Not in love with his game but great defender with decent physical tools. Great shooting mechanics but not the greatest shooter. Nice downhill but question if it will translate. Some shades of Nesmith.

High End: Andrew Wiggins Low End: RJ Barrett lowlights Median outcome: Christian Braun/Nickeil Alexander-Walker Pros: Athleticism, aggressiveness, defense, shooting Cons: Polish (finishing + feel) Verdict: Aggressive energy bunny slasher in really limited minutes for Real Madrid, Hugo has an explosive first step that allows him to blowby any defenders in front of him. However, the main issue comes after this as he sometimes struggle to finish at the rim while also occasionally flubbing his passing reads. There's a lot of room for polish in his game, but that comes with experience which he is unable to get in his limited PT. Projects to be a really good 3&D off-ball player and might even be more with on-ball reps.

Gonzalez is a very good defender who has a high basketball IQ. He can score well at the rim. His jumper, if it can improve, will make him a for sure top 10 pick.

NBA Comp: RJ Barrett but better defensively.

Good defensively, great athlecisism and downhill attacker. Like Traore, he has great antics at the junior level. He doesn't get a lot of playing time with Real. I don't think he will be a star but a good role player in a rotation is absolutely possible.

NBA comparison : Aaron Nesmith/Mario Hezonja

Hugo struggled to get minutes on a really good Real Madrid team, which had made a lot of people forget about him.

In the 2023 FIBA U18 EuroBasket he averaged 14/7/2 as Spain finished second. 2024 FIBA U18 EuroBasket averaged 21/7/3 as Spain finished 13th.

His strength is his basketball IQ.

Gonzalez loves to get downhill and finish around the rim. Will use eurosteps and spins to get to his layup. Utilizes his speed well, very quick first step.

3 point shot looks nice enough, and has a high arch. Pretty slow to come out though, and doesn't look super confident. Must be set.

Strong and tough with a lot of competitive spirit. Attacks the boards and takes contact well when he is finishing.

Not a jump out of the gym athlete, but can generate some dunks here and there. Wide body and doesn't seem to get pushed around.

Gonzalez didn't go to the combine, which likely would have helped his draft stock.

Got a lot of blocks coming in from help, or by recovering on an offensive player that's blown by him. Will immediately recover when out of position and knows where to put himself. Maybe his arms are just crazy long.

Can find the open teammate and throw an outlet pass/lob, but throws a couple floaters/off the mark ones, and isn't throwing anything crazy.

Spain might be the best place to develop as a prospect. Obviously I won't base my ranking off of this, but he should be taught excellent fundamentals, quick decision making, and all the other stuff that makes solid basketball players solid.

Comp: Aaron Nesmith - shooting
