RANK

Simms is a switchable big who can really protect the rim and defend. The dude still needs some polish on the offensive end, and may have limited upside, but the defensive potential is appealing. A solid rim runner who can operate out of pick and rolls and had a nice showing at the combine, doing everything that a teams wants a traditional big to do, getting on the boards and showing his defensive prominence.

Projected draft range: Second Round to undrafted

Height: 6'10 Wingspan 7'3

Offense:

  • Highly formidable in the dunker spot.

  • No wasted motion or timing. Springs in for finishes, usually lobs or strong vert dunks.

  • Really bad FT shooter 52%. A real downer is his game at the moment.

  • Easy to play with in transition, fills his lane and springs in for dunks.

  • Highly useful roll man.

  • Good awareness in traffic, will hesitate to get his dunk.

  • Good understanding of how to use his dribble and can find his way to the basket coupling it with his mobility.

  • Not just a power dunker, can counter the defense with spins and wrap throughs to get his finish.

  • Averages nearly 4 Offensive rebounds per 40 the past two seasons.

  • Energy and effort is a definite plus.

  • Can be a frustrating post up decision maker. Not an adept passer and can be targeted with pressure from a double for a turnover. Strong suspicion that one of his main drawbacks from early PT will be adjusting to pace of play. He may be out of his element for a bit.

  • Body control, patience and overall feel are not terrible, but a work in progress.

Defense:

  • A physical presence as a defensive anchor. Combines length, verticality, and excellent mobility for size.

  • Sound awareness and discipline. Will wait for his opportunity to block a shot or force the offensive player to try to go through him.

  • The mobility to certainly defend 3-5, can be asked to man a guard assignment at times.

  • Superb hip fluidity and lateral quickness. Highly switchable.

  • Very engaged closeouts that make jumpers much more difficult.

  • 44.5" max vertical leap

Swing Factors

  • Improving his FT% makes him even more desirable as a dunker spot rim protector.

  • Adjusting to the subtleties of timing on screens and when to attack will make him even more efficient.

  • Extending his range which may be too much to ask.

Role

  • A dunkers spot rim protector who can get out and fly in the open floor and create extra possessions with rebounding.

LOW

  • An end of the rotation or end of bench contributor as a moderately effective rim protector who moves well enough to provide versatility. A lob threat who is prone to turnovers and very poor free throw shooting.

HIGH

  • A starting center who thrives in the dunker spot and is a constant lob threat. A valuable PNR role player who is a threat trailing and can put the ball on the deck to get past other bigs for finishes. One of the better offensive rebounders in the league he is constantly creating extra possessions and averages double figures in the rebounding column. A huge weapon while protecting the rim with verticality, length, strength, mobility, awareness and overall shot blocking. Also a perimeter defensive weapon who can guard any wing or big and occasionally switch on to guards.
