Jury said not guilty on a rape charge. Still, character questions linger. If a team thinks he's a high character guy from their eval, they could take him in the lottery. He’s an NBA 2, straight up. Good shot creator, shooter, playmaker, defender... he can do a bit of everything at a high level. Older prospect at 23, but imo has an real pathway to being an NBA two-guard.

Shades of Kelly Oubre, Josh Richardson

RANK

Overview:

Terrence Shannon Jr. is a 6'6", 220-pound senior guard from the University of Illinois, projected as a mid-to-late first-round pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. He's known for his athleticism, scoring prowess, and leadership qualities, offering teams a blend of immediate production and developmental potential.

Strengths:

Explosive scorer: Shannon is a natural scorer, possessing a variety of ways to get buckets. He can attack the basket with power and athleticism, finish above the rim with authority, and knock down jump shots with a consistent stroke. He thrives in transition, pushing the pace and creating scoring opportunities for himself and others.

Strong leadership: Shannon demonstrates strong leadership qualities, both vocally and through his actions. He leads by example with his work ethic, competitiveness, and positive attitude, contributing to a winning culture for his team. Improved shooting: While not a pure shooter, Shannon has steadily improved his shooting from all areas of the court during his college career. His shooting efficiency has increased consistently, making him a more well-rounded offensive threat. Athleticism and physical tools: Shannon boasts impressive athleticism for his size. He is quick, explosive, and possesses a strong frame, allowing him to compete effectively above the rim and defend multiple positions on the court. Weaknesses:

Decision-making: At times, Shannon can struggle with his shot selection and decision-making, forcing shots or making unnecessary turnovers. Refining his decision-making and developing a better understanding of game situations will be crucial for his success at the next level. Defensive consistency: While his athleticism provides defensive potential, Shannon's defensive awareness and overall defensive effort can fluctuate. He needs to improve his lateral quickness, stay disciplined on defense, and consistently contribute to the team's defensive scheme. Free-throw shooting: While his overall shooting has improved, Shannon's free-throw shooting remains below average. This can be a liability at the NBA level, where teams heavily emphasize free throws. Overall:

Terrence Shannon Jr. is a talented and competitive player who can provide immediate scoring and leadership to an NBA team. His athleticism, scoring ability, and leadership qualities are valuable assets, but he needs to refine his decision-making, improve his defensive consistency, and develop his free-throw shooting to reach his full potential.

Additional Notes:

Shannon entered the draft after a successful four-year college career, including playing for Texas Tech before transferring to Illinois. Some scouts compare him to a young Donovan Mitchell due to their scoring prowess, athleticism, and leadership qualities, while others see him as a more physical scorer in the mold of Victor Oladipo. His scoring ability, leadership, and athleticism make him a valuable asset for teams seeking a scoring guard who can contribute immediately and develop into a well-rounded NBA player. Overall, Terrence Shannon Jr. is a player to watch closely in the lead-up to the 2024 NBA Draft. He has the talent and potential to make a significant impact on the league for years to come, but his development will hinge on improving his weaknesses and refining his overall game.

It is important to note that Terrence Shannon Jr. was recently arrested in December 2023 for an alleged sexual assault in September. This situation is still ongoing, and the potential impact on his draft status and career is uncertain. It is important to consider this information when evaluating him as a prospect.

STRENGTHS:

  • A great driver who can put the ball on the floor and finish at the rim; 65% at the rim by using a surprising amount of strength, as well as his ability to explode past his defender for crafty layups and jams

  • Showed competency as a shooter this year from three as well as the mid-range; showed some good stuff as a shooting creator

  • His ability to run pick and roll and finish plays on those P&Rs were enhanced by an improved handle with the opportunity he got as a number one option this year

  • Explosiveness showed up in the film on the defensive end; really excelled as a defensive rebounder and crasher and showed to be real good at closing out to shooters. If his effort can show up defensively at the next level now that he isn't the number one option, he can really make an instant impact

WEAKNESSES:

  • Did not balance the scoring with the defensive effort well this year; adjusted from being a good role player to number one option, and it was obvious that a drop off would occur

  • Does not have the largest scoring bag among prospects; can settle for some really difficult shot attempts that could have been mitigated by simply catching and shooting instead of pump faking and driving into traffic

  • Is an undersized wing at 6'6" as well as his skinnier frame; should be easy to bulk up a little bit but for now is too slim for a wing

  • Only a 34% three point shooter in college; made some improvements this year at a 36% clip but also needs to remain an average shooter

Best role upon entering the NBA: A quick attacker to the rim off the catch, corner spot up shooter and crasher on the glass for a contender

Player Comparison: Shades of Kelly Oubre and Jordan Clarkson

Pro Comparison: Kelly Oubre Jr.

  • On-Ball Defense

  • Off-Ball Defense

  • Scorer

++Strengths:++

  1. Thrives in transition while pushing the pace, uses bursts of speed to get by defenders

  2. Good finisher at the rim who has slick footwork and finishes with craft

  3. In the half court he's an aware cutter who needs little space to rise up and dunk over defenders

  4. A good handle lets him get into pick-and-rolls and into pull-up 3s

  5. Hit 79% of his free throws in college

  6. Defends with an explosive athleticism that allows him to make highlight plays like chase-down blocks or fly-in rebounds from the perimeter.

++Weaknesses:++

  1. He's 24 years old

  2. Is involved in a criminal investigation

  3. A bit undersized to have the type of versatility of the league's best defenders so his potential is capped

  4. Streaky shooter throughout college especially from the 3-point line

  5. Doesn't have a reliable floater
