Big Board Rankings

Strengths

  • "Explosive leaper with solid size. Big hands. Runs the floor hard. One of the most efficient transition finishers in college basketball. Lob threat out of pick-and-roll and from the dunker spot."

  • "Glides through the air for ferocious dunks; he’s a major threat in the pick-and-roll

  • cutting

  • and running the break. He also possesses a soft touch with either hand around the rim."

  • "Nimble ball handler who can attack from the perimeter; he’ll be a weapon in fake dribble handoffs since he can facilitate

  • shoot

  • or get to the basket."

  • "Good shooter from NBA 3-point range

  • but he hasn’t fallen in love with his shot like many modern bigs."

  • "Strong playmaker. He makes quick decisions out of the short roll and could develop into a playmaking hub from the post."

  • "Has the leaping ability and quickness to theoretically be an effective shot blocker."

  • "Dynamic athlete with incredible leaping ability; can impact the game playing above the rim (led college basketball in dunks last season)"

  • "Efficient shooter from inside the perimeter and effective from outside

  • too. He shot 41.7% from 3 during his time at Dayton."

  • "Underrated passer and playmaker from his position who is quickly able to read defenses and make accurate passes when necessary"

Areas to Improve

  • "Lacks a degree of versatility and upside on the defensive end. Upright mover with choppy strides. Struggles to sit down and slide with perimeter forwards. Doesn''t change direction all that well. Discipline comes and goes as a pick-and-roll defender. Has issues with more physical bigs given his light base. Buried in the post regularly. Not always the most engaged rebounder. Can he play any small-ball 5 in the NBA?"

  • "Brutal pick-and-roll defender who displays little recognition or feel for reading a screen; he’s almost always out of position."

  • "High center of gravity limits his defensive ability in the post. He’ll often get pushed around for low-post positioning—Zion would bury him under the rim."

  • "Doesn’t change directions well laterally; he has tight hips

  • which means NBA offenses will attack him relentlessly one-on-one."

  • "Poor help defender and rebounder who doesn’t play with great awareness or effort."

  • "Lacks an arsenal of low-post scoring moves and is raw shooting off the dribble."

  • "Limited mobility moving laterally will hinder his ability to defend on the perimeter and switch onto more mobile wings and forwards"

  • "Explosive leaper

  • but physically he will have challenges matching up against bigger forwards in the post in the NBA"

  • "Average rebounder

  • especially for a player his size and at his position"

NBA COMPARISON - Kenyon Martin. Shawn Marion.

Obi Toppin was considered the best player in college basketball last year because his offense was so dominant. He also has the ability to stretch the floor. If he can dramatically improve his defense, he should be a star in the league.

Obi Toppin averaged 20 points a game. He should be a top 3 prospect. If there is a lane open than he''s Dunking the Ball. Obi Toppin NBA Comparisons: Prime and young Blake Griffin and John Collins.

Ready now. Immediate contributor on offense due to INCREDIBLE leaping ability. Oops for days. Capable shooter, early on needs to prove he is a knock down catch and shoot. Where is he creating his own shot? Can he operate out of the high post with face-up baskets? Lacks lateral quickness, PNR defense poor until further notice. Rigid in his hips, they stay tight. Is he a half court offensive threat? May be a strong benefactor of playmakers around him. Fits: Run N Gun, get it and go offense.

Player Comp: Shawn Kemp

Strengths: Toppin is a late blooming frontcourt prospect who seemingly come out of nowhere after a redshirt season in 2017-2018 to emerge as the best player and prospect in the A-10 conference in 2019-2020 and one of the top players and prospects in the nation … Has decent size for a PF prospect at 6’9, a 7-2 wingspan and around 230 lbs …Shows very good run-jump athleticism … An above the rim highlight machine, Toppin is a consistent finisher at the rim and looks to finish with authority much more often than not, even through contact … Lead the NCAA in dunks this season, and many of them were of the put back variety due to a quick 2nd jump and high energy … His experience playing the 5 for Dayton gives him positional versatility, as he has the ability to operate on the low post, mid range and even step out to the 3 point line and be effective, making him fit seamlessly as a 6’9 four man in the current NBA … His shooting fundamentals are a plus, as he shoots wit

Toppin hasn''t the same upside as other players of this draft maybe, but he can fit with all team, thanks to his different ways to score. He can be useful in many ways and his problem on defense can be resolved in a good system and more experience

I cant believe Toppin falls all the way down to no.10 but it might actually benefit him going to PHO. He can fit right in their starting 5 pushing Saric to the bench improving their second unit. Having 2 very good creators in Booker and Rubio, he will be able to get the ball in spots to score directly. He might be the move to finally push PHO to the playoffs.

TRADE: BLAZERS MOVE 16, 46, 2021 TOP 8 PROTECTED, ANFERNEE SIMONS, AND MARIO HEZONJA FOR 4.

This is a great move for Portland because they get premier young talent, which they haven''t had since Lillard. Toppin is a great player that fits in with the Blazers perfectly because he can do the pick + roll, he can sit in the corner, he can cut, whatever they need him to do. Plus they can move Melo to the 3.

While some projections have him going 4-6, skill wise hes the second best player and its obvious why. Hes an wlite transition player and could be a great pick and roller next to a point guard. Hes explosive near the rim and could even space the floor, as he has a career .417 three point percentage off of nearly 2 attempts. Compared to other prospects, hes the second ready rookie out there and i beilive he would be a strong ROTY cannidate. He also has small ball potential as he has both the hieght and size to be a strech five. His accurate comoarrioson is aaron gordon. But, he is also a defensive liability and with him being 22, he could be a low ceiling, high floor type of guy.
