Jett Howard: 6’8” 215 lbs 19.7 years old Freshman, Michigan 14.2 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 2 apg, 41.4% fg%, 36.8% 3%, 80% ft%

Overview: Jett Howard is a sharpshooting wing who can fill it up from stand still and on the move but he has significant defensive deficiencies. Howard started the year strong for the Wolverines garnering lottery buzz but struggled later in the year. Howard has the height and shooting abilities teams around the NBA covet, being able to launch the ball quickly and in a variety of ways, not just standstill shooting. Though Howard is big, he is slow footed and did not rebound or contribute “stocks” which has marred his draft stock.

Strengths: Big wing. Gorgeous and succinct jump shot. 40% from 3 unguarded. 38% off of the dribble. Can fly off screens and rain 3’s. Was able to score some in isolation. Positive assist to turnover ratio. Excellent shooter and dangerous player when in motion. Big upper body Good in dribble handoffs at scoring or drawing and dumping to roller.

Weaknesses: Slow feet on both O and D. Defensively gets lost too often. Poor finisher. Reliant on jump shots in isolation, hardly attacked rim in relatively unathletic league (BIG 10). 45% on layups.

Bio: Michigan, September 14, 2003 (19), 6’8”, 215 lb, Wing

Stats:

Strengths:

  • Shooting

  • Off ball cutting

  • Off ball defense

  • Finishing at the rim

Weaknesses:

  • Passing IQ

  • Could stand to tighten up handle

  • Doesn’t get to the line consistently

Rundown:

Jett Howard is an ideal wing prospect for the modern NBA. He is a natural off ball scorer that takes advantage of his sweet stroke and ability to make sharp cuts to the rim. His defense is about as solid as it comes. The biggest thing for him to work on is his passing. He has a tendency to make the wrong pass or make a lazy pass that ends in a turnover. Overall, the good heavily outweighs the bad, and all signs point to him being a productive NBA player.

He is a super low risk, SUPER HIGH REWARD type of prospect. He just works in pretty much any NBA lineup. Need a guy who doesn’t need the ball in his hands to be an impactful player on offense? Jett is one of the best off-ball movers in this draft class and has been incredible as a catch and shoot guy/movement shooter. Need a guy who can get you buckets with the ball in his hands but also plays well off the ball so your star player still has the ball the most? Jett fits that description perfectly as well. His handle is pretty dang good for a 6”8 dude and he has flashes a ton of self creation ability this year.

I think the highest end outcome for Jett on offense is he becomes an elite scorer at the next level, especially as a 3-point shooter, and can be the #1 option in a championship team. Or depending on his situation, a very very good #2 option. He can both play off the ball superbly each night and create his own shot at a high level, especially from deep. I really want to see him with the ball in his hands more so he can show the world just how dang good of a scorer he is.

He tends to get hated on for his defense, and there are some legitimate concerns for him in that area. He sometimes falls asleep and lets his assignment slip away from him, which can lead to an easy bucket for the other team. When Jett locks in though, he shows so much potential defensively. He moves well for a 6”8 guy and he can completely trap whatever player he is guarding to the point where they can’t even get in a decent position to receive a pass. If Jett can learn to be locked in at least 80-90% of the time instead of being locked in 40-50% of the time like he is now, he could be a great defensive player at the next level.

Jett Howard is just someone who is almost certainly going to work in the NBA no matter what. His skillset easily translates to the NBA right away, and he will helps his team no matter what situation they are in. This is what has made him a late lottery to mid first round pick in most peoples eyes, but I think his upside is heavily underrated.

If he can lock in more on defense and become the super high level creator that he can be while still be elite off the ball, I would not be surprised at all if he becomes an All-NBA player. His elite elite creation upside, elite off-ball offensive ability, and underrated defensive upside make for a low risk, high reward prospect that could make whoever drafts him look like geniuses based on where he is currently ranked in the consensus.

Now he does have some work to do in order to get to that point. I would like to see him finish around the rim more. Maybe it’s just the role that he is playing in at Michigan, but we don’t get to see him take shots around the rim nearly as much as we do get to see him take 3s. When he does get to the rim he can be a pretty good finisher though, so I do think that if he starts attacking the basket more he will be able to get more buckets around there and also up his free throw rate, which is quite low (though that is largely due to him being much more focused on shooting from deep rather than getting buckets around the basket). The defense also has to lock in more. If he isn’t able to lock in on defense more, than his upside is lowered a little bit. However, the world where he locks in completely on defense is the world where he makes All-NBA teams in his career, and that’s the world I wanna be In.

High end Outcome: Versatile #1 option on offense, good defensive player

Medium end Outcome: A good starter who impacts the game with his elite 3-point shooting ability and also with some creation. More of a #2-#3 option on a team, but still a big time bucket getter. The Defense doesn’t totally lock in though, and he becomes an average defensive player

Low end Outcome: A good rotation player who is a great scorer off the bench, especially as a 3-point shooter. The Defense never locks in at all though, which limits him from being a starter due to inconsistency on that end. Still a good player that any NBA team would want though.

Best team fits: Charlotte Hornets, Orlando Magic, Toronto Raptors

Jett has been flying up draft boards since the college season started and this is for good reason. He’s a lengthy 6’8” shooter that has shown the ability to cook with the ball in his hands. Many liked him as a talent in high school and going to play for his father at Michigan was a good sign when it comes to earning minutes, but due to a lower high school ranking, he wasn’t seen as a lottery-level talent. Immediately he’s been put in a position to be the lead creator at Michigan and he’s shined in that role. Jett was always a good shooter but not only has he looked really good, but he’s also shown the capability to produce with the ball in his hands. He is just an insane bucket-getter that really pops on the screen with his way of moving with immense length. He’s an amazing movement shooter that can knock down shots on and off of the ball. He’s been used as an off-ball cutter and shooter but has had many moments where he’s been put in the position to take over the game. He’s been a sniper from three but has been even better in the midrange. He’s great at finding space in the midrange for easy buckets. He loves to use floaters which come easy to him because of his superior length over shorter wings. Jett is really smooth when it comes to getting close to the basket. He has a way of getting long silky strides and has shown a high level of competence when it comes to getting into positions for tough lays, which he can certainly make. He has been critiqued for weaker athleticism but it’s been a little overblown as his length allows him to usually get the job done with ease. Jett had some injury issues with his ankles that he was dealing with toward the end of the season. His lack of burst down the stretch could be in part due to him playing through some pain. If he could add a little weight, he might be viewed in a more positive light as he would be pushed around less and have the ability to push around a little bit himself. He is a little slow-footed so adding some bulk would be useful. Right now he’s the lead handler which has given him ample opportunities to show off a solid playmaking game. He knows how to make the simple handoff, kick out, and bullet pass to create for his teammates. In the league, he probably isn’t a playmaker but it’s a nice skill to have in order to stake a spot in a team’s offensive system. I think Jett would be able to take his game to yet another level if he’s able to be paired with a real playmaker. Having a slick scorer of his caliber next to someone that knows how to get it to him would be deadly. Defensively he tries hard and has the length but he has so many mental lapses. His on-ball coverage isn’t bad but when it comes to reading the offensive movement when off of the ball, his defense can be really weak. He loses his man for a moment or two which is a common small mistake for a young player but if not improved upon, it can be detrimental. He needs to learn how to watch the overall offense instead of just the ball or his man. Jett needs to work on being more aware and stop getting beaten so much. He sometimes gets tricked up by his own feet and can be a little slow-footed when trying to move with his matchup. His defense is pretty far behind his offense and it’s clear he has less experience on that end, most likely due to weaker high school competition. It is interesting though to see the one-sided tunnel vision that honestly really only applies to his defense. I’m not too worried about his defensive ability moving forward due to his size and shown capability to pick up on skills and adapt. It’s usually safer to bet on players that display a work ethic and possess an upward trajectory. Jett has only gotten better and better over time and I’m counting on him to continue to improve at the next level. Having his dad as a former NBA player and college head coach to advise him has clearly been helpful so far and it will most likely be handy in the future too when it comes to navigating his development going forward. His upside as a shooter and offensive weapon with his lanky frame is very enticing. I wouldn’t put it past him to keep progressing as a ball handler and creator and become a true star in the league. He has all the qualities and intangibles to succeed in the NBA.

OFFENSE Projects as a good 3&D player as a floor Good shooter from 3 showed flashes of being capable off movement Made Some good cuts and knows how to move and relocate off ball Some flashes with the ball in his hands Capable of hitting stepbacks Might hint at higher ceiling but too early to say Has some potential with the ball in his hands but not used a lot Michigan's coaching staff a good job of getting him the ball on the move in these dribble hand off sets, allowing him to get downhill before he touches the ball. Not a super explosive athlete, but getting moving ahead of time helps him get paint touches. good decision-making (six turnovers all season) (8/12) Needs to improve his footwork on drives esp cause first step not great More than just a stationary shooter, He's most effective off the ball using movement to create opportunities, but we have seen FLASHED of self-creation off the bounce with his ball-handling into tough dribble jumpers and runners TAKING 10 3S A GAME WITH 40% GOOD OFF SCREENS , OFF MOVEMENT ALL SHOOTING COMBOS rarely bothered by contests because of his high release point CREATIVE AND GOOD SHOOTER OTD, NOT GREAT HANDLE most of the time dribbles behind his back , not many moves Few of his self created shots at the rim GOOD AT ALSO USING PINDOWNS AND SCREENS TO GET TO THE RIM AND FINISH WELL THERE HAS SHOWN GOOD PLAYMAKING, CONNECTOR MAKES GOOD READS off Pindowns and OTD too , TOOK GOOD CARE OF BALL

DEFENSE Good on ball can move laterally well even if Not the strongest But shines oin a chaser role finding his man off screens Really good at sliding with defenders on the perimeter He's looked fairly apathetic at times this season, especially off the ball, where he tends to lose his focus and fall asleep, giving up too many easy baskets due to late reactions and poor technique GOOD SHOT BLOCKER FOR HIS SIZE, COMPETES NOT LOCKDOWN BUT GOOD DEFENDER, GOOD LATERAL MOVEMENT NEED TO STAY MORE ALERT ON DEFENSE

Jett Howard is an elite 3 point shooter and overall scorer. He’s a very good floor spacer who is also pretty good off ball. He’s got a solid frame and can play SG as well as SF. Isn’t a crazy athlete but has some bounce. He’s very smart and has high basketball IQ. He’s one of the best at the catch and shoot in college basketball. He’s a very good shot creator. He may go down as the top shooter in the class, up there with a few other guys like Keyonte and Gradey. His playmaking has improved and he limits turnovers. He can improve on defense but he’s solid. He’s got good drive and is a fiery competitor, showing up in bigger games.

Jett Howard- Michigan (SF) Age:19.8yrs 6’8 215 (Bogdon Bogdanovic)

Howard is an excellent 3 point shooter even better than his 36.8% suggests from this past season. He is more effective while coming off screens and catch and shoot.than off the dribble shooting. Despite his excellent length at sg/sf he is not a good defender as he is not smooth laterally and needs to improve his overall defense.

Has a little bit of old Carmelo Anthony game. Great perimeter shooter, relocation + movement shooter. Good straight-line speed for size. Decent finisher. Must improve ball handling and decision-making. Defense is below average. Needs to improve ability to stay in front of players, but does hustle enough to get by. Could improve weak side IQ and overall rebounding. Plus potential as an offensive threat due to mix of shooting, size, and speed. Very good passer and has secondary playmaking potential due to his shooting gravity.
