Strengths

  • Naismith and Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. Arguably the best on-ball defender in the draft. Strong frame. Sturdy lower body. Lightning-quick feet. Does a tremendous job of taking on-ball charges. Great anticipation. Fights over the top of screens. Battles on switches. Plays much bigger than his measurements suggest. Elite defender from day one in the NBA.

Areas to Improve

  • Doesn't have elite size or length, which limits his ability to see over the top of the defense as a passer in traffic. Finished product physically. Will be 23 years old in September.

Only two knocks against this guy; age and size. He is so good at basically everything, and really reminds me of Donovan Mitchell, everything about him. He can lock up, but when given a bigger offensive role he kinda throws that to the way side. He got some nice handles and his jumpshot is buttery. Too bad hes so old but this guy will rise in draft boards, probably mine as well. Also should be understood that maybe his shooting was a fluke due to the otherworldy development this season.

Comparison: Sidney Moncrief

Ceiling: A poor mans Sidney Moncrief

Davion Mitchell is similar to Jrue Holiday of the Milwaukee Bucks. He plays tough defense, can score from all three levels, and can pass. He''s a lot older than prospects in this draft as he is a senior, but I trust his game will translate to the next level. He doesn''t rebound as much as you like and bursted onto the scene a little late, but I trust his game will impact winning basketball. It's going to be hard to put a 6-0 guy in socks together though, especially on the defensive end, where he will face longer athletes.

Projected draft range: 6 to just outside of lottery

6''2 with 6''5 wingspan. Clamp down defender. 2.9 STL/40 so far this year. Has seen dramatic improvements in his 3pt% this year, but his 68 career FT% remains pedestrian and just up to 72% this year. Ast/40 have made a dramatic improvement this year up to 8.1 but Turnovers remain a problem at 4.1/40.

Tier 6 Floor - low-end rotation Bullseye - rotation player Ceiling - secondary starter

Davion Mitchell is a dynamic, high motor guard who is skilled on the offensive side of the ball and scrappy on the defensive end.

I am dumb as hell. I deadass thought him and Donavon were related. He does has one helluva finishing and great shooting form. He reminds me of Powell when he shoots.

Davion Mitchell is a GREAT all around player. He is a EXCELLENT defender, a efficient, and a good scorer. His defense should instantly translate to the NBA level. Offensively, he should also be a good passer and a good, but not great scorer.

Floor: Marcus Smart but a worse defender

Ceiling: Jrue Holiday with a 3

Comparison: Jrue Holiday

The only problem with Mitchell is his age.

Draft range: 7-16

THIS ONLY HAPPENS IF THE WARRIORS DONT TRADE THEIR PICK

Positives

-A pretty good athlete, most intriguing is his explosiveness, especially combined with his strength and a solid vertical leap, really good at changing pace, great first step

-An elite on-ball defender, very laterally quick and strong, takes contact right to the chest, forced a ton of turnovers and took frustrating on-ball charges, really pressures the ball, good help-defense, some very high IQ plays in the passing lanes and while taking charges

-Intriguing upside as a shot creator, shifty with the ball, explosive crossovers, between the legs moves and hesitation dribbles. shot really well on off the dribble jumpers all over the floor

-Gets to the rim well and explosive enough to finish, very crafty with reverses, off-foot layups etc. Didn''t use the floater much but showed nice flashes

-A much improved 3 point shooter after the first few years which were a struggle, hit a lot off the dribble and off the catch (relocated well to open spots), very mechanically sound, always facing the rim

-Solid playmaking potential, another much improved part of his game, can make the right read in the PnR and off drives often enough, could be a good secondary creator if things click

Negatives

-Questions about his shooting are still very real, a sudden spike in 3 point shooting while his FT% is still pretty below average

-Should tighten up his handle a bit

-Had some struggles on drives at times, could get a bit out of control and made finishes more complicated, needs to control his pace better, a bit too left hand dominant and had some problems over length, his free throw rate is pretty low and this will be crucial for his shot creating potential, especially if he isn''t the sharpshooter he looked like at Baylor last season

-Has some decision making limitations and it''s very unlikely he''s a primary ball handler/creator, PnR polish isn''t quite there

-Will be 23 by next season, even though his ceiling is higher than it is given credit for, some polish or lack-there-of will be hard to work on at this point

-At 6''2, there are still questions about how effective he''ll be on bigger players when switched onto them, despite showing good potential here, short players are always at a disadvantage

Likely range: 7-20

I think a mix of Kemba Walker and Patrick Beverley is a good way to describe Mitchell. Has tons of potential on the offensive end yet is an elite defender who is gonna go hard defensively against anyone and everyone.

A huge piece in the top notch back court play of Baylor this year. He has great hands and plays awesome defense in transition and on the perimeter. He plays great in the double teams and is a good team defender. Davion Mitchell has good speed and quickness along with long range ability on offense. He has a nice quick release on his shot. He is a score first G, but is a capable passer as well. He is among the oldest of the prospects in this class. He is ready to win right now and can easily help out many teams that need a perimeter 3&D player. He will be relevant from day 1, as Davion Mitchell can play off of anyone. His tournament play has been phenomenal. He generally comes up big in big games, and although Butler gets more Wooden Award votes, Mitchell is every bit as good give or take on your preference of player or where you are at as a team now.
