Why do the Raptors do this? Two Main reasons: First, the raptors have hinted that they want to move the team into Scottie's hands and moving Pascal is the way to do this. Two, the Raptors avoid locking themselves into a Brad Beal level contract until the 2028 season (not that Pascal is not deserving of a big pay day just not the super-max). Along with getting three future first's and two interesting youngish three and d roll players in Bay and Hunter to support the already strong group of three & d roll players they already have along with getting Scottie the ball more and the goal being to move him up to the starting point guard spot with them still having DS in case it "SB at PG" experiment goes to shit.
Why do the Hawks do this? There are a few reasons. First being that they need more star power. While Dejontay Murray is a border line all-star and capable of being a go to guy on a bad team like in 2021 he just isn't reliable enough to be a number two on a contending level team (which is obesely where the Hawks want to be). With this trade they finally get the perfect number two for Trae while letting Murray slide into more of a complimentary roll. Pascal fits the gap of an elite defender who can create on his own and doesn't need the ball in his hands to thrive. The second is finally get Oneka the PT he deserves and finally moving off of the Cappela contract and moving off the Hunter contract as well. Oneka is a great talent and fits greatly in the starting five epically with Pascal. Finally they get those two contracts off the books along with a potential Bay extension in order to get the proper flexibility to resign Pascal.
Finally, why do the Mav's do this? Really simple, they need a starting center who can hold it up on the defensive side. They haven't had an above defender since Tingus Pingus and even at that he really didn't become good on that end till he got to Washington. So, with this they have to give up THJ, but they can easily give his starting spot to Josh Green. Also, with this trade they can allow Derrick Livley to develop behind Cappela for the next one-two year's before giving him the full rains.
