RANK

Minott isn't the flashiest player, but he has shown flashes. He is a top shelf athlete and has the build of a modern NBA wing. He does most things really well. The only problem is that he can't shoot. He made just two threes this past season. This will bring his value down significantly. When focused, he is a really good defender. He isn't always focused though, and has some rough patches here and there. For the most part he is a really well round player. If he gets in with the right team, they could work miracles with his shot.

Height 6'8

Weight 205 lbs

Wingspan 6'11

DOB 1/25/02 (Draft Age: 20)

Pre-Draft Team Memphis Tigers

Offense

  • Major transition athlete. Big bounce.

  • Tremendous cutter, lob threat, roll threat, dunker spot guy.

  • Big motor plays for tons of grab it and go boards as well as tons of offensive boards for second chance points.

  • 2/14 from 3pt is not good, but was 75% from the line (49/65). Mechanics are slow, and unconvincing. Will have to retool his shot, needs more bounce and rhythm.

  • Ball security and confidence as an offensive player is a work in progress.

  • Not an aware or tight handled wing.

  • A lot of work to do in order to be a slasher in any capacity.

Defense

  • Tons of trailing blocks.

  • Tremendous athleticism gives him oozing defensive upside.

  • Phenomenal recovery skills. Excellent foot speed.

  • Big time defensive upside on ball. When he's in his defensive stance he looks lock down. Stance is low and the feet are quick and reactive.

  • Potential to guard 1 through 5.

  • Plus-plus hands for steals and passing lanes. Impressive coordination.

  • Strong upside as a rebounder, great technique boxing out.

  • Reminiscent of an elite NFL safety. High points rebounds, head hunts pick sixes, come from behind recovery skills. Just a joy to watch defensively and salivating upside.

  • Technically sound in most areas of defense. Should be a positive contributor from the jump.

Swing Factors

  • Offensive Comfortability - Not to say that Minott doesn't offer some major positives offensively, specifically in transition, crashing the glass and in the dunker spot, but he has to prove he is not a point of attack in the flow of an offense by assuring teams he can make simple reads, handle functionally and finish with some regularity. Otherwise Minot is much more of a one-way player.

  • Perimeter Shooting - Being able to be even a league average C&S guy would go a long way in not making Minott feel like an offensive outcast.

Role

  • An athletic transition highlight reel and defensive stopper who can guard anyone he's asked.

  • LOW: Minott really struggles offensively to do some of the more basic things rendering him a one way player. He still finds value as a defensive stopper in a rotation, but his offense can be frustrating to his organization.

  • HIGH: Minott quiets all qualms of his offensive game by working hard to improve his jumper, handle, awareness and offensive IQ. He begins to knockdown C&S opportunities, but primarily he crashes the boards, puts on shows in transition and as a dunker. Defensively Minott is an absolute stand out from the class guarding 1-5 and wearing a variety of hats whether clamping down on ball in space or beating a layup off the glass on chase downs. His team loves the energy, motor and in the right situational fit he's a teams starting big.

Minott is pretty much the same as Kendall Brown. More of a pure athlete than a basketball player. Very similar size, very similar skillset. Also a good high effort defender, I like some of his defensive feel more. A bit better at forcing turnovers. Loves to run in transition. Also a play finisher, handle isn't there, shot is quite poor. Willing passer in limited opportunities. Needs a lot of development too. But doesn't make sense to me to have him separate from Kendall Brown and vice versa.

Best fits: Memphis, San Antonio, Toronto, Miami

Player analysis

Josh Minott had a rough freshman season where he got some praise from scouts despite taking a backseat to other talented freshmen like Jalen Duren and Emoni Bates. Josh is a great athlete who was a solid slasher, playing next to a better point guard than Bates would help him get more opportunities. He has a really rough jumpshot that is the swing skill that will tell if he can really produce in the league. I think with really good shooting coaches he can develop that gaping weakness in his game but if I were to say yes or no to him reaching that potential I would lean no. His best contribution to a team now is his high level defensive versatility, on the perimeter and interior he is competent which when mixed with his athleticism leaves him as an above average defender. He has nice length and instincts which helps him keep his man in front of him and he reads when to contest or defer when someone drives in on him. He will be very coachable because of his IQ and defensive knowledge. Many reports say he is one of the hardest workers in this year's class so I can see the coaching staff around the league really enjoying his presence in interviews which could lead to front offices preferring him in the early second round. If a good developmental team feels like it’s worth it to take a chance on him then by all means they should jump after it but it would be a real shame if a team with poor draft history were to take him instead because it would likely result in a bad trajectory for his career.

fun athlete and great defender. should be a very versatile defender, able to guard multiple positions while being excellent with help defense/rim protection. i love how aggressive he is on the boards and how he immediately looks to push the pace off a board. winning stuff. however, even with all the good stuff, he's basically a 0 on offense outside of transition. shockingly limited burst, terrible shooter, bad handle. unfortunate, but i don't see him being anymore than a 4/small ball 5 that's a situational bench player.

He had a really good work out at the combine Played well in the games shot the three very well at combine

Memphis's Josh Minott official measurements from the NBA Combine: 6'8.75 in shoes, 6'11.75 wingspan, 8'11.5 standing reach, 197.2 lbs with 4.7% body fat

I think this guy is so fluid fast and powerful and plays so hard you have to take a shot on him. His defense is so good and very few players move like him.

Strengths:

  • A super high upside

  • Has some pretty nice verticality

  • Has a ton of upside as a perimeter defender, super long and lanky and moves his feet well

  • Reads passing lanes well and also has a knack to pick pockets

  • Has nice timing on blocks

  • Pull up mid range shows potential

Flaws:

  • Cannot shoot a 3

  • Barely played at Memphis which raises some questions

  • Averaged 4.3 fouls per 36 minutes, that's A LOT

  • Looks very raw and will most definitely need G league time

  • Turns it over a bit too much for his role

  • Has a desirable physique with good potential

  • Great dunker, works in transition, as a cutter, or as a lob threat

  • Has the speed and motor to guard most positions and is a good rebounder

  • Low sample size, only played 14.6 MPG and averaged 6.6 PPG

  • Doesn't appear to be a shooter at all
