Most people like Champagnie because of his shooting, but I think that his main calling card will be defense. He can defend multiple positions, and has a ton of versatility. He is the epitome of positionless basketball. He’s a guard who can defend centers. While he isn’t the quickest player, he is an above average athlete. He puts his athleticism to work on defense. He is averaging almost two steals per game. He is smart when defending the ball and knows when to use a close out. He contests every shot and pass. He is able to help his teammates on tough defensive assignments and doesn’t shy away from contact. Julian is a great positional rebounder for what that’s worth. Despite what I said before, he still has a lot of shooting potential. He can shoot on the move, as well as from a spot up. His self creation as of now isn’t very impressive. He also tends to be very streaky. He needs to become a better creator, and get more consistent. If he can do so, he will be a solid rotational player. I’m not totally sold on his offensive capabilities for now though.

Pre-Draft Team St. John's Red Storm

Offense

  • A bucket getter with a knack for scoring a variety of ways- spot up, transition, cutting, iso, roll man.

  • High volume 3pt shooter. 35% for career, 82% FT.

  • Comfortable shooting off-dribble, actually better this way.

  • Shoots with little to no space, not the most efficient shots, but tough shot taker and maker.

  • Decent offensive rebounder because of his activity and variety of movements.

  • Not vertical, or laterally quick as shown in the 2021 NBA combine.

Defense

  • Above average rebounder for size.

  • Should be a competent post defender.

  • Laterally will have trouble in PNR and on the perimeter, best suited for guarding bigger slower moving forwards.

  • Will be a point of attack for most NBA offenses.

  • Hasn't been able to close out well on shooters.

Swing Factors

  • Defensively he proves to be better than thought on the perimeter.

  • His craftiness and scoring prowess transition flawlessly.

Role

  • A crafty small ball 4 who is primarily used in spurts to get some buckets, shoot on the perimeter.

  • LOW: NBA athleticism proves to be too much for Julian and he takes his skills overseas where he showcases his offensive versatility as a bucket getting forward.

  • HIGH: Champagnie's ability to take and make difficult shots along with crafty versatile scoring, and decent rebounding totals gets him in the rotation. Defensively he is concealed well enough by guarding less athletic forwards primarily inside fifteen feet.

Player analysis

Champagnie is a really tall off ball shooter who plays his role perfectly. He was a dynamic creator at Saint Joe’s but in the league it’s clear that teams will want him to be one thing which is a catch & shoot guy. Julian has defensive tools and is solid on that end because he stands at 6’8, hopefully his size will translate in the league and bring out more inner tenacity but that honestly doesn’t really matter. He is clearly tall for a wing and he has good measurables and is a decent athlete but he won’t really be anywhere near the rim in the league. What’s interesting about his off court stuff is the differences in playstyle between him and his twin brother Justin. If you merged them together they would be an extremely versatile role player because of Julian’s shot and Justin’s grind. I think Julian’s size will make him a good rebounder but like I said before he just won’t really be near the rim so that isn’t something many scouts will take into account. If he can get the hard nosed abilities of his brother he would be the perfect complementary player but even without that I really like him as an off ball shooter.

Champagine averaged 19ppg and 7reb at St.Johns. Champigne is an all around scorer. He can score inside and out. Has a good 3 point shot. Really good scorer off the dribble. He basically can score any way he needs to. His defense impact 35blk and 61stls at stjohns. Can quard 3 and 4s. Hes a solid on ball defender. contest jumper well. He has major catch and shoot upside. He needs to work on his passing which could be improved. Lacks finishing and takes floaters that dont usally go in because of it. Strugles 1on1 at times to get shot.
