This is the most risky trade for both teams but could prove to be a win-win.
For the Pacers, Jarace Walker is barely getting any playing time behind Siakam and Toppin. With the emergence of Mathurin, Nesmith is becoming expendable. The Pacers are also a bottom 5 team of protecting the paint and they have a clear need for a backup Center. Isaiah Stewart ensures they always have a stretch big who can defend the paint between him and Turner. Fontecchio is added to be a sharp shooter off the bench as the Pacers are losing two rotation-level forwards.
The Pistons should consider this as they get younger on the wing and could be getting two forwards of the future. Nesmith slides into the starting lineup at the 3 and they take a chance on Jarace Walker who can sit behind Tobias Harris who would mentor him for 2 years. By the time Tobias’s contract is up, Detroit would have Ausar Thompson, Aaron Nesmith, Ron Holland, Jarace Walker, and Bobi Klintman holding down the forward room. By then, at least 3 of the 5 should be proven NBA starting caliber wings/forwards.
