The reasoning for this is the magic need to open up space and minutes for guys like Jalen Suggs and Cole Anthony, Markelle doesn't quite fit their timeline and isn't better even now than those two guys I just mentioned. Markelle could be a good backup PG to dame, and learn a little more from under him as he has never had a veteran PG to look up to, that could improve his offensive deficiencies. Additionally, Markelle has always been a plus on the defensive side of the ball which helps Portlands defensinve struggles. All for the price of some draft compensation they can strengthen their depth and get a solid backup PG who is under contract for at least 2 years.
