A 6’6”, 255 lb player? Who plays like a guard? That’s right. David Roddy from Colorado State is one of the most unique players to watch. He shoots threes at a high clip, but is big enough to post up centers. His unique style of play has garnered him the attention of scouts. His shooting is absolutely incredible. His three point percentage is hovering around 45%. While we didn’t get to see much of him in the NCAA tournament, he had a fantastic regular season. He can pull up off the dribble, or catch and shoot from the corner. Surprisingly, he isn’t a bad vertical athlete. He can get above the rim when necessary. It may not be his first move, but it is in his bag of tricks. He’s not crazy fast, so he can struggle on defense. He collects lots of blocks and steals though. His playmaking is solid. He’s a good passer, but sometimes can be overly underconfident. He has some reluctance to shoot from deep even though he is elite from behind the arc. Roddy is a hard worker with a good motor, so the sky's the limit for him.

  • Versatile college 4 that can shoot, pass, rebound and take care of the ball.

  • Skilled, but athletic enough to play at the next level?

  • Primarily plays out of the post. Spots up a fair amount as well. But very active cutting, in transition and grabbing offensive rebounds.

  • Good looking lift on his perimeter jumper. High fluid release for his size.

  • Very good rebounder.

  • Strong interior player should be able to handle a fair amount of NBA bigs on the inside.

He is a scrappy player, he brings the energy to the game and to the crowd. He is really almost a Bobby Portis-lite and that's good.

Player analysis

David Roddy is a football player that decided to learn how to play basketball, he is the most built player in the draft maybe outside of Kofi Cockburn. Roddy is 6’6 and 260 pounds and has the size of a running back but has a surprising amount of touch, if you told most people he was a basketball player you would think he relies on a bully-ball style of play but that's not the case. Roddy has a great midrange game and possesses a lot of finesse, he even brings it out to three at a solid rate and can certainly hit an open three for an NBA team. David doesn’t bully other players but he does use his size to not allow himself to get bullied, he played a lot of shorter bigs but because of his frame I wouldn’t even describe him as a small-ball center. For a bigman he has so much skill, teams love his traits in their centers and I think many teams will fight over him in the early second round. Roddy is a good perimeter defender who keeps his man on the outside which partly due to sheer presence, he lacks the length to be a great interior guy but he doesn’t let players past him and has a high IQ on that end. He isn’t a shot blocker but is still good for a team looking for serviceable inside defense. David can make nice outlet passes but isn’t a ball handler and I think teams will value that highly since he won’t be a primary creator. he lead his team to the March Madness tournament and won conference player if the year, he managed to lead a team even with being a very talented creator but instead used his skill and unique frame to make an impact.

David Roddy is an all-around good bench player. That should get you into the first round. He will contribute right away with his scoring and hustle. If he can keep his 3 ball up he will be a solid 3&D player when used against less athletic guards and forwards. He won't be a superstar but he will be a great bench player and will get good minutes in the playoffs.`In addition, he will be ready to contribute when drafted. That should be worth a first-round pick any year.

NBA comp: A worse Draymond Green. `

Strengths:

  • I would say the only player in the draft who can play every single position at the NBA level

  • A very good 3 point shooter who can really heat up, shot 43% from 3 this year in college

  • A massive player, his muscle mass is what enables him to play small ball 4 and even small ball 5

  • Can bully his way inside with ease

  • Can defend 1 through 5, is a smart defender

  • Strangely quick on his feet for his size

  • Shot 57% from the field this year

  • Has amazing court feel and is an elite playmaker

  • Elite at finding his roll man in the pick and roll

  • Even has the ability to throw some flashy no look passes

  • Excellent footwork inside

  • Has a really nice up and under

  • A very good rebounder due to his weight

  • Great length with a 6'11 wingspan

  • Weighs a whopping 261 pounds

Flaws:

  • Only 6'5 which is extremely short for a power forward

  • A little bit older (2001)

  • Shot not great from the line this past year at 69%

  • I'm skeptical of his ability to play as a role player in a offense

  • Lack of any true position could be seen as a downside by some teams

i think its weird that Roddy is listed as a PF on here. yes he played PF in college but he doesnt have the size for it so he will play the 3 at the NBA level. he has good scoring ability plus while not being an insanely high 3 point shooter attempts wise he shot them at a good clip so theres always that going for him

Good ability to score on PNR situations, shot mechanics allow him to stretch the floor from below-average playmakers. Works hard in the post to get to his spots and takes post-fades at a high level. Big enough to make noise on defense.

Size in question in the league. Playing forward at 6'5 is difficult to gauge at an NBA level. Basically, his size is the only downsize to his game, because he's too big to play guard, but not tall enough to play forward. Gonna be tough for him to find his footing in the league.
