Following in the foot steps of the Admiral and Tim Duncan, Victor Wemanyama is, without a shadow of doubt, going to be the first pick in this year’s draft. San Antonio will have a new foundational piece to build around moving forward, and despite how annoyed many fans were to see San Antonio launched back to relevance in a split second, I think we can all agree that Pop and Co. are the perfect stewards to Wemby’s future. The Spurs have not been particularly competitive the last few years but that has allowed them to develop some really nice young pieces showcased by Devin Vassell and Keldon Johnson as well as the rookie reincarnation of Dennis Rodman, Jeremy Sochan. CP3 had been linked heavily to the Spurs but after the Bradley Beal trade yesterday, that is probably off the table now unless a buyout is reached. It will be interesting to see if San Antonio gets aggressive in free agency or the trade market now: giving us a hint on if they think year one is already time to pivot towards win now. Wemby is an offensive enigma, doing literally everything on the court at a ridiculous 7’4. Defensively he is very agile and blocks everything in reach, all 8 feet of reach. He will need to add strength to be able to bang down low but, his versatility and size is one-of-one and the Spurs are over the moon to be bringing him in.
