Strengths

  • Nice size and length for a scoring guard at 6-5. Good, shifty open-court athlete. Plays above the rim with relative ease. Has the feet and length to be a plus defender in time, especially against point guards. Good positional rebounder. Shows you glimpses defensively.

Areas to Improve

  • Had a tendency to fade in and out of games in the past, on both ends of the floor. Jump shot is on the streaky side. Defensive impact fluctuates.

If you want a bucket, call up Bouknight. He has a way of putting the ball in the hoop that is almost unmatched in the class. He shifts his body in such odd ways and doesn''t play very fluid but it ends up working. I think he will -probably- be an elite sixth man but the potential for more is very enticing. His offball game is also surprisingly great. An all around offensive talent that will GET YOU BUCKETS.

Despite an atrocious NCAA tournament, James Bouknight seems to have all the shot creating and three-level scoring to be an instant contributor. His 29.7 percent three point clip doesn''t impress you, but he normally took deep shots. He needs to add to his frame to be an average defender, at best, and isn''t the best passer, but his scoring and rebounding ability (over 5 per game) is appealing. Also can become a Jordan Clarkson type, and is arguably one of the best pure scorers in this class. His scoring off the dribble is just too much to deny, and he has improved his foot speed and defensive ability in draft workouts.

In the last six weeks, he came in here with a tremendous amount of dedication and discipline. He'd show up 10 minutes early to the workouts, always asking me if there was more we can do but the biggest improvement I've seen is his athletic ability, his explosiveness, and his strength.

6''5 with 6''9 wingspan. Great leaper, and a lob threat. Shifty off the dribble with burst. A scorer mentality, with a decent shooting stroke that should play at the next level. He has the ability to create. Shoots fairly well coming off ball and off his own dribble. His best asset offensively is most likely his attacking and creativity getting to the hoop. Combines athleticism with shifty combo dribble moves to find the bucket. A potential 3-level scorer. Nice touch and finishing to cap off plays. Nice in air balance, strength and coordination. Pull up game looks convincing. 47% on jumpers inside 17 ft as a freshman. Great attacker in transition with speed and athleticism. Very hard to stop with a head a of steam. Good passing vision when looking, but can get caught up in tunnel vision and pressuring defenders. Nice laterally in defense and very good hands. STLs are up to 2.7 per 40 this year. Like his offensive vision, defensively he can get tunneled in on gambling which won''t fly at the next level.

Comparisons: Derrick White, DeAnthony Melton

I can''t believe Bouknight''s stock dropped tremendously and I am fucking pissed off. He is a hell of a player and a hell of a passer. He remindes me of Derrick White by his finishing. I pissed his stock dropped. He was supposed to go top ten and now he is top 20. Hell no

James Bouknight can SCORE, and he has some potential rebounding, but he needs to be more efficient and be a better defender.

Draft range: 14-22

He needs a better all around game, right now he is basically a scorer.

Floor: Idk, could be a Jabri Oarker like player but now after his injuries

Positives

-An explosive athlete, can jump off 1 or 2, highlight dunker and a lob threat in space, has burst in tight spaces

-Shot creation is his main selling point, can get to his spot and create space by changing speeds and with a series of between-the-legs dribbles, spinmoves, stepbacks... Great 3 level shot making potential, a natural scorer that will take and make tough shots from anywhere on the court, hesitating and faking the defender out to drive inside was one of his favorites

-3 point shot wasn''t great at UConn but shot a good percentage at the line, his mechanics are solid and he doesn''t lack confidence, 3s off the dribble were the most encouraging

-A very crafty finisher at the rim, has good body control and is pretty strong, routinely finished through contact and over length, solid foul drawing ability when he gets into the paint, was at his best as a scorer when he made it a point to get to the rim, floater game as a counter was solid

-Some nice off-ball potential, was pretty efficient off of curls and pindowns, extremely high percentages as a cutter though he didn''t get a chance to do it much

-Has good upside on defense, very good lateral movement when locked in, has the length to potentially guard 1-3, fought in the post with his strong frame, had nice flashes of team defense

-Raw playmaking upside, a lot of work to be done on it but he showed capable PnR play in stretches

Negatives

-Needs to tighten up his handles if he wants to reach his shot creating potential, looked a bit uncomfortable getting trapped or doubled, needs to force it on offense less

-Shot selection is a big swing factor for him, took a bit too many contested mid range jumpers off the dribble and has to be a bit more willing to pass out of a 1v1 situation, sometimes settles for jumpers a tad too much

-A pretty inconsistent 3 point shooter, shot very bad on catch and shoot 3''s and this will be very important early in his career, you definitely bet on this improving however

-Has to improve as a PnR passer and decision maker in general, had far too many unnecessary turnovers and passes that were off target

-Effort on defense needs to improve, mostly not getting stuck on screens and being more aware off-ball, ball-watching was an issue

Likely range: 8-20

Smart player who plays within the game and can hit a big shot or make a good decision with the ball. Injury may have took just a slight hit to his stock, but should not be very much. Bouknight is one of the better players and scorers of this draft class. He did go off for 40 earlier in the year. UConn did not quite gel once he came back from injury. They were an early exit in the big dance, while the Bouknight off shooting day did not help the cause there. Nonetheless he is a stud scorer.
