Upsides

• Elite athlete

• Great lob finisher

• Passing is solid for a big man

• Solid shooter, will be decently efficient on a low volume in the NBA

• Switchable defender

• Solid rim protector

Downsides

• A bit undersized, he could struggled in 1 on 1 matchups with bigger players

• I would like to see him be more aggressive as a rebounder

Conclusion

will add scouting report soon

Shades of: Naz Reid, Jarred Vanderbilt++, Robert Williams

I love the offense and rim protection from Holmes, but there are some questions that come up for me. I don’t have an example of a guy like him succeeding in the nba. Maybe a less long naz Reid? I don’t think he can be the only big on a team. He will have to play next to another big to be good, and I’m not sure if the team drafting him will have multiple true centers available. Him succeeding is dependent on where he gets drafted

Can score the ball at will. Can stretch the floor and score with face ups or backing people down. His skinny frame makes him a poor defender. I value that a lot in a center so I can’t justify having him too high.

(PF/C - HT: 6’9” - WING: 7’0” - WT: 220 - A: 21)

- Smallish stretch 5 who is a smart offensive player
- Can shoot well from 3 on low volume
- Decent handle, mid post game
- Good screener and passer, but nothing special
- Poor rebounder. He boxes out but doesn’t go get the ball and gives up tons of OREBs. This will hold him back
- Fine defender, actually better on the perimeter than the post, but his in between size is tough. Eh defender in PnR, in between spaces

Range: 13-30, Late lottery - late first

GSW: PF

Highs: can shoot the three, pretty good at free throws for his height, can go inside with length and leg strength, can assist, hustler rebounder, not a bad defender

Lows: needs to get stronger to become an elite defender to bigger guys in the NBA, also to make sure to know where to have to ball to not get stripped easily

STRENGTHS:

  • Developed a strong pick-and-pop shot to his arsenal; even though he took 83 threes in total, adding that to his arsenal and shooting 39% last season is a strong step forward

  • For most of his college career he was regarded as a post-player, and showed to be a great post player; shot 48% on his post ups (stat provided by No Ceilings) and showed to have a good bag of post moves, from drop steps to hook shots

  • Showed decent ability to read the floor at the high post and play-make for his teammates; not an every possession playmaker but has an ability to find the open guy quickly

  • Showed a level of confidence in bringing the ball up and attacking the rim from the perimeter

  • Great at scoring at the rim; shot 67% at the rim on 226 attempts

  • Showed to be a good shot blocker and great rebounder on both ends of the floor; he is best served remaining in the paint

WEAKNESSES:

  • Was not particularly the greatest of screeners on tape; set a lot of ghost screens and slip screens and I would like to see more physical screens at the next level

  • Has limited mobility defensively, which is strange because he has very legit mobility when he is on offense, but fails to guard out on the perimeter well enough and close out to shooters quick enough; probably caps him out as a true 5 rather than a versatile power forward

  • Does not have much of a mid-range game; only shot 40% on 22 mid-range jumpers. Will probably have to be a dump-off finisher or pick-and-pop threat to get the best offensive performances from him

  • His physicality in the post on defense is not always there; seems to give his opponent optimal space to operate from the post and gets finished over the top often

Summary: DaRon Holmes II quietly improved every single season during his time at Dayton. He came in originally as a rim protecting post-up center, and over the next few seasons elevated his play into being one of the best play finishers in college and an added outside shot added to his value as a player. His foot speed, strength and his energy on defense limits his overall versatility and would probably push him to becoming a full-time center instead of a player who can play the four and five. He is best served as a full-time back-up center with his current skills, but has the potential to play the four next to a center if any of those three aspects of his defense improves.
