If the Celtics lose game 7 Brown will want out. The Celtics can lose him for nothing in free agency in 2024 (Which they can’t afford if they want to keep Jayson Tatum happy) or get valuable pieces in return to keep them competitive. In this trade the Celtics downgrade a 26 points per game scorer to a 20 point scorer while also being a younger prospect. They upgrade their PF to a 25 point per game scorer in Julius Randle who also was All NBA 3rd team and an all star. The celtics also keep vet Al Horford who they had starting this year to create floor spacing off the bench. They also get a promising sg in Quentin grimes who is a tremendous low usage rate shooter. The Celtics mix up their team by getting younger and valuable assets they can keep or use in other trades down the line to add another championship level piece.

This replaces the Knicks second star in Julius Randle with Jaylen Brown. They do this trade to get a better chance of reaching the conference finals by becoming a faster team automatically with brown on the court instead of Randle. The Knicks also shorten their roster which would’ve been a problem if they had not done this trade because of the amount of valuable contributors the Knicks have off the bench. The Knicks overpay Gallinari simply to get this deal down with the hope that Jaylen Brown resigns with the team.
