START OF TIER 15

A really great, tough, college point guard. I really have trouble getting on board with short point guards. You have to be so elite at your job to make up for the extra 2-3 inches you are giving up. Perhaps Wright is though. His pick and roll playing is superb, as well as his point of attack defense. His shot needs a lot of work, and he’s not an explosive athlete which is really amplified in his small frame. However, I could see him run a back up point guard spot.

Another small guard who can't shoot the three in McKinley. While he is reluctant to take threes, he really did do a lot at a high level at Duke. Similar to Jose Alvarado, he's a pretty good defender despite being 6 feet and has a solid frame. He can get to the rim and facilitate for teammates, and shows some ability to score even if defenses sag off of him. Also shows at least some potential to eventually become a knockdown shooter, with an encouraging 84 percent free throw clip and has averaged 3 three point attempts per game throughout his four year career. Another one of these senior guards with limited upside in Wright IV.

Projected draft range: 50-undrafted

Offense

  • Very good athletically. Good vertical, quick.

  • Excellent PNR player. Per 40 7 AST to just 2.6 TO.

  • Very good passer in a variety of different ways. A formidable initiator off dribble and impressive passing accuracy.

  • Phenomenal floater, dropped bigs are in for trouble.

  • Comfortable doing what he needs to going left or right.

  • Not much usage in the way of C&S, ball dominant guard to this point.

  • Perimeter shooting lacking consistency, and far from a quick release.

  • Can attack to hard, could use some more finesse and deceleration tactics.

Defense

  • Quick high intensity defender who beats men to their spots and remains engaged until the end of the play.

  • Undersized

Swing Factors

  • Consistent perimeter shooting

  • C&S consistency

  • Finding ways to get to the free throw line more often

Role

  • A ball dominant initiator who can score on the attack when called upon.

LOW

  • His lack of size and perimeter shooting proves to be too much for him in the NBA and he takes his career overseas where he can freely utilize his ball dominant skills to exploit sagging defenses.

HIGH

  • Wright IV thrives as a 6th man high usage guard who finds more consistency shooting from the perimeter and keeping defenses honest while he penetrates, scores and facilitates with a bevy of tools in his bag inside 15 ft. Defensively he is a nagging on ball defender who limits how often he is exploited for his lack of length.

McKinley Wright IV is a senior and a PG at that. It will be a challenge for him to make the league, however he is legit. He has lead Colorado to some quality wins in the always underrated PAC 12 and is a threat to any team he plays.
