Jaylen Wells Scouting Report

OFFENSE

  • Great shooter, quick release and decent range

  • Little shooting versatility, mostly a catch and shoot guy

  • Decently smooth form, Jumps pretty high on shots

  • Can attack closeouts solidly

  • Isn’t an incredible passer, not very versatile, but makes the right read most of the time. Would like him to make quicker passes/reads sometimes

  • Not a good ball handler or mover, don’t trust him much scoring with the ball in his hands outside of C&S and attacking closeouts

  • Footwork is weird overall

  • Has many counters when getting to the rim, ok finisher

  • Mostly a three point shooter on offense

  • Decent off ball mover, sometimes just stands though

  • Doesn’t have a great first step

DEFENSE

  • 6’8 good build

  • Not good footwork

  • Active off ball, communicates and is attentive

  • Shaky screen nav at times

  • 6’6.5 without shoes, 6’7 wingspan

  • Good job getting in passing lanes

  • Decent overall athleticism although doesn’t have elite explosiveness

OVERALL

  • Offensively, he’s not super versatile but displayed some flashes of finishing around the rim. Efficiency from 2s isn’t good and I don’t have much hope in him as a driver. Shooting wise, however, he is very good. 41% from 3 (5 3PA) and 81% from FT are great indicators of future shooting success combined with a sweet stroke. Can attack closeouts as well, should be a very good off ball wing

  • not much on defense, he’s a good off ball guy but nothing special on ball. I wish his footwork was better and his lateral quickness. Should be average/below average in the nba

  • i could see him earning a rotation spot early for his shooting ability and ancillary wing skills, but he doesn’t do much more than that. He earns an early second round ranking for me here, but much higher than that would be a reach. He could stick in the nba for a while just using his off ball and shooting skills and we could look back on him as a top 20 guy in a redraft as a good starter for a team but the ceiling without shot creation just isn’t there. I like a lot of what I see as an off ball wing though.

Damn good shooter. Some have him as a first round pick. I don't think he does anything but shoot tho.

STRENGTHS:

  • An extremely versatile and efficient three-point scorer who played well as a catch and shoot player, off of dribble hand-offs, and pull-up jumpers; has a really quick release. Shot 42% on five attempts a game

  • He is very confident in his pull-up jumper because he does a good job of handling the ball and keeping it secure; a low turnover player at only 0.7 turnovers a night last season

  • His tight handle and pull-up ability in both the mid-range and from three gives me confidence he can grow into a potential shot creator in an offense

  • He has solid physical traits (6'7", 205 pounds) that he uses to be an irritant defensively; fought through screens well and crashed the boards well (9% true rebounding percent last season)

WEAKNESSES:

  • Not a willing, confident or good finisher around the rim; would rather take pull-up jumpers instead of getting to the rim

  • Even though he does not turn the ball over often, he was often not set up with a playmaking role. Does not mean he was not willing to pass but I'd like to see more of a playmaking jump

  • Fell victim of being a ball-watcher and a disengaged off ball defender who gets backdoored often. For as solid of an on-ball guy he is, the effort should be better especially since he did not have and will not have an advanced offensive role

  • I'd also like to see better effort when he is closing out on defenders

Player Comparison: Shades of Duncan Robinson and Corey Kispert

Great shooter, what else? Not a movement shooter at this point but he's 6'7" and younger than a lot of other guys at this stage of the draft. Defense seems to be a major concern, so I'm relatively low
