.

  • ^ he might also look slow on defense because a lot of his defensive clips look like he's not putting much effort into guarding his opponent.

  • i saw him struggle to get off screens and go around them.

  • he would also get tangled up with his teammates(?) when guarding someone. this wasn't just a one-time thing, i saw this happen multiple times. he just looked like he was lost.

  • he's not very active on boards. i would like to see him use his length more on rebounds, both offensively and defensively, but this is one of his more minor issues.

-- / --

cody is a high floor, low ceiling guy. i think he'll be valuable at some point in the nba, but it might take some time. he’ll need to improve his defense, limit his turnovers, and gain some more weight. he’s only 19, he has plenty of time to improve 🤷🏽

The most interesting prospect to me so far. A skinny 6ft 8 ball handling wing with driving upside, elite touch, and defensive upside. He uses his strides well in the open and half court. This is where he has his most success as a driver. He has a solid handle but isn't creative, this is the major area of his ball handling I'd like to see him improve on. He plays bigger than his frame, he takes contact well and draws a lot of fouls. He lacks the burst to separate from his man so he usually tries to initiate contact first and go up strong. He is an elite finisher, he favors his right hand but he can score with both. Great touch close to the basket, would like to see him attempt more floaters, I think this is an area that can become a strength. I think undoubtedly he'll be a wing in the NBA, but Colorado trusts him to take the ball up the court. This is where we see him in a playmaking role. This is where I have a question mark on his game. He doesn't have bad vision, he usually finds the open man but I didn't see any reeds that really popped. I think one day he can be a solid connective passer, he isn't terrible right now, but he has a very low assist numbers in a solid shooting offense. Another major question mark on his game is his shooting. He is currently shooting a ridiculously high clip from three but on very low volume. His free throw percentages aren't great and his form isn't bad but it also isn't textbook. He isn't versatile as a shooter at all, I looked at all of his threes this year and they are all catch and shoot. A high end offensive outlook for him would be a driving wing with 3pt shooting and passable connective passing. I also saw some cutting from Cody, he attempted to find the openings in the defense and face cutted to the rim. If he develops more creativity off the dribble, starts ramping up the volume from three, and becomes a more frequent cutter, he'll be very solid. He will need to put on weight if he wants to finish in the NBA like he is in college though. On defense, he's solid on the ball, he isn't quick laterally but yet he's versatile enough to guard most guards due to his recovery speed. He'll need to gain weight to guard the NBA wings, but I project him to be solid at that eventually. The glaring flaw in his defensive game is his off ball defense. I see a vision of him having some weak-side rim protection, but his current tactic off ball negates that. He either completely sticks to his man not in help, or is over helping and allowing a wide open three. He also ball watches a ton, he allows easy back cuts when he isn't paying attention. If he doesn't clean this up he'll be exposed in the NBA. He flashed some activity in the passing lanes so that's a good sign. Overall defensively, he'll need to put on weight. Cody won't be a good defender coming in to the league and he will need to be more active off ball. His upside on defense is a major reason he is getting considered so high. He has good length and versatility, if he can develop some weakside rim protection he could hit that next tier. A high end outcome for him could be an all star, and if that's not the case, I'm confident he'll be impactful for some team in his NBA career. He needs to be able to knockdown the three and use his handle more effectively if he wants to hit his ceiling on offense. His length and fluidity make it easy to look past some athletic limitations. On defense, he will need to gain weight and be more active off the ball. I don't think he'll be good to start his career, but he's too good right now to called a project, just a bit raw. I don't think he'll ever be a number one option, but he has the makings to impact winning at a high level.

  1. Cody Williams - Colorado (SF - HT: 6’8” -

    • Big versatile on-ball wing who can play 1-4 on O and D like his brother

    • Basically plays PG for Colorado, really good ball handler and solid playmaker

    • Really good perimeter defender, lots of length and lateral quickness

    • Decent shooter but hesitant - not a strength

    • Athletic and quick, could work on strength

    • Solid rebounder, will be better with added strength

    • Easy to see him being very good

    • Needs to work on on-ball wiggle and creating space - doesn’t create advantages on the ball despite his good passing - he’s quicker on defense than offense due to a problem with his basic handle not allowing him to get to top speed

    • Needs to work on shooting

    • Shades of Justin Holiday, Jaden McDaniels Range: 3 - 12

Overview:

Cody Williams is a 6'8", 185-pound freshman wing from the Colorado Buffaloes who's rapidly establishing himself as a potential top-five pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. His smooth skillset, size, scoring prowess, and basketball IQ make him a versatile weapon on both ends of the court. He's the younger brother of Oklahoma City Thunder's Jalen Williams, further adding intrigue to his already impressive rise.

Strengths:

Versatile scorer: Williams boasts an offensive arsenal that can light up opponents. He can create his own shot off the dribble with a smooth handle and good footwork, finish through contact with impressive body control, and knock down open threes with a silky stroke. He also utilizes his size effectively to score inside out of the post.

Passing and court vision: While scoring is his strength, Williams is also a capable playmaker. He finds open teammates with smart passes, especially in transition, and demonstrates good court vision for his age.

Solid size and length: At 6'8" with a long wingspan, Williams has the ideal frame for a modern-day NBA wing. This size allows him to guard multiple positions, rebound effectively, and finish above the rim on offense.

High basketball IQ: Williams plays with a cerebral approach, making smart decisions with the ball and understanding the nuances of the game. He reads defenses well, anticipates plays, and makes the right pass often.

Weaknesses:

Strength and physicality: Although skilled and athletic, Williams needs to add more muscle to his frame to truly hold his own against NBA power forwards and handle the increased physicality of the league. This will improve his rebounding, ability to finish through contact, and overall defensive presence. Three-point consistency: While his shot form is smooth, Williams' three-point range and consistency need some work. He can hit open shots effectively, but expanding his range and becoming a more reliable threat from deep would further elevate his offensive value. Defensive consistency: While his physical tools bode well for future defensive success, Williams still needs to refine his technique and footwork to become a truly impactful defender. He can struggle against quick guards on the perimeter and needs to develop his anticipation and help-side defense skills. Overall:

Cody Williams is a high-ceiling prospect with the potential to become a franchise cornerstone in the NBA. His size, skillset, basketball IQ, and overall feel for the game make him a truly special talent. If he can add strength, improve his three-point consistency, and refine his defensive skills, he could blossom into a dominant two-way wing capable of leading a team to championship contention.

Additional Notes:

Williams is known for his dedication and work ethic, constantly striving to improve his game and take on the guidance of coaches. Some scouts compare him to a young Scottie Pippen due to his size, versatility, and defensive potential, while others see him as a more offensively-oriented player in the mold of Brandon Ingram. His ability to play multiple positions and contribute on both ends of the court makes him a valuable asset for any team seeking a high-impact wing. Overall, Cody Williams is a must-watch player in the lead-up to the 2024 NBA Draft. He has the talent and potential to make a significant impact on the league for years to come.

Sam Vecenie Draft guide He combines that size and frame with fluid movement, athleticism, deceleration and body control. He’s great attacking in transition, where he can grab rebounds and immediately go on the break to attack the rim.

Like his brother, he uses his length to extend and finish at an elite level. He made 74.1 percent of his shots at the rim this season, the top figure among all non-bigs in this draft class. Prior to his late-season ankle injury, Williams averaged about three attempts in half-court settings per game, a high rate given his limited usage. He can finish with both hands, too, an important skill to keep defenders offbalance. Despite being skinny, he absorbs contact well by slowing down and maintaining his balance

The rest of his offensive game is solid. He’s a sharp mover and cutter off the ball; Colorado deployed a few sets to get him clean looks at the rim. His vision is excellent across the court, which makes sense considering he grew up as a point guard. He throws early skip passes to find teammates beyond the 3-point line, hits early reads in transition lanes for layups and does a good job of keeping his eyes up when operating in half-court ball screens. He used his height to see and throw touch passes over the top of college players. When not creating directly for others, he moves the ball along quickly and makes the right reversals. There isn’t much fluff in Williams’ game.

. He has great body control and balance, especially when defending wings. If he manages to stay in front of his man, he can block jumpers. He showed he can switch onto guards like Colorado State’s Isaiah Stevens. He’s sometimes beat by those types of players but is long enough to recover and deter opponents from shooting.

Williams is not overly explosive, relying more on his length, long strides and deceleration to cover ground. He’s not a particularly high leaper and remains quite skinny. Given the way Jalen’s frame has developed, there’s immense upside in Cody also using his body to carve out space. But he can’t do it right now, which holds his game back in a few different ways.

He's not all that shifty with the ball in his hands yet and lacks a bag of crossovers or a tight handle. His angles on drives can be somewhat wide, and he can get too loose with the ball on his drives. He averaged 2.4 turnovers per game when healthy this season. To me, his lack of shiftiness is his biggest long-term concern. He must tighten his handle and continue to add more craft to reach his ceiling.

He’s an excellent driver with potential to be the type of dangerous dribble/pass/shoot wing teams desperately want to acquire. However, it’s also easy to view him as a significant project if his jumper isn’t as far along as his college percentages indicate. It’s going to take time for him to grow into his frame and add more strength. How long will that take? Can he continue to develop as a shooter to the point he becomes a genuine pull-up threat? If those two questions end with positive answers, he will be one of the best players in this class. If not, he becomes a riskier late-lottery pick.
