January: McCain’s a solid player. He’s probably lacking scoring and creation upside, but I feel confident in him being a decent 3&D guard, he’s a very good on ball defender and catch and shooter, if he can become more thent hats good but I’ll count on him being a 3&d guard

Scoreur-shooteur, remarquable par sa super efficacité au tir, McCain a le défaut de ne pas jouer comme un meneur alors qu'il en a pourtant la taille... Un peu trapu et pas très rapide, il ne parvient pas vraiment à déstabiliser les défenses via le dribble. En revanche, il a vraiment un compas dans l'oeil et peut écarter le jeu lorsqu'accompagné par un 2ème porteur de balle (tel que Proctor l'était à Duke). En fin de compte, à cause de ce manque d'explosivité, McCain souffre au double-pas, où il n'est pas suffisamment créatif pour éviter les défenseurs qu'il ne parvient pas à semer. Défaut rédhibitoire pour la NBA ? Peut-être, surtout qu'il ne compense absolument pas à la passe pour l'instant, mais le jeu en vaut la chandelle et un shooteur pareil ne laisse pas indifférent !

McCain é uma versão de bolso do Seth Curry. Apesar de não ver muito upside ofensivo, ele é um shooter confiável e gosto do seu upside defensivo. No esquema correto pode se tornar uma peça importante na NBA e garantir sua vaga como um Role Player valioso.

Nunca durma nos Guards baixinhos só por serem... baixinhos. Ainda mais quando são grandes arremessadores de 3 pontos e têm energia na defesa, mesmo que apenas off-ball.

Está tão acima no meu board porquê me agrada o fit, apesar de não ter um upside tão estelar.

I think McCain is cut from the same cloth as Reed Sheppard, but not quite to the same extent. I think McCain is much more of an off ball guard than the lead PG on a team. McCain's 3pt ability is just about unrivaled in the class. Duke did a tremendous job of running plays for McCain, especially after/during his 35pt game vs Florida State.

Defensively McCain was Duke's best perimeter defender, and as a whole he did just fine. I don't think he'll be a teams primary option as a defender, but it also wouldn't shock me if he was.

STRENGTHS:

• A very legit shooter from beyond the arc; from step-backs and sidesteps to flare screens and far behind the line 3s, he has legitimate on-ball and off-ball shooting versatility

• Even with the athletic deficiencies, he does a good job of initiating contact as a ball-handler to create space on his shots and on his drives

• His handling of pressure is very good; heavy pressure and blitzes on pick and rolls do not bother him, and I think he does a good job of throwing some very accurate passes out of pick and roll situations

• Is known for having a high work ethic and being a good teammate; also known for having an infectious energy that rallies his teammates and the fans, and all of that is important

WEAKNESSES:

• Very similar weaknesses to Bub Carrington in these ways:

  • Not much of a finisher due to his frame, often over shoots his at the rim attempts due to timidness

  • Smaller 6'2" frame is going to limit his defensive upside

  • Has fine athletic traits that do not translate enough on the defensive end, especially when he moves laterally

• Not much of an athlete at all; struggles to create space when he is creating his own shot. He will more than likely be an off-ball scorer with limited P&R ball handling reps

Summary: Jared McCain is a very fun NBA prospect who should be a legit reserve guy for years to come. His play feels reminiscent of what Bub Carrington is as a prospect, but McCain provides a lot more shooting versatility. He can dribble into his shot. He can go full sprint into a fading jumper. Flare screens, floppy actions, off of pick and rolls, and any other way to get off a jumper were aspects of McCain's game that were really good. He'll be immediately be thrown into NBA games running those actions as an off-ball shooter, and that is where he should make a great career being a role player. The lack of athleticism will hurt him on both ends, which is why it is important for him to develop better strength. Regardless of it, he should be an important connective piece to a winning team for a long time.
