This is a two part trade (same trade linked by 2015 draft picks) I’ve separated the postings into part A & B. Part A: Can Be Found Here: https://fanspo.com/nba/s/general/trades/4qypTb7U4v38wi/7-team-trade-lillard-lavine-derozan-aldama-gafford-picks-part-a I’ve Broken Down Each Team Parts A&B here, I've also "highlighted" players of note
Portland Trailblazers
Nutshell Version: They move Lillard to Miami along with shedding the Nurkic contract. They also gain Daniel Gafford Center. What goes Out: Damian Lillard & Jusuf Nurkic What Comes In: Daniel Gafford & (Cap Filler) Evan Fournier , Kyle Lowry , plus 3 first picks
1.Thier Own Pick (Protected) back from the Bulls 2024 , but would clog up their selections for years
2.2024 Unprotected Miami
3.2028 Unprotected Maimi ---
Reasoning: Well you never full return for a player like Lillard, but jettisoning Nurkic and replacing him with 24 year old Gafford would be a huge win. Fournier’s deal is club option after this season (will be declined) and Lowry is cap filler/buy out candidate. Returning their own pick doesn’t hurt the Bulls that much because with them tanking its going to fall in the protected range but they don’t want to be sending it out 3-4 years down the line. Gafford is a really good player.
Miami Heat
Nutshell Version: They get Lillard and Deion Wright, I can’t think of a better, available, PG to pair with Lillard. Wright can expend his energy on defense while Lillard focuses on scoring the ball. What comes in: 1 2025 first round pick, Damian Lillard, Deion Wright, Jusuf Nurkic What goes Out: Tyler Herro, Caleb Martin and 3 unprotected 1sts plus a 2029 pick swap , on the plus side they jettison Lowry and Duncan Robinson Draft Pick IN: See Description Below ---
Reasoning: Well they want Lillard adding Wright to it just makes sense especially given their PG needs, the 2029 end date while it isn’t “ideal for them” is at least doable especially with only taking on 1 bad contract
Washington Wizards
Nutshell Version: They add picks Yeah! Losing Gafford isn’t ideal but starting a rebuild without picks is hard. What goes Out: Daniel Gafford , Deon Wright , Corey Kispert (Part B) What comes in: 2025 Pick Swap, Duncan Robinson, Andre Drummond, Jerihco Sims , 3 1st round picks (Part A), Cole Anthony (Part B) Draft Pick Breakdwon:
1.Their own from the Knicks, this probably isn’t as valuable to the Knicks as it would be to them if their rebuild is done well
2.Dallas 1st Round Pick (Protected 1-10 2024, 1-10 2025)
3.Unprotected 2026 Miami 1st rounder
Reasoning : I really don’t envy the Wizards rebuild here, they had to do it with moving Beal where he wanted to go which limited their cash out options on a superstar. They also signed Kuzma to a deal that makes him highly tradeable, and traded for Tyrus Jones who is also highly tradeable. Likely by the trade deadline the Wizards could move any of these players plus Cole Anthony or keep Anthony who was the Magic’s 6th man last season and young/cost controlled. As for Corey Kispert he’s been ok but its hard to see much upside and he was picked by the last regime not this one, he shoots well which is why Memphis probably likes him more than the Wizards at this point.
NY Knicks
Nutshell Version: The Knicks add Zach Lavine and Caleb Martin. They move out a good young player in RJ Barrett and a prospect who lost time in Jerihco Sims , they kick out 3 ho-hum protected first rounders and get a 2029 pick swap from Miami What goes Out: RJ Barrett, Jerihco Sims , Evan Fournier (overpaid cap dump) 3 Protected 1st Rounders Outbound 1sts
1.Dallas 1st Rounder (Protected 1-10 2024, 1-10 2025) – Late Lottery at best
2.Washington 1st Rounder (Protected 1-12 2024, 1-10 2025, 1-8 2026) Not very likely to convey
3.Detroit 1st Rounder (Protected 1-18 2024, 1-13 2025, 1-11 2026, 1-9 2027) – Will convey might wait awhile
What Comes in: Zach Lavine & Caleb Martin & Miami 2029 pick swap, that’s a nice pair I’d have to say looking at the Knicks roster it “levels them up”
Reasoning: RJ Barrett struggles from 3 and the Knicks really could use the floor spacing that Zach Lavine provides, between Caleb Martin and Josh Hart the SF position is covered. They have 3 picks that are less valuable to them than others, but sending out RJ and Jerhico plus dumping Evan Fournier seems like a good outcome
Chicago Bulls
Nutshell Version: The Bulls seem adamant they don’t want to rebuild, signing Colby White (yes this keeps them just below the taxpayer line) – this is a major retool.
What Goes Out : Zach Lavine (Part A) , Demar DeRozan (Part B) , Protected Portland Pick (Not Paying Off Anytime Soon) , Andre Drummond , Carlik Jones
Outbound Pick Protections: This is Lottery Protected in each season all the way to 2027. So it won’t convey until the next time the Trailblazers are in the postseason, that won’t be 2024 I think it will convey but that’s a long road to 2027.
What Comes In: Tyler Herro , RJ Barrett, Protected 2024 Detroit Pick, Protected Golden State 2024 Pick (Part B) , Brendan Clarke (Part B) , Luke Kannard (Part B)
Inbound Pick Protections : GSW 1-4 2024, #1 overall 2025
---
Reasoning: Zach Lavine and Demar DeRozan didn’t work, but perhaps Tyler Herro and RJ Barrett will. The Bulls do a total redesign, moving the most players probably helpful to see the overall blue print:
PG: Colby White
SG: Tyler Herro / Luke Kennard
SF: RJ Barrett/Patrick Williams/Luke Kennard
PF: Brendan Clarke/Patrick Williams
C: Nick Vucevic ---
That’s a total shakeup top to bottom Brendan Clarke’s knee injury (recovered) is a concern on a 4 year deal, but the reward here outweight the risk, right now the Bulls are stuck in the middle and don’t want to rebuild, moving two older wings for two younger ones, then drafting complimentary players while they let Herro and Barrett continue to develop makes some sense
Memphis Grizzlies
Nutshell Version: The Grizzlies add Demar DeRozan final piece of title team? They move out prized possession Aldama and the GSW pick while pick swapping to their advantage, maybe, in 2025 plus a Players In; DeMar DeRozan, Cory Kispert, Carlik Jones, Pick Swap (Gain or Risk) Players Out: Brandon Clarke , Luke Kennard, Santi Aldama, 2024 Golden State Warriors Pick ---
Reasoning: For Memphis even with the JaMorant suspension, Demar DeRozan could well be the missing piece to a championship. He’s a two-way-wing who has won a title before and slides right down into the SF spot. Massive upgrade over the departed Dillon Brooks. He maybe 33, he may have only 1 year left on his deal but lots of reasons to think he could be the final piece. The only thing DeRozan doesn’t do is hit 3’s and even moving out Luke Kennard and Aldama they have enough of that. Kispert puts pressure on Williams to perform in a backup role and Carlik Jones is an emergency point guard. As a small market team while they don’t necessarily want to move on from Brendan Clarke now maybe the time to do so his deal isn’t huge but it runs 4 years, his ACL is better but it’s a risk. DeRozan more than makes up for it.
Orlando Magic
Nutshell Version: The Magic send out Cole Anthony along with a possible 2025 pick or pick swap unicorn stretch 4/5 Santi Aldama who provides them a viable Banchero backup right away while posing some upside at Center as well. Players In: Santi Aldama , Possible 2025 Pick Swap Players Out: Cole Anthony, Possible 2025 Pick Reasoning: Aldama highly coveted 7’0” with 3 point shooting ability still raw defensively works on the Magic’s timeline and at worst is a Banchero backup with court spacing chops. It’s a crowded Orlando backcourt, Anthony is headed for RFA land and the Magic do need someone at 4 other than Isaac.
2025 Pick Wording.
That 2025 Pick makes the whole deal start, without it, the Heat cannot send out 3 picks. Washington, Orlando , and Memphis hold 4 picks between them 1 of which is lightly protected. The Heat, must receive 1 guaranteed pick in 2025 in order to send out picks. So here is the wording:
If The Memphis Grizzlies win an NBA title in 2023 or 2024 -and- the Denver Pick owed to Orlando in 2025 (protected 1-5) coneys then among the Washington Wizards and Orlando Magic whomever shall , post-draft lottery, have the higher pick shall have the option to retain that pick and send the 2nd and 3rd most favorable picks to the other involved party (Washington or Orland) and send the 4th pick to the Miami Heat.
If the Denver pick owed to Orlando is not conveyed in 2025, then team with the highest pick among Memphis , Orlando , and Miami shall receive the highest pick, the team with the 2nd best pick the 2nd best and the 3rd pick shall belong to the Miami Heat. The remaining rights to the Denver pick revert to Orlando.
If the Memphis Grizzlies do not win an NBA title in 2023 or 2024 -and- the Denver Pick conveys to Orlando – and- either Washington or Orlando’s pick or falls outside slots 1-14 then Memphis has the right to swap positions with either Orlando or Washington whichever has the worst pick in that range. If the Denver pick falls 11-29 Memphis also has the right to swap with that pick. Except for those conditions Washington and Orlando retain their own picks and the Miami Heat retain the least desirable of the 4 selections.
Basically the only way Memphis Loses a 2025 Pick : They win an NBA title or have a better record than any of Washington , Orlando , and Denver -and- Denver is in the lottery in pick's 1-5. They could also gain a small swap out of it if Washington or more likely Orlando makes the 2025 playoff picture.
