Maxwell Lewis: 6’7.25” 205 lbs 7’0” wingspan 20.9 years old Sophomore, Pepperdine 17.1 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 2.8 apg, 46.8% fg%, 34.8% 3%, 78.7% ft%

Overview: Maxwell Lewis emerged from relative anonymity with an explosive start to the season to being considered by some as a lottery caliber pick. Lewis cooled off a bit to end the season but still is held in high regard due to his size and comfort with the ball in his hands, creating for himself and others. Lewis got off to a tremendous start using silky smooth dribble moves and body control to get where he wants on the basketball court but struggled against better competition. Lewis impressed at his pro day in Chicago at the NBA combine, being called a potential star by one evaluator moments after the workout.

Strengths: Great positional size Creates shots for himself and others Scores with guile. Not overly reliant on athleticism. 43% on catch and shoots. Versatile scorer, uses size or finesse. Good finisher. Has lots of experience using ball screens. Good handle.

Weaknesses: Shot selection Negative assist to turnover ratio Poor play to end the year in WCC. Not the best touch for floaters Defensively gets lost Gambles on defense. Sometimes does not wow me athletically in an athletically inferior conference. Though his guile is a strength, he may use it too often.

I’m tired of the word 3 and D, every player can play defense and shoot 3s doesn’t mean they are good at it.

Tier: Mid-Late First-Round Pick

Player Comparisons: Trey Murphy

Maxwell Lewis is a 3 and D wing. He’s got solid size on the wing, good length and is a decent enough athlete for the league. He’s a good floor spacer and elite 3 Point shooter. He’s a crafty finisher and is good with both hands. He’s a really good shot blocker for a wing and he is fast enough to match up with NBA players.

Bio: Pepperdine, July 7, 2002 (20), 6’6.25”, 207.2, Wing

Stats:

Strengths:

  • Finesse

  • Solid defender

  • Scoring IQ

  • Good shooting mechanics

Weaknesses:

  • Played for a bad mid major

  • Sometimes turnover prone

  • Didn’t exactly shoot the cover off the ball

Rundown:

For a team looking for a long term or maybe short term 3 & D option, look no further. Max Lewis brings a blend of a knack for scoring, along with good athleticism, and solid defensive instincts. The biggest argument people bring up against him is the fact that his mid major team last season only won 9 games. While this is something to note, he does still possess the traits of a future NBA role player. His shooting could almost be considered a strength, but he still needs to bring of the numbers a bit.

Maxwell Lewis is such a creative scorer. He’s the kind of wing that every team is looking for. He has defensive tools and a great feel for the game offensively. He has a deep bag worth of moves that allow him to work around any issue. He’s very crafty and contorts his body well when trying to get a basket. He’s very nimble but also menacing when getting to the rim. In drives and cuts, he’s able to hold a certain gravity due to his athleticism and style of handling the ball when getting downhill. He gets a lot of hang time but I wouldn’t say he's insanely bouncy. He’s an effective transition option and can get up when he needs to. He isn’t super bursty but makes calculated strides and is efficient with his movement. He has great body control and knows how to shift himself and the ball to his liking. When he finishes close to the basket he really swings the ball. He has good timing and will loop the ball around himself and others to get a bucket. He gives himself space really well by daring defenders into covering the lane off of fakes. He likes to tease with his dribble but always makes sure to keep it relatively tight. He also likes to do a lot of stepbacks. He is a capable enough shooter in order to get away with going back a few feet. He isn’t super dynamic as a shooter off of the dribble but he does have good form and can hit it well in spot-up opportunities. His splits from outside aren’t too amazing but he has a quick release and looks confident when shooting. His free throw percentage was pretty good, which is usually a reliable indicator of shooting progression. He was used mainly as an on-ball option at Pepperdine due to a lack of talent around him. When looking at how he was utilized you have to think about how he would fare if less pressure was put on him. He put up productive numbers but he probably could be more efficient if he wasn’t targeted by defenses as often or wasn’t forced to take as much of the workload offensively. It’s clear he would sometimes be forced into tough shots because he didn't have many other options. He seems like a smart player to me and I would like to see him in a different type of role. Maxwell is also a good passer. Because he had the ball in his hands a lot as the primary scorer, he had the opportunity to show off his playmaking. He has a natural feel for scoring and doesn’t cause many turnovers. He likes to dish the ball around in a set system and could look even better if put in a new situation. Most of his skillset seems to work a lot better when he’s an offensive option rather than a generator on paper. His future use as a shooter and cutter on offense could do wonders for his game. He could see a real jump in terms of scoring fluidity and putting his abilities together if placed on a playoff team. Defensively he can sometimes be a little lost. Lewis has all of the tools needed to be a good defensive player but has trouble with endurance. He puts a lot of effort into defense but will get tired fairly quickly. He loses track of off-ball movement and it’s clear that he loses momentum when he goes to the other side of the floor. I think that the difficulties he has on the offensive end carry over to his defense due to straining. He puts most of his energy into offense which really bleeds into his defense. My other issue with him on that side of the ball is his burst. He sometimes isn’t twitchy enough to cover the small and faster players. His length helps to disrupt players of any size but I wouldn’t say he can guard up and down the court completely. He has the measurables and signs of being a good versatile piece on the defensive end but he hasn’t been able to put it together due to team construct. I really like Maxwell Lewis as an immediate contributor but I also think he has a lot of upside. Not many guys have the kind of natural feel when scoring that he has and he actually garnered some comparisons to a young Paul George because of it. I think that some may be undervaluing him due to him playing some weaker competition. If he is plugged into the right place he could see some real improvement with his flaws such as his offensive consistency and defensive tenacity. Winning teams are filled with long wings that can shoot like him so I wouldn’t be too shocked if there’s a trade-up to draft him from a more stable organization. His traits and tools suggest that he is the modern-day player that teams love due to his versatility on both ends of the floor with the potential to be even more.

OFFENSE ONLY QUESTION IS THE COMPETITION He has as ideal NBA size at 6’7” with a 6’10” wingspan. Lewis is a marvelous athlete, a seamless mover laterally with potent end-to-end speed and explosive leaping ability HAS GOOD FIRST STEP Lewis is now shooting 71.1 percent inside the arc, 50.0 percent from three and 80.0 percent from the line while showing scouts his takeover scoring ability with self-creation and shotmaking versatility. very fluid one motion shot can get to stepback too with balance footwork to maybe make it happen off movement CAN GER BUCKETS IN A VARIETY OF WAY, 3S , ATTACKING CLOSEOUTS, VERY EFFICIENT FROM THE POST, PULLING UP FROM MIDRANGE AND 3S it has been within flow of the offense great in transition Lewis has grown so much as a playmaker from last year, he’s a true grab-and-go threat at this point He is consistently leveraging his gravity as a scorer, recognizing help and then punishing the defender by rewarding his teammates with easy, open looks. If the defense collapses from the perimeter on a drive, he’ll find a shooter spotting up for three. improved a lot this year can now make basic reads CAN STILL CUT DOWN TURNOVER AND HE SHOULD CAN GET TO LINE WITH MORE REGULARITY , WOULD LOVE TO SEE HIM GO TO THE RIM MORE OTD

DEFENSE Great at getting skinny to defend screens and at recovering to alter or even block the shot good at moving his feet on the perimeter Lewis is nasty on the ball. He’s long and he slides well. He stays big while on the move. His mobility and hip flexibility allow him to slink around screens. On the rare occasions that he does get beat, Lewis doesn’t quit on the play. He works to recover and has such imposing physical tools that he’s never out of the play especially good on ball use good lateral quickness and lenght to bother off ball gambled way less but still good instinct good effort level most times SOME FOUL TROUBLE STILL AT TIMES COMPETITION NOT GREAT ATM?

He may not be able to make the biggest impact immediately but his potential both offensively and defensively will raise his draft stock a lot. He’s got a lot of potential and he could be a very good NBA player. He has tried to do too much at times and this leads to a lot of turnovers so he will need to cut this out during his NBA career.

Maxwell lewis- Pepperdine (SG/SF) Age: 20.9yrs 6”7 195 (Malik Beasley)

Maxwell Lewis is a long athletic wing who is crafty and smooth with the ball in his hands and has a knack for scoring. A confident shooter from three and is able to create space with his long strides or with step backs behind the three point line. You would think a player with his length and athleticism would be a good defender but Lewis is not. He often puts up minimal effort and is often out of position on the defensive end.

Lanky wing scorer with excellent footwork on dribble counters or post-ups. Not the quickest first step, but sets up defenders with rip-throughs or hang dribbles and has enough shake to get to the rim. Also not the best finisher due to lack of elite athleticism, but has enough burst and touch at the rim to make some tough shots. Cooled down by the end of the season, but has a really good-looking shooting stroke from downtown. Can hit catch and shoots, dribble pull-ups, or step-backs. Decent passer but can improve his overall offensive IQ. Defensively, is long enough to bother shooters. Needs to lock in defensively more often. Often loses his man off the ball. When locked in, he can be an average defender with upside due to physical tools. He was benched in close games in the middle of the season. There are questions about whether he is a winning type of player, but the upside is there for him to become at least a scoring wing at the next level, with upside as a #1 or #2 scoring option.
