A really long, wirey athlete with some INSANE athleticism, which is very functional, as he is a menace on the defensive end of the court, and can grab for balls that don’t seem reachable for a normal person. He has a solid handle, and a good grasp of the offensive game overall. His shot is the swing skill for sure, but an athlete that smooth will likely make something work out at the next level. He seems to not have his head in the clouds, so I’m rooting hard for this guy.

Comparison: Scottie Lewis from earlier in this draft

Ceiling: Will Barton Floor: Young DJJ

Lawson showed quickness and two-way impact as a 6-7 shooting guard in the combine. He got after it on the boards, and showed his explosiveness in the open court. Though not the best shooter yet, he does show glimpses of the shot and can finish at the rim and score. He posted one of the quickest times at the combine and shows plenty of potential on the defensive end with some length. I'm hoping he adds to his frame so teams won't think they can push him around.

Projected draft range: 50-undrafted

Height 6'6 Weight 180 lbs Wingspan 6'7

Offense

  • Quick fluid release, looks NBA ready. High volume 10 3PA per 40 @ 35%, 70% FT

  • Fast and springy athlete. 41 inch max vertical, but didn't necessarily use this a ton.

  • 53% of his offense was spot ups or transition. Was effective in very limited time as a P&R ball handler, but hard to see him being used for anything other than a spot up role.

Defense

  • Not great at closing out.

  • Struggled in P&R defense.

  • 1.9 STL per 40. Active hands.

Swing Factors

  • Shooting Stroke is even better than thought and his C&S goes to the next level.

  • He has untapped P&R ball handling skills that have been unseen.

Role

  • Spot up shooter with room to grow as an attacker.

  • LOW: Goes to G-League and determines he will be best suited for overseas as a shooting guard 3pt shooter.

  • HIGH: His defense grades out average, his shooting stroke becomes a long term sustainable weapon, and he utilizes his athleticism fully becoming a rotational piece.
