Upsides

• One of the most well rounded athletes in this draft class, he is fast, strong, and has jump out of the gym hops

• Has an ideal frame for a wing in the NBA, 6’8 with long arms and a lot of muscle

• Elite scorer in transition, he gets down the court faster than anyone else and is good at finishing plays at high speeds

• Solid mover off the ball, he is a good cutter and can fly around screens

• Great driver, it is really hard for a defender to stop him when he bursts towards the rim

• Good finisher around the rim, he is so athletic and can finish through contact

• Good perimeter defender, he stays in front of his man and can contain anyone from bigger guards to forwards

Downsides

• Shot creation is very inconsistent right now

• 3-point shot isn’t good right now

• Very turnover prone, he doesn’t have very good control of the ball when it’s in his hands

• Not a good passer right now, his passes can be off target and that leads to more turnovers than buckets

Conclusion

will add scouting report soon

Shades of: Jaylen Brown, RJ Barrett, Benedict Mathurin

Holland has a lot to like about his game. He’s an elite athlete, he accelerates really quickly and he’s strong, he’s a great driver and transition ball handler, and as a big forward, that’s a great skill set. Holland also has incredible hands and he’s a very good defensive player. But his shooting stats are terrible and his passing isn’t good. There’s two scenarios I see with ron. The first one is he’s exactly what we want him to be, a primary or secondary option who’s an elite slasher and creator and defender. If this happens, I’ll regret where I’m ranking him now. The other scenario is where he really struggles in the nba, his lack of shooting is exploited and it makes him not a very effective offensive player. In this scenario he’s too high, and neither scenario is more likely than the other. He has a lot to like about him but we’ve seen guys like him struggle in the nba before.

Scouting Report: Ron holland is an elite on ball defender. He has the best hands of anyone I’ve ever scouted. He moves his hips well and is quick laterally. He could bulk up a bit but is pretty versatile. Off the ball on defense he could improve but nothing to worry about. On offense he is elite in transition as he is very strong finish through contacts and drawing fouls. He’s very athletic strong leaper and he’s fast and quick. He is for sure a reactive passer but he usually finds the right man. He’s a good finisher but could work on using his left and his touch is solid but nothing that would set him apart. His 3pt shooting is not great, very low percentages, the mechanics aren’t terrible but I wouldn’t project him to be a good shooter. He has a tight handle and is good at using hesitations.

  1. Ron Holland - Ignite (SG/SF - HT: 6’8” - WING: 6’11” - WT: 200 - A: 18y)

    • Athletic wing who doesn’t quite have the strength to play the 4 but has great wing size and strength at the 2 and 3. If he puts on weight he could easily be a great power wing.

    • GREAT force driving to the rim but doesn’t have much shake or creativity

    • Great perimeter defense, can guard 1-4

    • Developing outside shot, not a good 3pt shooter yet

    • Turnover prone, bad AST:TO ratio

    • Shades of Peyton Watson, RJ Barrett, Jae’Sean Tate, bigger Terrence Mann without the shot

    • Best fit: Portland, Memphis, Utah

    • Worst fit: Detroit, Toronto, Washington, Brooklyn Range: 1 - 5

Pros:

  • Great finisher at the rim! Can play through contact, gets tough takes, and is comfortable driving to the paint.

  • Decent ball handler... not flashy or excessive but can get to his spots to either 1. score or 2. create for his teammates.

  • Also a decent rebounder, at least defensively. Averaging 6.6 rebounds per game (5.1 being defensive). He passes the eye test as well, showing in a sizable number of clips that when he wants to, he can rebound the ball well and come up with it over someone else.

  • Good height for a Small Forward; 6'8.

  • Very young, will only be 18 on draft night. I feel like this is one of the more appealing parts of Holland's draft report, because it gives a franchise plenty of time to mold him as they want and develop him to his full potential. Which transitions me well to the Cons section...

+

Cons:

  • To buy into Holland is to buy into what he could potentially be. Holland shows flashes of being great at a lot of things! He could be a great passer, he could be a decent shooter, a decent defender, he could be a really good overall player if he reaches his potential. Holland has good court vision and can create for his teammates; he's averaging 3.2 assists per game! But, he's also averaging 3 turnovers per game. For every dime he throws, he throws an awful pass right after. He can hit every three, whether it's wide or contested one game, then go ice cold and miss every shot the next game. He could give a lot of effort on the defensive end, poking the ball and getting deflections, then the next game, he could just stop trying and give up on possessions defensively because he got blown by, or he fell for a cross-over, or hezi or... whatever. You might be saying, "why is this a con lil bro if he could develop into all of this why is this a bad thing". To that I say, you have a point. IF he develops into all of that, he's going to be successful in the league. But, what if he doesn't? It's important to keep in mind that there's a chance he doesn't become any of the good things I listed. It's up for you to decide whether you like Holland or not purely from potential... if you do that's fine! If you don't, that's also fine! I think people should also take into account what Holland could be by also acknowledging how successful the G League Ignite has been. It's being shut down soon, so that kind of puts things into more perspective on how Ignite prospects are shining out to be. tl;dr: A lot of Holland's appealingness is glimpses of potential he shows in multiple aspects, but it's important to keep in mind that he has the chance of never developing into the player he could be.

  • Ok no more long rants. The next few bullet points will be on issues I mentioned shortly in the paragraph above. --[]--

  • I'm not sold on Holland's defensive ability. On film, he never really stood out, and at times he would just not try. There are so many moments where he just sees his opponent set up for a shot, not close out or defend, and just watch the ball go into the hoop. He wouldn't apply pressure, he would be slow to react, etc. Although he's averaging 2.5 steals per game, it's hard to see that on film. And also, you should keep in mind that's he's averaging 3.3 fouls per game, wayyy too much. That's more fouls than steals...

  • Holland is averaging 3.2 assists per game! Looks great on paper, but when you realize he's also averaging 3 turnovers per game and has a 1.07 assist/turnover ratio (bad if you didn't know), you kind of get put off from his passing ability (at least I do). Like I mentioned before, he could be a great playmaker, but he's not that now.

  • This is one of the more intriguing parts of Holland's game, his shooting. He's really streaky, he's either hitting every three or bricking every three, doesn't seem to be an in-between. Currently he's an abysmal 24% from three, but, he's 75% from the line! Although I don't like Holland's three-point, I do like his mid-range. He has a really nice pull-up middy which always seemed to go in. Holland could develop into a decent shooter, but again, just potential. --[]--

  • Don't like that he doesn't do much when the ball isn't in his hands. Doesn't cut very often, doesn't really find better looks for himself, just kind of sits there and waits to see what his teammates do.

  • Mediocre FG percentage; 44%.

  • Would like if he put on some more weight, only 206 lbs.

+

I yapped enough about Holland; I don't have much else to say. I see the hype around him, but I also see more bad in him than I think others do. If Holland doesn't get drafted by the right team, I think he could be a bust honestly. That's just me though, you decide for yourself.

ALSO, the film on Holland I watched seems a little suspicious to be honest, so I could be way off on how he plays... blame that on who I'm watching film from, not me!

Prospect rating: High-Mid C.

RANK

Overview: Ron Holland is a 6'6", 204-pound wing/forward from the G League Ignite who's currently the projected no. 5 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. He's a versatile and high-energy player known for his elite defensive prowess, improving offensive game, and leadership skills. Strengths:

  • Defensive lockdown: Holland projects as an immediate defensive impact player. His long wingspan, quick feet, and high basketball IQ enable him to guard all five positions on the court. He can switch onto guards on the perimeter, contest shots effectively, and disrupt passing lanes. His defensive instincts and tenacity make him a nightmare for opposing offenses.

  • Emerging offensive versatility: While defense is his calling card, Holland's offensive game is steadily evolving. He shows a well-rounded skillset, attacking the rim with athleticism, finishing through contact, and knocking down mid-range jumpers consistently. He's also developing a three-point shot, which could make him a true two-way threat.

  • High motor and leadership: Holland plays with relentless energy and brings a competitive spirit to the court. He's always hustling, diving for loose balls, and motivating his teammates. His leadership qualities shine through, making him a vocal presence on the floor and a potential locker room leader.

  • Athleticism and size: Holland has the frame and physical tools to succeed in the NBA. He's quick and explosive, able to elevate for rebounds and dunks. His size and strength allow him to hold his own in the post and create mismatches against smaller defenders. Weaknesses:

  • Consistency on offense: While his offensive repertoire is expanding, Holland's shot selection can be inconsistent at times. He can force tough shots or rely on his athleticism instead of utilizing his full skillset. He needs to continue refining his decision-making and offensive polish.

  • Three-point shot: As mentioned, Holland's three-pointer is still a work in progress. He can hit open shots, but his range and overall consistency need improvement. Developing a reliable three-point threat would open up even more scoring opportunities and make him a more dangerous offensive weapon.

  • Limited experience: Although he's playing in the G League, Holland still lacks experience against established NBA talent. The jump in competition and physicality could pose a challenge initially. He'll need time to adjust and adapt to the demands of the league. Overall: Ron Holland is a unique talent with the potential to be a defensive cornerstone and impactful offensive contributor in the NBA. His defensive versatility, athleticism, and leadership qualities are highly coveted, making him a prime candidate for the top pick in the 2024 Draft. While his offensive game needs continued refinement, his drive and work ethic suggest he'll work hard to become a well-rounded two-way player. The team that drafts him will be acquiring a high-character player with the potential to become a franchise cornerstone. Additional Notes:

  • Holland is known for his strong work ethic and dedication to improvement. He's constantly working on his weaknesses and adding new skills to his game.

  • Some scouts compare Holland's defensive versatility and leadership to Kawhi Leonard, while others see him as a more aggressive offensive player in the mold of Scottie Pippen.

  • He's a popular choice for the no. 1 pick, but some mock drafts project him going slightly lower depending on team needs and preferences. Overall, Ron Holland is a player to watch closely in the lead-up to the 2024 NBA Draft. He has the talent and potential to make a significant impact on the league for years to come.

Mid. Not one specific part of his game gets me excited. Poor shooter, decent at getting to the basket, poor vision. Like him on the defensive end, shot mechanics look solid, and he has very good physical traits. Shades of Kuminga.

Ron Holland is one of my favorite prospects, and one I can't wait to actually see play. He has one of the highest motors out of all the top picks and is always flying around the court. He has one of the higher defensive upsides, especially for the wings. Offensively is where there are bigger questions. His jump shot didn't really develop in the Ignite program, and while he was able to score 20 ppg but not efficiently. If his efficiency, specifically from 3 increases, he has a chance to be the best player from this class.

Ceiling: If Scottie Barnes traded his playmaking for speed Floor: If Scottie Barnes traded all his skill for speed Comparison: Jaylen Brown

Ideal Fits:

  1. Portland Trail Blazers

  2. Washington Wizards

  3. Charlotte Hornets

Ron Holland is one of the best athletic wings in the class with an elite vertical, speed, and strength. He can create shots both for himself and his teammates while also being able to drive into the paint and finish. He projects to be a dynamic iso-scorer in the league if he can continue to improve on finding space for his shots. He's a decent rebounder and always has a defensive presence. His versatility on both ends should allow him to be an elite wing in the future and if he can fix his shot, he could jump up into #1 pick conversations.
