Upsides

• He is the best passer in the draft. He is not as dynamic as Topic, but his skill is unmatched. He can effectively run an offense in any situation.

• Really good first step, it’s very difficult for defender to both predict when he is going to drive and then stay in front of him. He isn’t super explosive after that, but he makes up for it with his craftiness.

• Super crafty ball handler, he can put together some insane dribble move combos.

• Elite footwork, defenders simply can’t handle his combination of crafty ball handling and crazy good footwork

• Good scorer from all three levels. He is the best under the rim finisher, outside of Isaiah Collier, in this draft class. He can pull up from mid range and beyond the arch, and he is really efficient when he does.

• High IQ player, he rarely makes mistakes on either end of the court.

• He tries hard on defense, which does help make up for his lack of size in some ways z

Downsides

• He is a mismatch target for bigger players on defense, as it is usually the case with smaller guards

• Not really effective off the ball on offense

Conclusion

will add scouting report soon

Shades of: Jalen Brunson, Tyus Jones, TJ McConnell

Don’t overthink it! Tyler Kolek is too good to it be a good NBA player. He’s an incredible shooter, almost shooting 50/40/90 (he’s at 49/40/89) with decent volume on all of them. He can also get to the rim well, it’s very good for a guard. Kolek is also the best passer in the draft. He’s top 5 in tha nation in assists, and he has over a 2.5 assist to turnover ratio, which is insane for his usage. He’s an elite guard, one of the best in college basketball. I feel confident that kolek will be able to lead a great nba offense, regardless of his size or athleticism, he’s just too talented. His draft profile reminds me a lot of Jalen Brunson, who people dais’s game wouldn’t translate, but it clearly did. Now, I don’t expect kolek to be as good as Brunson, but they are very similar in a lot of ways, and I believe kolek will be successful for the same reason; he’s too good not to.

Comp; Mavs Brunson, Tyus Jones with a better jumper

Likes:

  • Great passer who is obviously super talented. Kolek has amazing court vision, which, when paired alongside his ball handling ability and his speed, makes him a stellar point guard who can always create for his teammates and make a successful play for some points. To put into frame how good of a passer Kolek actually is, he's averaging 2.6 assists for every turnover. He's going to be someone you can trust with the ball in their hands and deal with heavy usage.

  • Kolek can really shoot the ball. He's 38% from three!... his form is a little wonky, but it's because he's a lefty and it shouldn't be a reason to knock off his shooting ability. He's also 85% from the free throw line, a great indicator that his shot will translate to the next level.

  • Decent finisher at the rim. He'll never do anything crazy or flashy, but he'll get to his spot and most likely pull out a scoop layup and get a bucket. He's honestly kind of crafty when it comes to finishing over taller defenders... he'll find himself a way to score.

  • Has noticeably improved as a player compared to last year.

  • Only picks up one foul per game.

+

Worries:

  • Not very tall or big for a point guard, being only 6'3 and 195 pounds. Not the worst height but considering how taller and lengthier guards are starting to be the prototype, it becomes a flaw.

  • Making him go right limits his offensive game heavily considering 90% of the time he's going left. I don't doubt Kolek can still finish when driving on the right side, but it's likely more uncomfortable for him and not the type of look he wants.

  • His efficiency as a scorer is a little questionable, but I wouldn't think about it too much considering he's basically 50% from the field and what he lacks in scoring efficiency he makes up in shooting efficiency.

  • "Rebounds the ball" way more than the average PG according to the stat sheet but I can literally count the number of times I've seen him get a rebound on film (three times).

  • Gets 3 turnovers a night, but he also has the ball most of the game, which would explain why he turns the ball over so much. I'd let this slide considering the number of assists he gets compared to the number of turnovers he gets, but it would still be really nice if he could lower his TO's.

+

Dislikes:

  • Doesn't provide much on the defensive end. He doesn't apply pressure well and it's not like he has pesky hands which he could use to poke the ball out of his opponents grasp and get a steal. I would say he's decent when it comes to reading passes, which is how he averages 1.6 steals a game, but he doesn't do that often enough for me to buy into his defensive prowess (at least in the film I watched).

  • Doesn't really do anything when the ball isn't in his hands, which isn't very often, but in the NBA, he's going to need to adjust and move off the ball to get points... the ball won't always be glued to his fingertips.

  • Doesn't seem to be athletic.

  • Unc prospect, 23 years old and probably doesn't have much more potential in him.

+

Kolek is fun. He's obviously talented in terms of passing ability and there's no doubt a team is going to take a chance on him... he's too good offensively. His frame, defense, and age are all things which could prevent him from going in the first round, but I could still see him making a bid and going late-1st, maybe even mid. Could be an important backup piece on a contending team, wouldn't mind him being a starter on a bad team either.

Player comp: reminds me so much of Jalen Brunson.

Much older prospect but his current talent is undeniable. One of the best passers in the country. Elite in the pick and roll. Really good shooter, amazing percentages on tough shot difficulty. Not great defensively, could see him being an elite backup point guard.

Best floor general in the class and can shoot it. Needs to work on his pull up. Poor defender. Really small. Got a dog in him. Shades of TJ McConnell with a better shot, Ish Smith.

Tyler Kolek has been in the conversation as the best PG in CBB since he joined Marquette.

Offensively is where he shines. He facilitated and ran Shaka Smart's offense perfectly. He is what a lot of contending teams look for in a PG, just a steady hand kind of Tyus Jones-esque. Now I don't think he'll lead the league in assists, but he does have kind of ability offensively, and in the right offense he can get close.

Defensively, he's not great. He is a little bit of a bigger boddied PG, but his lateral quickness just isn't quite there. He was very good at racking up steals, and that could continue into the NBA, but in terms of straight up defense, I don't like the idea of it.

STRENGTHS:

  • Perhaps the smartest American passer in the class; led the nation in assists per game and really develops great chemistry with his big men, particularly with Oso Ighodaro. Known to have a strong basketball IQ

  • Feel for the game and his ability to change speed and pace is rare for players to have; does a great job of throwing off defenders with that and using that to create open looks for shooters and dishes to cutters (nearly 25% of his passes led to a shot, an incredible number)

  • Showed to be a very good shooter; shot 46% on catch and shoot threes and 39% on all three point attempts, will be really great shooting when he operates off the ball

  • His driving game was pretty solid, with crafty around the rim finishes and good footwork in the paint before putting up floaters

  • A competitive defender who has a knack for steals and firing up his teammates with great energy plays and clutch moments; known to have great work ethic

WEAKNESSES:

  • Is the worst athlete in this class from a speed and vertical stand point; will have to really be exceptional in his areas of strength to stay on the court

  • Not an off the dribble shooter; his release makes him more of a catch and shoot shooter, and that was what he was most comfortable with. Becoming a threat off the dribble increases his ceiling

  • Not a mid-range savant like how he can be due to his slower release off of the dribble

  • As a small player, he is going to be targeted defensively; there is no way for him to avoid being switched onto bigger players

Best role upon entering the NBA: Back-up point guard running two-man game with his big man

Player Comparison: Shades of Ty Jerome and Kirk Hinrich
