Alston seems to be a sleeper in this years class. He’s a tall guard at 6’9, and has a really nice shooting stroke. He hits his free throws and threes, and is an adequate playmaker. I don’t expect him to be able to create his own shots in the league, but I think he could hit threes and be a solid defender and just maybe do something in the pick and roll every once in a while.

A 6-9 forward with some length, Alston is a decent shooter but can't hoist up too many shots. He needs to add some frame, and has limited upside as a senior and probably limited experience against top competition. A smooth shooting stroke and he also proved he can score against top competition, playing a good game against a Top 25 team where he converted on 6 of 16 threes. Hopefully his length will compensate for his skinny 6-9 frame, because bigger SFs may be able to overpower him and get to the rim.

Projected draft range: 2nd round to undrafted

Height 6'9 Weight 190 lbs Wingspan 7 foot DOB Sep 17, 1997 (23 years old) Pre-Draft Team Boise St. (Sr-RS)

Offense

  • NBA athlete with bounce.

  • Great looking stroke and a high volume 3pt shooter, 7.8 3pa at 38% last year. 86 FT%.

  • Slinky body.

  • Good off the bounce finishing and attacking.

  • Really sound at getting to a good spot to capitalize in transition.

  • Savvy coming off ball.

  • Not expected to be a playmaker at the next level.

  • Has a pullback on his shot that doesn't bode well for a quick release.

Defense

  • Good length, should be able to use this on closeouts.

  • Lacks lateral burst to defend P&R ballhandler and can have trouble coming off-screens.

  • Can be prone to blow bys.

    Swing Factors

  • Defensive Mobility - Hips seem rigid and he can really get lost out there if you throw a lot of movement at him. Is he going to be able to hold his own against larger wings? Right now it's hard to imagine he has the strength to contain the inside.

  • Shooting Consistency/Mechanics - Is his perimeter shooting consistent enough and is the release quick enough? If the answer is no it will be hard to see Alston finding a place in the league.

Role

  • A three point shooting wing with enough length and finishing ability to help out in transition.

  • LOW: Alston doesn't bring enough to the floor in any particular area and goes overseas to become stretch the floor, catch and shoot wing.

  • HIGH: Alston knocks down perimeter shots early and often, he builds on this with tough attacking in transition, and on straight line drives. His defensive length starts to aid him in help defense and his a formidable team defender. He finds a role as a bench contributor.

This kid could be a great fit for this starting lineup in a year. If we send him the g for a bit or even a year he could be deadly. Phenomenal steal.
