Trevion is the epitome of a big man floor spacer. He doesn’t shoot many threes, but he is a phenomenal passer. He stands near the basket and always knows what to do with the ball. He has a feathery touch on his passes which will help him thrive. He is a throwback bruiser, but his passing gives him a route to success. He has good foot movement and he gets to the right passing spots. He is big and is an excellent low post scorer. He uses his muscle to bully his way to the hoop. He protects the ball with his life and does a pretty good job limiting turnovers. He has good quick twitch muscles and gets off his feet quickly. He is polished around the basket, with his soft touch. Not only can he score off of dunks and layups, but he’s shown potential as a midrange sniper. Early on in his career, he will be primarily an interior presence. However, if he expands his range, he’ll be a great all around player. Williams is a great rebounder, and can become a good weakside rim protector. He is already a senior, but he is very young for his class. Keep a watch on him as a sneaky sleeper.

Player analysis

Trevion Williams is one of the best passers in the draft if not the best and that’s crazy for a center, he is a basketball genius that seems to be held back by the era of basketball he plays in. At Purdue he was the ball handler in the pick & roll over the top guard prospect in the entire draft, Jaden Ivey, it may have been because of bad coaching but I think it also stands as testament for how gifted Williams is. He handles like a guard who makes really amazing and tricky passes, he looks like a bigger and slower Jason Williams when he has the ball in his hands. Trevion has a nice midrange game but it isn’t anywhere close to great and his three-ball is awful. Williams mainly prefers to score in the post but the way he does it is way too slow to work in the modern league, if he was born 20 years earlier he would easily be a lottery pick but that style of basketball has flown out the window and is now a hindrance to teams. He is also a mediocre college defender that is far too slow and stiff to work in the league, there is almost no possibility that he is anywhere close to league average in the NBA. In order for him to be playable for teams the offense will have to run for him and the only way I think teams will actually buy into him is if he is the player running the bench, he is too much of a liability on defense for teams to start him but if you don’t give him the ball he is useless.

Pros:

  • The best passer in the entire class: he operates in the post and can throw all kinds of passes to shooters and cutters with amazing accuracy

  • Great post scorer: footwork, touch and fakes are all high level

  • Flashes of self creation on the perimeter, really good handle for someone his size, can crossover opposing bigs

Cons:

  • Defense isn't there at all: too heavy footed to guard opposing guards, subpar rim protection, has to improve P&R coverage to stay on the floor

  • The shot is a complete question mark: decent percentage from 3 but on low volume, career <60% FT, form looks fine

Trevion has a unique game, truly beautiful to watch but you have to wonder how a prevalent post scorer can fit in today's NBA, especially if the defense isn't good. To make it work the shot has to come around in some way, in order to make the defense honest on the perimeter, so that he can display his best skill: passing the ball. While the overall profile doesn't really seem to describe a rotational NBA player, I'm banking on what I think is the most valuable skill in basketball. At Purdue his passes unlocked a new dimension on offense and that can translate immediately at the next level, on a Draymond-like role (without the defense).

Trevion has the passing abilty as a playmaker near the talent of Holmgren. Hes a good rebounder, good instincs defensively and has hands in passing lanes. Hes an undersized 5 so he will strugle to score in the NBA. Has poetential to grow a jumper which would make him such a better player.

If the 76ers selected Trevion Williams, I wouldn't be mad at all. That's how much I believe in this guy's high upside. If people want the next Draymond Green, look no further as Trevion plays with the same fire and passion that Draymond did, and is a flashier passer(remains to be seen if it can translate into necessarily more dynamic playmaking) but Trevion is easily the best passing big man in the draft. If you're open on the wings or cutting and he's on the block he'll find you. If he's open court uncontested, he will find you. The key to Trevion's upside will be if he can be a better offensive player than Draymond, because he has the same defensive versatility, offensive playmaking and tenacity that is a crucial plug of an NBA dynasty.
