Pistons

+2 players ($19.2m) +1 pick,
Cap Impact - $10.3M

-2  Wins

-15.74  MPG

-1.81  Off.

+3.06  Def.

LA receives:

Mike Conley / Alec Burks / Bojan Bogdanovic / Kelly Olynk

DET receives:

Pat Bev / Rudy Gay / 2027 FRP via. LA

UTAH receives:

Russell Westbrook / Kendrick Nunn / 2nd round pick

In this deal, the Utah jazz advance their draft position while shedding off some of their contracts in favor of expiring money. Moving off of Conley, olynk, and rudy gay frees up cap space for next season and increases their odds at wembenyama. These three don't really have FRP value the way contracts like Clarkson and Beasley do so it makes little sense for AInge to hold on to them and halt their progress. The 10M the take on in this deal and can be recovered in buyout negotiations with Russell Westbrook. The finances of this deal are important as in the offseason it was reported that Utah didn't want to be a tax-paying team since they were clearly trying to tank. To summarize: this deal accomplishes three main things for the Jazz

  1. Increases lottery odds

  2. Frees up cap space by moving off of multi-year deals

  3. Reduces tax payment

For the Pistons they sell on bogi while his value is high and net back a first-round pick in exchange for him while also creating a 10M TPE by sending out Burks as well. With Cade Cunningham out, it doesn't make sense to try and push for a play in appearance. Selling on a vet that doesn't fit your timeline for a first is a much better proposition for Detroit. The pistons essentially are turning kelly olynk and saben lee into a 2027 first rounder which is a pretty great turn of events for the developing pistons. They could view bev as a locker room vet the way they viewed rose or they could build up his value and ship him out again around the trade deadline to bring in more value.

The Lakers stock up on their depth in this deal while also maintaining some future flexibility. The teams biggest areas of weakness are

  • Lack of size on the perimeter

  • Shooting

  • No backup center

This deal helps fix most of those issues. Burks and Bojan add some much-needed size at (6'6 and 6"7) respectively and are capable floor spacers. A starting lineup of reaves / burks / bojan / bron / davis has the size to contend with most teams on a nightly basis. One of the biggest arguments I've seen against moving russ is that it would be hard to mimic his playmaking production. However, I believe Mike conley as the sixth man could alleviate some of those concerns. Conley's been averaging 7.5 assists a game with 1.5 turnovers giving him one of the better assist-to-turnover ratios in the league. While he wont meet the ceiling of russ his floor is much higher and Conley, in general, is a more consistent player. Kelly olynk would fill the void as the team's backup center and would be a legit threat from distance. This would allow the lakers to play him and davis together without affecting davis' positioning inside. This deal also gives LA some flexibility for the future.

Mike Conley becomes an expiring contract in the summer as does olynk and burks has a team option. If that option is picked up it gives LA 44M in tradeable salary plus 2 picks to work with in the summer ( one of the 27-29 firsts and another first from NOLA ). LA could use these assets to further reavmp the roster and potentially chase a star which we know is appealing to the Laker's FO.
