Lakers Add Much Needed Depth While Keeping the Core Pieces

SUCCESS

As a Lakers Fan this is the type of deal I hope the Lakers make. With so much unknown about this season (when does AD come back, who can they afford to resign, is Lebron planning on leaving) I think a trade like this vastly improves the team without mortgaging the future.

Projected depth chart: PG: Schroder/Russ SG: Reaves/Burks/Christie SF: Oubre/Walker IV PF: Lebron/Washington/Gabriel C: Davis/Bryant

I'm very high in PJ Washington, as I think his versatility makes him incredibly valuable. He can confidently play the 3-5 and is a great switchable defender who can space the floor. I'd be interested to see how well he fits next to AD and Lebron, but also could see him at the 5 when the Lakers decide to go small. Kelly Oubre is not exceptional at any one skill, but is very good in many areas. He might be the best player the Lakers receive in this trade and I could see his game go up a level playing next to stars like AD and Lebron, or being set up by Russ going against other second units. Oubre is the prototypical wing the Lakers are in dire need of. Lastly, Alec Burks is an absolute sniper from three who is also very versatile offensively. He's a proven spark off the bench who would be lethal in a second unit with guys like Russ and Bryant.

The only drawback with a trade like this is that the Lakers will probably not be improving the starting lineup significantly. At the end of games, AD and Lebron will be best at the 5 and 4 respectively. Oubre will likely slot in at the 3, leaving the two guard spots available. Although Burks would be the best three point shooter on the team I wouldn't feel completely comfortable having him finish games. Perhaps Reaves and one of either Russ or Lonnie Walker will still be the best option after this trade.

Overall, for one protected FRP, an unprotected SRP and expiring contracts, the Lakers give themselves more lineup flexibility and bring some much needed youth an floor spacing. Additionally, if a game changing trade becomes available in the offseason, the Lakers still have their 2023 and 2029 FRP available.
