Remember Marcus Bagley? Well that’s Chris Smith, except a fair bit worse at everything. He may have a jump shot, but both free throws and threes are pretty topsy turvy percentage wise. His defense is more theoretical than anything at this point, but he is a solid athlete. He has a really desirable frame for an NBA team, but also a body that suffers major major injuries. Hope it works for him though, could make a lot of cash.

Despite playing limited games, Smith showed some nice three point shooting. He shot 50 percent from three in nearly 10 games and showed some spot up shooter potential. While he isn't the 3&D wing, and has some work to do to improve his defense, Smith has nice length and size to guard forwards and should at least be average defensively, hopefully.

Projected draft range: 50-undrafted

Height 6'9 Weight 215 lbs Wingspan 7'1 DOB Dec 24, 1999 (21 years old) Pre-Draft Team UCLA (Sr)

Offense

  • Nice looking stroke and shooting base.

  • Looks NBA C&S ready.

  • Not a quick twitch athlete, but has nice long strides.

  • Likes to operate out of the high post and baseline on pull-up middys - effective there.

  • Smooth turnaround.

  • Positive offensive rebounder.

  • Sound finisher on the attack with a full head of steam.

  • Could still have plenty of untapped potential to bring to his game.

  • Handles have workable navigation, but his center of gravity is too high at times.

Defense

  • Long arms and height allow him to sky in for boards, still improving in this area and it''s becoming a real asset.

  • The lateral quickness isn't bad, but stays too upright at time.

  • Needs to add some strength, will struggle initially with mature NBA wings and bigs.

  • Decent defensive awareness.

Swing Factors

  • Defensive Versatility - Not what you'd call a 3&D wing, but not a terrible defender either. Who does he defend? Hopefully he can hold his own against most wings and some bigs down the road.

  • Offensive Role - What does he bring to the table? There appears to be some 3-level scoring potential. Does he start as a C&S guy or more of an inside finisher?

Role

  • A versatile offensive wing who rebounds fairly well.

  • LOW: Smith's ACL injury slows him down early in his career and his skills fail to stick in the league. He finds himself in the G-league with a couple short NBA stints.

  • HIGH: Smith overcomes his ACL tear quickly and asserts that he can do a multitude of trades offensively. His pull-up, turnaround and finishing all look smooth. He knocks down his perimeter attempts, grades as an above average wing defender and rebounds really well. Smith has no problem holding down a spot in any bench rotation.
