I will admit, this is probably too high on a guy most of you have probably never even heard of. However, the tools are just too much to pass up. Onu didn’t play D1 basketball this year, he played at a small school called Shawnee State. He was the clear cut best player, standing at 6’11, 245 pounds, with a 7’3 + wingspan. His jumper is super buttery and got him 40%+ on a good amount of attempts from three, and he has some of the best athleticism in the class. He was a high school track and field star, and his explosiveness off the ground is probably the best in the center class, and some of the best in the entire class. His second jump is phenomenal, and his anticipatory defense led to him getting 5+ blocks a game. I’m not really looking at the stats, I’m looking at the tools, and I am confident that those tools will translate to the next level. Will probably move down on my board once my recency bias goes away a bit, but he is for real.

Comparison: Myler Turner

Ceiling: Deandre Ayton but better at shooting and defense Floor: Mo Bamba a year ago END OF TIER 6

Onu is one of the most unique prospects in tis class. He's a Division II guy, but was a high school track star and has a buttery three-point stroke with a nice 6-11 frame for a power forward. He averaged 16 a game and 5 blocks on 57 percent shooting and 40 percent from three. Now that's good! Has some nice IQ and although a senior, has some real upside with his defensive body at 240 pounds with a long wingspan.

Projected draft range: 30-undrafted

Height 6'11 Wingspan 7'6

Offense

  • Obviously his wingspan jumps off the page. Making him a massive target inside.

  • Raw post game - lacks NBA counters to prove he's a real target here. Does have a developing turnaround hook that looks convincing.

  • Beautiful stroke, remarkable for his size. Should be a perimeter threat from day one although he does lower the ball to his hip occasionally. 75 FT%

  • Obvious lob threat and dunker spot candidate.

  • Mobility and fluidity is impressive and encouraging for a man of his size.

  • Should create a couple extra possessions per 36 based on sheer size alone.

Defense

  • Remarkable shot blocker. Post ups probably won't go well against him. 4.55 BLK in 29.6 MPG

  • Just an average rebounder for his size.

  • Length is going to effect shots. Good on closeouts as well.

  • P&R defense is a concern. Not sure that he can handle these situations and will probably be a liability on the perimeter until further notice.

  • Footwork isn't bad at all, quite fluid for size, at times he looks convincing defending smaller matchups in space on the perimeter.

Swing Factors

  • Post-up Game - If this part of his game makes the strides that are possible he becomes a true inside-out threat.

  • Defensive Mobility/Switchability - Against NAIA competition it's hard to tell how he'd fair against others in the incoming class let alone NBA vets. If he can work on his footwork and become a competent P&R defender. His value skyrockets.

Role

  • One of the most intriguing under the radar prospects, teams drafting Onu will look for him to eventually become a shot blocking, floor spacing big with upside to do even more in the way of a potential rim protector.

  • LOW: Onu's skills proved to be much more effective in NAIA environment, but he remains rostered for his rare size and floor spacing ability. He hangs around playing sparingly in the NBA or goes overseas where he is utilized heavily and has a highly successful career.

  • HIGH: Onu is the steal of the draft becoming a starter and a truly rare NBA talent possessing elite length, shot blocking, legit rim protection, knockdown perimeter shooting, and a bag of post moves to effectively score inside.
