People love to overuse the terms “star” and “superstar” when talking about players across the league. Right now I think there are only 7 real “superstars in the league”.

In my opinion, there are a couple of things required to be a “superstar”.

1. You are so impactful on the court that it changes the way the game is played when you are playing.

2. You have to be one of the most elite scorers in the league while also being an above average defender for your position (at bare minimum).

3. You have to be extremely consistent, whether that be your health or your performance on the court. Yes, people are allowed to have bad games, but you shouldn’t be praying on a night-to-night basis that your “superstar” performs well.

4. You have to be a leader on your team. If you’re a “superstar”, you should be able to elevate your teammates while also playing good yourself. You should raise the floor of everyone on the court with you and be able to get your team involved.

5. You have to be a winner, specifically in the postseason. You can’t be a “superstar if your team is .500. You should be able to get your team wins, especially in the playoffs.

Current superstars in the league: Giannis, Jokic, Shai, Wembanyama, and Steph. Even though guys like KD and Bron are still great, I would differentiate a superstar from a star as a player who makes any team a contender by virtue of being on the team, with exceptions to Wemby. The aforementioned older guys were superstars and I think LeBron could make a championship run this year but hes only a part of the Lakers success. For me, guys on the fringe of superstardom are players like Brunson, Ant, Tatum, Bron, and Donovan Mitchell. I dont think Anthony Davis or Embiid can be in the conversations when they can't stay on the court. Big fan of all these guys though.
