Strengths

  • Has outstanding positional size for the wing at 6-9. Young for his class, not turning 20 until late August, making him the same age or younger than many freshman. Has grown considerably over the past few years and has a well-proportioned frame that should continue to fill out nicely in the coming years. Despite his youth, is one of the most experienced players in the draft, having played 59 games professionally in Europe as well as being the best player on a No. 1 seed NCAA tournament team this past season.

Areas to Improve

  • Lacks a degree of quickness and explosiveness. High center of gravity on both ends of the floor. Will get beat off the bounce at times in one-on-one situations and gets knocked off his path somewhat easily en route to the rim. Will need to get stronger and become more physical with his approach to reach his full potential on both ends of the floor.

I''ve watched enough Joe Ingles to know this guy can be special. Another case of brilliant basketball IQ, sweet passing, and a pretty stroke all in a big wings frame. Franz competes HARD, reminds me of his brother in that sense, and I think that the fans of most teams will not be a fan of this guy. He will be a pest, partly because of his lock down defense, partly because of his odd ability to always know where to be. I have no doubt this dude will contribute, but depending on his mid range shot, will decide whether he is an all star or not.

Projected draft range: 8 to late lottery

Franz Wagner is a 6-9 wing who can lock down defensively, score from all three levels, and pass the ball. The brother of Mo, I expect him to be a spot up shooter and passer like Joe Ingles for the Utah Jazz. He doesn''t have much of a main skill similar to Johnson, but his all-around game is more than appealing. Wagner's versatality, IQ, experience, and fit with any squad makes him a top dude, even with a limited path to scoring. Think prime time Nicolas Batum as an All-Star who impacts the game in other ways besides scoring and also can score when needed.

Corner 3pt specialist. Smart savy player who gets into the right spots and has fluidity moving, but isn''t quick or explosive. 49/32/86 suggests highly effective 3pt totals going forward. 3 to 1 AST/TO ratio this year, excellent passing IQ. Major upticks in BLKS 1.21 & STLS 1.43 speaks to his IQ. Best young player in German U18 league. 9.7 RBD per 40. 5+ OBOX & DBOX puts him in an exclusive list including: Xavier Tillman, Marcus Smart, Tyreke Evans, Zion, Otto Porter Jr, Mikal Bridges, KAT, Anthony Davis, Ethan Happ, Jared Butler.

Franz Wagner is a 6'9 two-way wing out of Michigan who has a lot of defensive upside and reasons to be encouraged about his offensive capabilities.

Franz is way better than Mo. He has great shooting, great playmaking at SG/SF and he is a very solid player.

Positives

-A phenomenal defender, laterally quick and extremely versatile, bothers scorers with his length and size, blocks and contests a lot of shots on the perimeter and in the paint, could be switchable 1-4 in the NBA, can guard the ball handler and the screener in the PnR, navigates screens well, good help defender, especially one pass away

-Pretty good driving to the rim when going right, in transition runs the floor well and finishes with poise, in the halfcourt uses his strides and size, eurosteps, mini-hooks and finger rolls

-A smart cutter and off-ball player in general, excelled at scoring off the catch going right and curls, this is one of the best ways to use him right now, sniffs out easy opportunities to score without the ball

-Has some upside to become a good 3 point shooter, 83% from the free throw line and had stretches where he looked excellent

-Capable playmaker in the pick and roll, plays with controlled pace, wraparounds and pocket passes were his most effective, finds the roller intriguingly well, can pass well on the move, has high IQ off the catch, makes the extra pass fast

Negatives

-Wasn't a good finisher overall, extremely right hand dominant in the paint and isn't very explosive, could limit his ceiling as a pick and roll ball handler

-Not a very comfortable player off the dribble, not good going left, average handle and just doesn't show much shot creating potential, settles for some runners and jumpers

-Still an inconsistent 3 point shooter, footwork can be a bit weird and could speed up his release a bit, dips the ball very low, if his on-ball development doesn't go far, being a solid 3 and D player should be the goal

-Seems a bit uncertain in a lot of areas, has some hesitation on his jumpers or runners, had some struggles with pressure and when picking up his dribbles, needs to be more aggressive and assertive

Likely range: 10-20

A younger sophomore solid 3&D player. Good at both swatting someone from their blind side or getting the steal. Can get open to his spots really well playing off the ball and is a deceivingly good shot creator. His shooting range is pretty deep and his form is good. Michigan is a very good team in a very good conference. Franz Wagner is deceivingly athletic, he has sneaky quickness that makes him likely legit. He could be Andrei Kirilenko or Luol Deng remixed. Franz Wagner is that legit of a defender and is a good team player. He is a good role player for any team. Franz Wagner, however has a ways to go for being an alpha on the offensive end. His terrible performance offensively against UCLA was a big time reason Michigan was eliminated that game. Everyone has a bad game here and there, but timing is everything in the tournament. His BIG 10 play was much better than his tournament play. His defense is what makes him the prospect he is. He guards about everyone on the court.

Franz might not be having the season that Kispert is having, but his possible NBA ceiling is probably just a skosh higher- he''s a little streakier, but he will probably do a little more for you as a rebounder and defender than Kispert- not to mention the fact that he seems to have a little bit of craftiness both as a dribbler and a post player. Additionally being a sophomore makes taking him and trusting in some level of development a little more reasonable.
