Big Board Rankings

Strengths

  • Youngest prospect in the draft, not turning 19 until late December. Younger than most of the high school seniors projected as one-and-done candidates in the 2022 NBA draft. Has good size and length with a projectable frame that will likely be very impressive in time.

Areas to Improve

  • Lacks strength and experience defensively. Gets beat off the dribble more than you'd hope. Can't always get over screens.

A dude I should for sure move up, but it’s tricky. He’s super young and still pretty raw, but the flashes of defensive and offensive awareness is so tantalizing. He’s an 18 year old slashing guard, who needs to put on weight but has a buttery shot and pretty solid off ball awareness. I would advocate staying in school another year but he’s should get drafted this year as well, watch for him to rise when I study him some more

Joshua Primo should be a nice 3&D swingman in the NBA. The 6-6 sharpshooter was overshadowed by teammates such as Herbert Jones and John Petty Jr. in college, but he shot 39 percent from three and was pretty good defensively. Like a lot of these Alabama players, he has the ability to lock down multiple positions. Primo is basically the youngest prospect in this class, and it will be exciting to see how he develops into more than a lanky 3&D guy with a smooth shooting stroke.

Projected draft range: 25-40

Height 6'5 Weight 190 lbs Wingspan 6'9 DOB Dec 24, 2002 (18 years old) Pre-Draft Team Alabama (Fr)

Offense

  • Top 7% in nation Spotting Up - Instant C&S threat

  • Beautiful fluid stroke, but there is a bit of a dip.

  • Very good rhythm and bounce in shot, should be a great shooter in any C&S scenario and from deep range.

  • Impeccable at being ready for the shot.

  • Nails from the corners.

  • Looks like off-dribble shooting will continue to become a part of his game.

  • Smooth finisher and crafty at the cup, but finishes too low.

  • Avoids contact like the plague - 2.6 FTA per 40.

  • Burst and first step are a concern right now.

  • Overly right handed.

  • Needs to work on varying his game when driving/attacking. Too much right, too much scoop, too much euro. Can be predictable.

  • Good in transition

  • Not great athleticism, but only 18, there could be a little bit more developing burst.

Defense

  • Engaged defender with good instincts and foot speed.

  • Plus wingspan for recovery skills.

  • Adding weight/strength will be vital to him not being pushed around.

  • May not be a plus defender off jump, but the tools are there for solid potential.

Swing Factors

  • Physicality - Only 18, but at times his shying of contact, lack of burst, predictable finishing patterns can be very frustrating. Won't be 19 until Xmas eve so reason to believe this is temporary, but his stock would be way up on news that he's a little bit faster, aggressive, stronger and less right handed.

  • Separation - As a C&S guy there is no doubt Primo should be deadly, the next phase of an expanded scoring role will come in the way of off-dribble shooting. If he can begin to show signs of creating space and nailing jumpers at multiple levels all of the sudden we are talking about one of the more intriguing jump shooters in the league.

Role

  • A C&S marksman with potential to be more, and the defensive upside and youth worth investing in.

  • LOW: Primo remains soft on the attack, he lacks the burst to attack or create space on off-dribble jumpers. Defensively he struggles with physicality and he can't quite always hang with NBA burst. He is a valuable C&S asset however and remains at the end of a rotation for marksman abilities.

  • HIGH: Primo fills out and matures physically. He starts to use his length and stops shying away from contact on the drive, diversifying how he finishes. He does well in transition, is a knockdown C&S guy and starts exploring off-dribble shooting with promising potential creating separation. Defensively Primo maximizes his length, works his tail off and is a very good defender against guards and smaller wings. Primo quickly gets into a sixth man role and eventually tasks a starting job with a shot at a couple all star games.

Primo has a ton of potential, although he is too raw. He has potential both sides of the floor, he needs to go to a team who can help him with being better.

Draft range: 28-50

Depends if teams will want to take the chance with him or not

Positives

-Good shooter off the catch, consistent release, seemed pretty automatic at times, this is his calling card early

-Solid team defender that showed upside defending backcourt players pretty well due to his length

-Limited on-ball chops but showed some nice craftiness to get to the rim or handle it in the pick and roll, showed some real potential in HS here

Negatives

-His role at Alabama did not allow him to do much with the ball in his hands, some extremely limited flashes and what we have in HS is the only proof of him being a potential creator

-Didn't see much passing from him, again can be written off to role but he didn't have great vision

-Still pretty physically weak so he can struggle on-ball when guys get into his chest, expected for one of the youngest prospects in the draft

Likely range: 20-40

High energy Sharpshooter who is team player that does whatever it takes to win.

PLUSES

Good shooter off the catch with a high release and deep range. He also has the ability to hit shots on the move using handoffs and screens.

Shooting threat off the bounce using one or two dribbles to create room for his jump shot.

Intelligent offensive player with a feel for when to cut and how to relocate off the ball.

Active on-ball defender with great fundamentals and length who defends with his feet and not his arms, sliding laterally to mirror opponents and rarely committing careless fouls.

Hard-nosed player who fights at every opportunity, whether it be after a switch against a bigger player or in an off-ball situation when he must help in the paint then hustle back to his man.

MINUSES Lacks the type of ball-on-a-string handle and explosive first step found in players with go-to scoring upside. He projects more as a complementary player.

Below-the-rim athlete who struggles to finish around the hoop. He displays touch on crafty right-handed layups but avoids contact and lacks a reliable left hand.

Negative assist-to-turnover ratio due to his tendency to make risky passes and his lack of a strong handle.

Player Comp= Carris LeVert, Anfernee Simmons

Even though he has a strange release on his jumper, Primo is one of the best shooters in this class. He has decent size and athleticism to guard in the NBA. I see him as a Gary Trent Jr. type of player where he can defend his position and really shoot the ball and space the court.
