Big Board Rankings

Strengths

  • One of the best players in the college game. Consensus first-team All-American and winner of the Bob Cousy Award, presented to the nation's top point guard. Averaged 20.1 points, 6.3 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game while shooting 39% from 3-point range and 78% from the free throw line, leading Illinois to the Big Ten Conference tournament title and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.

Areas to Improve

  • Lacks a degree of high-end strength and explosiveness. More of a secondary ball-handler than a high-volume creator in the halfcourt. Game is heavily reliant on skill and instincts; doesn't have the highest margin for error due to his average tools. Just an average finisher in the halfcourt. Struggled at times against bigger and stronger defenders in the Big Ten.

The most unheralded prospect in this draft, and I can''t understand why. His ceiling may be a little lower but he can everything pretty proficiently. His defense and athleticism immediately translate. Hopefully his jumpshot this year is sustainable, that''s the swing skill. But his playmaking, defense, and clutchness (most clutch player in the NCAA) make him a no brainer top 10 guy in my eyes.

Ayo Dosunmu possesses the clutchness, feel for the game, three-level scoring, and all-around game you want for a 6-5 Guard. He can set up his teammates, has improved his range and three point shot overall, and can easily make the tough shots. Yet he is more of a below the rim player, limiting his ability to rebound, and needs to add a little more strength. He should be able to knock down threes at a respectable rate

Projected draft range: 18-30

Going absolutely ham in year 3 - 22+ PPG 49/42/82 shooting splits with nearly 7 boards and 5 assists. Pushes tempo in transition. Long and fast, athletic strides get him to the cup with solid handles and combo moves. These combo moves also collapses defenses for easy finds under the cup to his bigs. If they don''t collapse and play conservative he will pull up and hit middys. Stiff upright defense can be worrisome. Does not do well against screens. Time and time again he finds himself playing catch up around a screen or giving the incorrect driving lane angle. The NBA will not allow that luxury. Even though he gives max second effort to effect shots he''s a pump fake away from a foul. Good on closeouts for the most part. One on one he should be able to guard most on the perimeter.

Ayo is a beast on the defense side and a dribbler and ball control on the offensive side of the ball.

Dosunmo can score well, and is a safer pick. He should immideatley contribute but has a lower ceiling.

Draft range: 14-22

Positives

-Loves attacking in transition, great at getting the ball and pushing it immediately, great going downhill

-Upside as a shot creator, uses his long strides and great change of speed to get by, has a nice crossover combo to create some space for a jumper

-Solid in the PnR, finds a way to snake the pick and get to his spots, a great pull-up mid range shooter, had some nice assists to Kofi Cockburn

-Good defender on-ball, uses his size and length to swallow up opponents with the ball, really gets around screens well, could guard 1-3 in the NBA

Negatives

-There are still real questions about his 3 point shot, improved but had some struggles when teams went under screens and ESPECIALLY off the catch, also didn't show off a lot of range, probably will take some time before he's a real threat

-Handle can be a bit loose, struggled with handling traps in some games

-Sometimes doesn't really read the defense and just forces a pass to Cockburn, needs to keep his options open as a playmaker

Likely range: 20-35

I think he’s got a lot of similarities to a prime Oladipo. Great defensively and has very good offensive game also has same build and height as Oladipo.

He has been playing his mind out so far. Ayo Dosunmo is a good prospect against maybe the most proven competition of any prospect pound for pound for his position. He has ideal size for his position and is a solid athlete. He is one of the older prospects in this draft class. He can improve defensively, but his efficient ability to create his own shot and knock it down or give an opportunity for his teammates is phenomenal. He is a cross between NAW/Seth Curry offensively. Defensively it is a bit inexcusable why he is not making more turnovers happen. The game against Marcus Carr, where he messed around and had a triple double may have put him as another POY favorite for a minute. Then he his face got injured. Dosunmu overall had a fantastic season. His basketball smarts and play helped Illinois become a 1 seed in the tourney, although they did get beat pretty good by Loyola Chicago in the round of 32 in a great game.

I''ve put off writing about Ayo because of some inevitable homer-ism, but here goes. Simply put, Ayo is just an NBA player. In his Junior season, he''s a composed scorer all around the court and is still growing as a passer. But in particular, he is particularly proficient at the rim. I''m not sure if Ayo projects to be as talented of a layup finisher at the next level, but he''s the type of player with an a knack for hitting big shots, for being in the right spot on the floor, for playing calm and composed. I don''t think he''ll ever be a star in the NBA to the degree that he was a star in college- but I''d have a hard time believing that Ayo''s complete game, great athleticism, and solid frame to play either guard position doesn''t translate to being either a reliable, replacement level starter or one an excellent one of the first people off your bench.
