Pre-Draft Team Vanderbilt Commodores

Offense

  • High volume 3pt shooter.

  • Gets himself to the FT line quite frequently.

  • Shifty, quick, deceptive handles. Can change speeds and angles really well. A real inventive improvisation as a guard.

  • Can score, get assists, get to the free throw line, and turn the ball over at a high volume. Picking and choosing his spots more wisely will increase the efficiency.

  • Can get up well for his stature.

  • Turns the ball over too much, but has much of his teams weight on his shoulders.

  • Working floater

Defense

  • Active hands for steals

Swing Factors

  • More of a facilitator mindset & less turnovers - Playing on a pretty poor Vanderbilt club can put too much on his shoulders scoring and playmaking, but nonetheless it would be nice to see an improved assist to turnover rate this year and more of a commitment towards a facilitating role because at the next level he will have nowhere near the same scoring duties.

  • Can he defend? At the moment his on ball defending looks alright, but he is a target in pick and roll situations. He doesn’t really effect the oppositions shooting either.

Role

  • LOW:

Player analysis

Scotty Pippen Jr. is very different from his father that played before him. He is a small guard who is incredibly shifty on both ends of the floor, he used his first step in order to take advantage of the college game. He really knows how to explode to the basket while having a really high ability to make and create his own shots. He is a real three level offensive threat whose only weakness on that end of the floor is his size, he lies somewhere between 5’10 and 6’0 which obviously isn't ideal for playing on an NBA floor. That size is a rarity in the league especially when it comes to a real impact. If he can shoot over NBA defenders he has a real shot at being a good player but that is such a make or break factor that hasn’t worked out in the past that I would lean towards no. He also isn’t a supreme athlete outside of agility and speed, his strength and vertical isn’t something to write home about and when you are already that small you want all the athleticism you can get. Pippen is a sneaky defender that reminds me a lot of Jose Alvarado last year in the way he uses trickery to disrupt his man. Defense is one aspect that he uniquely uses his size to his advantage by getting crazy steals on the perimeter, although he doesn’t use the same party trick style as Jose I think he can have just as big of an impact right away if not a bigger one of his offense really translates. I like Scotty and he managed to get better every year at Vanderbilt but his height might be what keeps him out of the league. If he was three or four inches taller he could have been a lottery level prospect but his physical weakness weigh him down a lot when it comes to draft stock.

NBA Hall of Famer Scotty Pippen's son Scotty Pippen Jr has gotten a lot more draft buzz than I anticipated. I expected him to be grouped in with the lower section of my big board but he has proved me wrong. He has become a legit prospect and has a good chance at getting drafted. He tested the waters last year at the GLeague camp and made the right decision to go back to school.
