I believe the Wolves made a mistake in trading Towns instead of Gobert. Look no further than Game 2 of the Wolves-Nuggets playoff series. Arguably the best single game of defense in past 10 years and Towns played a huge role in that. Played a huge role defensively in the entire series and the playoffs when he could stay in the game. KAT is also the ideal pick n roll partner for Ant and that will be a critical element missing from the Wolves offense.
Randle is a clunky fit schematically for the Wolves. If the Wolves had moved Towns back to center and promoted Reid to the 4, the Wolves could run a 5 out offense while staying borderline elite defensively. Reid is ready to start and instantly becomes a reliable 3rd scoring option.
Gobert is too much of a liability on offense and got exposed in the Mavs series. He's not the answer going forward. However, he's a good fit for the Spurs as they rebuild. He'll bring great defense alongside Wemby and some mentorship for the young frenchman. Their interior D will also be scary. Whether they play them at the same time or bring Gobert off the bench, lookout for the Spurs. In this trade, the Wolves would get back a couple veterans and a 1st round pick or 2 to bolster the bench and restock some assets. The bet is on a starting 5 of Conley, Ant, Jaden, Naz, and KAT to move the team forward. At the least the future feels a little brighter. All the while, guys like Dillingham and Shannon hopefully develop quick and become important contributors.
I understand the thinking by trading KAT to free up cap space for the future. In this proposed trade, they accomplish the same purpose. I don't believe KAT was the right player to trade, even with all his faults. I hope I'm wrong. He's very well the next elite MN big to be traded and then win a championship for another team.
