Upsides

• Super dynamic 3-point shooter, he is the best movement shooter in the class and excellent at pulling up threes off the catch or off the dribble (although he does the latter much less often)

• He is a better shot creator than people give him credit for, he has good footwork and can score from anywhere on the court

• Excellent motor, he is super competitive on both ends of the court

•Solid point of attack defender, he can comfortably handle guards, and even some wings when it’s needed

Downsides

• He really isn’t a good passer at this stage, he missed a lot of reads at Baylor and didn’t have great pass execution

• Handle need some work, he needs to learn to control his dribble more

Conclusion

will add scouting report soon

Best fits: Charlotte, Detroit, Orlando

Worst fits: Nowhere, he’d be a great fit on any NBA team

Shades of: Malik Monk, Desmond Bane, Kevin Huerter, Max Christie

Really good shooter, off the catch, off movement, off the dribble, this is his bankable skill and it gives him a great floor to begin with. He’s also a good defender, his wingspan is good and he tries hard and has good hands. His passing is a weakness of his but it’s not bad by any means, his main sell is his outstanding shooting and self creation shown at the future national champions Baylor

Ja’Kobe Walter - Baylor (SG - HT: 6’5” - WING: - WT: 190 - A: 18y)

- Good 3 level scorer on or off-ball
- Really efficient scorer. Great percentiles in P&R, transition, spot up, off screens. Not as ISO heavy, but that means he’ll fit in easily.
- Great jump shot, C&S 3s are immaculate
- Solid passer
- Very solid defense
- Good size at the 2
- Shades of Isaiah Joe, Malik Beasley

STRENGTHS:

  • One of the best and smoothest movement players in the class; from full sprint catch and shoot shots to off the dribble, side-step and step-back jumpers, he is a launcher from beyond the arc who knows how to set his defenders up with fakes to create space

  • Finishing potential is there, with his 6'10" wingspan, ability to use either hand at the rim and his ability to draw fouls (10 free throw attempts per game per 100 possessions)

  • Handled pressure on the perimeter very solidly; composed dribbler who is able to make the right read when needed

  • Stays connected to his man and keeps the defensive shell in tact; bumps offensive players off the line with his chest, which makes him an irritant on that end

WEAKNESSES:

  • Good physical tools, but not the greatest athlete; doesn't have an explosive first step, quick twitch and above the rim athleticism, or lateral quickness on both ends of the floor, which will limit him in 1v1 opportunities

  • His inside the arc game is not great; 42% on all two point shots, barely above 50% on finishes at the rim, 33% on mid-range jumpers, and his low release point does not make for a great total scoring arsenal

  • His size at 6'4" combined with his weaker athletic traits makes him not quite your typical wing but also not quite your typical guard

  • Not enough reps as a playmaker for me to be comfortable with him as a secondary playmaker for others

Summary: Ja'Kobe Walter had a ton of buzz surrounding his name as a potential lottery pick in this draft before the season started. His inefficient shooting numbers and lack of "wow" moments compared to players such as Clingan, Castle and Sheppard led to him falling down the board. By no means does it mean that he is a bad prospect who did not show good things at Baylor last season. He will have to develop an offensive game based around strength in order to create space due to his lack of explosive traits. He will also have to prove what position fits best due to height and athletic traits. His shot creation, smooth movements and ability to make the right zip pass gives him a solid enough floor. Before he begins to develop an isolation scoring game, he will have to be first placed as a shooter who has floppy actions designed for him.

Player Comparison: Shades of Norman Powell and Gary Trent Jr.
