This dude can shoot the rock, and that makes me think that he will rise a bit. Most of his shot are fairly open and he doesn’t have a lot of movement, which limits him, but he’s still super solid. At a 6’9 shooting guard, he will have instant matchup advantages on both ends of the ball. His defense needs work, he isn’t super athletic, and he needs to put on weight, but he has the skill.

Comparison: Jason Kapono

Ceiling: Ryan Anderson with defense, fluidity

Floor: Marco Belinelli -

Trey Murphy III might receive sleeper interest. Yes, he took limited shots but he had a 50-40-90 season at Virginia, showing some great touch for a 6-9 wing. He''s limited creating, but he should serve as a spot up shooter to stars and a guy who can defend three positions. He helped his stock considerably at the NBA combine, and his length as a 6-9 swingman was evident as shorter guards and even forwards were powerless to block his shots.

Projected draft range: 35-50

Height 6'9 Wingspan 7'0

Offense:

  • Elite C&S prospect from day one. Picture perfect mechanics; high and quick transfer to release.

  • Should be a corner specialist.

  • Sound C&S relocation footwork.

  • Standing vertical leap 34" & Max Vertical leap 38". A high flyer in transition.

  • Intelligent backdoor cutter

  • Not nearly as comfortable creating for himself as he is in C&S. Struggles to create space.

  • Not comfortable finessing in traffic, not much of any bag in close.

  • Never more than 1.6 AST per 40 in three college seasons and not a ball handler.

Defense

  • Sound hip movement, good lateral strides. Forces a lot of pull up jumpers and uses his plus length to close out and effect shots.

  • Able to guard multiple positions due to combination of length and mobility.

  • Maintains inside position on PNR and gets through screens successfully.

  • Intuitively keeps himself between the ball and basket.

  • One of the best at closing out in the class.

  • Not much of a rebounder.

Swing Factors

  • Decent first step. May be able to attack better than showcased in system oriented school and spacing deficient college environment?

  • Not fully utilized Catch & Finish, lob threat abilities?

Role

  • 3 & D sharpshooter who thrives in the open floor with flashes of special spring.

  • LOW: 3pt Specialist and competent team defender near the end of a rotation

  • HIGH: Starter who locks down defensively and is a truly premiere C&S marksman. Showcases high IQ on both sides of the floor as well as athleticism through a combination of verticality and length.

Tier 6 Floor - low-end rotation player Bullseye - rotation player Ceiling - starter

Trey Murphy is a 6'9 High IQ 3 and D wing who shot over 42% at Virginia last season. Murphy was the only 50-40-90 guys in all of college basketball this season. However Murphy is very low volume and generates no shot creation at all.

Positives

-Really nice athlete, 6'9 with a 7 foot wingspan, has some real vertical bounce leading to eye popping dunks, won't have trouble translating to the NBA in this category

-Very good on-ball defender, moves well laterally, can potentially guard 1-4, closes out and recovers well, like his footwork, uses his length to swallow up offensive players, has real lockdown potential, can guard the PnR both guarding the screener and ball handler, off-ball showed nice upside making the rotations, getting deflections, etc.

-Real spot-up 3 point shooting threat (43% on 5 attempts per game overall/92% from the line), really good from the corners, good balance, consistent and fast release with a high release point, showed flashes of shooting as the pop man in the PnP

-Showed nice flashes as a fluid offense piece, was one of the best cutters in the country in the UVA offense, excellent at recognizing overplays, also has potential to attack closeouts and finish off the dribble, limited here but could become more than just 3 and D, pretty good and underrated finisher, even in the half court

Negatives

-Probably not going to be a self-creator, doesn't have the type of burst or handle to become that, also not a good shooter off the dribble, his form is a bit more inconsistent here though he showed SOME upside, also should work on becoming a better movement shooter to diversify his off-ball role

-Should be a bit more focused off-ball defensively, a bit more effort tagging the roller or chasing shooters around screens, overall good in this area, also bit of a weak rebounder, likely not gonna be able to play the 4 if this doesn't improve

-Needs to work on making the right decision when in the lane, big for when he gets chased off the line in the NBA

Likely range: 14-20

Will definitely carve out a role in the NBA. Elite in the catch-and-shoot and can attack the rim off of cuts.

Stars in his role as a tall knockdown shooter and versatile defender.

PLUSES

Elite shooter with a quick release who can catch fire from 3. He has a strong feel for when to get open for a jumper and when to cut to the rim.

Has the potential to be an elite screener due to his size and his ability to both pop out for 3s and roll to the rim to finish with athleticism.

Reliable passer who keeps the ball moving. He makes quick decisions, executes simple plays, and can make accurate passes off the dribble.

Excellent defensive fundamentals, awareness, quickness, and length give him significant potential on that end. He stays in his stance man-to-man, and he fights through screens and handoffs like a veteran.

Versatile on-ball defender who could be utilized as an on-ball stopper in certain matchups. He can also switch screens and stay in front of smaller players.

Sentry off-ball defender who racks up deflections, picks off passes, and makes timely rotations.

Displays good habits boxing out when he’s near the rim, though his role was to sprint out on offense rather than crash the boards.

MINUSES

Elementary ball handler at this stage of his career who lacks the dribbling skills to create his own shot or get to the rim.

Unproven shooter off the dribble. He lacked opportunities at Virginia but also didn’t look comfortable when he did take jumpers off the bounce.

He can still improve as a shooter coming off movement. Mastering this skill would make him a major weapon as a perimeter scorer.

He’ll need to get stronger and become a better rebounder to be an effective small-ball center.

Player comp= OG Anunoby, De’Andre Hunter, Cam Johnson, Robert Covington, Mikal Bridges
