Jordan Hawkins: 6’5.25” 186 lbs 6’6.75” wingspan 21.1 years old Sophomore, UCONN 16.2 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 1.3 apg, 40.9% fg%, 38.8% 3%, 88.7% ft%

Overview: Jordan Hawkins is the best shooter in the class in my opinion. He is a sharpshooter who couples nice athleticism with a quick trigger and unwavering confidence to become a very good movement shooter. He possesses a wiry but athletic frame and indicates he cares on defense. His value will be on the offensive side of the ball where his movement shooting is extremely rare and commands tons of attention from the opposition thus making him an asset. The question becomes for Hawkins, what else does he do at an NBA level that makes him a true asset to have on your team and draft with a high selection? He does not project to be a net positive on the basketball court if his shot is not falling but shooting is a key piece in today’s game so I could see his name getting called early by a team with good foundations who are in need of dynamic shooting.

Strengths: Best shooter in the class. Very quick release. Shoots it exceptionally well on the move. Great free throw shooter. 44% on guarded catch and shoot 3’s. 41% on catch and shoots. Runs in transition and spaces floor then too. Upside as someone who can make shots for himself. Has shown capacity to attack closeouts and go to the rim. Hardly holds the ball and always runs.

Weaknesses: Very thin. Must get stronger to defend. Does not get assists even with his gravity as a shooter. Played on a very good defensive team but was hidden at times on that end. Even in college, he hardly impacted games when he was missing 3’s. Does not have much promise as a secondary ball handler. Not big for a true 2 guard.

Bio: UConn, April 29, 2002 (21), 6’4.25”, 186 lb, Shooting Guard

Stats:

Strengths:

  • Shooting

  • Off ball movement

  • Super quick release

  • Solid handles

Weaknesses:

  • Not the most explosive athlete

  • Doesn’t get downhill much

  • Doesn’t have much playmaking

  • Not a crazy defender

Rundown:

Two names that immediately come to mind when thinking about this guy are Jordan Poole and Max Strus. He fits the archetype of a fiery shooter from beyond the arc who runs around like crazy to get open. His release was the quickest in college last year and he never looked lost out on the court. He’s not the most efficient inside the arc and he isn’t insane at defense, but he knows who he is and plays a potentially valuable role.

Jordan Hawkins is the most prolific shooter in the draft. He’s really broken out for U-Conn as their main offensive threat and best draft prospect. He’s got a lightning-quick release that you just cannot leave open or give any space no matter what. He’s always moving and as soon as you give him any room it’s too late and the shot is already up. If you let him step into an attempt it’s simply just lights out. It’s flying out as soon as he’s able to get his arms up. He’s the type of scorer that isn’t super set and he can move around super fluidly to create a look from anywhere. He has a real range that extends out occasionally to the logo. Although he can work in the id range, his bread and butter really come from three. He likes to pull up into shots and it really doesn’t matter how far from the basket he is. He holds such gravity as soon as he steps on the floor and just commands a defense. He has a bit of a sloppy but tight dribble that could cause turnovers in the pros due to higher-pressure coverage, but this isn't something I'm stressing over because he has dealt with a lot of targeting from defenses already. He isn’t a great ball handler that can control the flow of an offense by initiating for others. He is a willing passer but not a real distributor. He’s smart when it comes to recognizing when a teammate has a better shot. Although he isn’t ultra-selfish, he’s good for kicking the ball out but not for much else. He isn’t quite shifty enough to be a point guard or a guy that brings the ball up the court. His role at the next level will be as an absolute flamethrower. Although he can create for himself, he can sometimes dribble into nowhere and get into a difficult situation. He has been a bit streaky in terms of splits throughout his collegiate career. Jordan only shot 33.3% from three as a freshman and has had cold spurts at times this year, but he’s been tearing it up as of late. He was on fire to end his regular season and when watching you can only imagine how he could cook with less pressure on him. Right now he’s stuck to like glue by opponents that never relent. If put in a more off-ball role where he isn’t the primary option, he could be given more offensive freedom despite most likely less shot opportunity. Jordan is underrated as a finisher due to his label as a shooter. He can get up over people whenever he needs to despite being relatively thin. I would like to see him add some depth to his skillset around the rim such as a floater or some more finishes. His athleticism allows him to be pretty effective in transition. He isn’t a great on-ball defender but manages to dive for plays so that he creates fast break opportunities. He is always hustling to get the ball back and effort on defense will never be an issue for him. There is room for growth, but he’s an aware off-ball defender. He makes rotations and switches within the scheme well. It’s clear that he tries to prove his worth as a defender to keep himself on the court which is a big positive. Teams can never have enough shooting talent on their team so he could see himself as a big riser before draft night. He lit the NCAA tournament up in March as a deadly option on the perimeter. Hawkins was crucial to UConn being national champions and I could see him playing a similar impactful role for a winning team at the next level. Players like this have been really sought after the past few years and Hawkins has a high floor plus a real ceiling to him. There’s a world where he’s a big-time bucket getter that steps up to the next level by improving his ball handling and other scoring instincts. If a team is patient with him and is fine with just having him as a microwave shooter for now, then they could end up with something really big. He isn’t anything close to a risky bet and investing in him to be something more could really unleash an offensive monster.

Jordan Hawkins is one of the better shooters in the class. His mechanics are great and he's consistent from behind the arc. He doesn't let misses get to his head and has a good mentality. He's great in transition and playing off ball. He has a deep, deep bag. He is one of the best movement scorers that we've seen in years. He has improved his driving and is a great FT shooter. He is a solid defender and rebounder and has high upside in those areas. His size might make it tough for him to hold his own against stronger guards. His footwork and stamina are great. His ball handling has shown flashes but isn't consistent. His finishing is a WIP as is his playmaking.

More athletic Seth Curry. An easy comparison is Ray Allen. Marksman movement shooter who can create separation from his defender in any action either off-ball through back-cuts or screens, or off the dribble on step-backs or quick blow-byes when the defender locks and trails at the three-point line. High IQ offensive player who reads what the defense is giving him and resets the offense if needed. Will fit in any offense at the next level due to his prolific shooting ability. Heady defender who stays in front of quick ball handlers and uses his athleticism to contest at the rim. Good off-ball defender who can use his reach to make deflections. Decent rebounder for a 6'5" guard. Moving up draft boards due to an insane tournament run. Worthy lottery prospect.

Jordan Hawkins- UConn (SG) Age: 21.1yrs 6”5 195 (KCP)

Hawkins is one of the best shooters in this year's class both catch and shoot and coming off screens. He has some explosiveness when he gets to the rim but lacks some self creation and creation for others. He has the quickness on defense to be a good perimeter defender in the future if he puts on some muscle and this will also help his offensive game when driving and around the rim.

The best player in this year's tournament. Jordan Hawkins was electric all season. He is more of a combo guard than a true point guard, and his offensive skillset is so fun. He is (pretty easily) the best shooter in this draft, in my opinion. His NCAA Tournament run was superb, shooting 50% on 42 (!!!) attempts through six games. Excellent shot mechanics and excellent strength, and I think that is an underrated skill for the great shooters. For a player who commanded a lot of attention, coming off of pin-downs, running around all the time, to be able to continue to shoot through the fatigue was super impressive to me. I also thought that, even though he did not shoot a high volume of mid-range shots, I really liked his ability to shoot at the elbows. Whichever team he goes to, that will be his most attractive skill and he will be excellent in that role. I do not see much ability as a playmaker for others; I also do not think that he will be tasked with that role. His ball-handling was better than I expected. His efficiency around the basket, while not great, I think that his impact as a dribble penetrator could be tapped into more. His averages on the defensive end, in terms of blocks and steals per game, marginally improved, which is fine. He has great instincts and is always on edge, on and off the ball. I believe in his fundamentals and footwork a lot to think he could be a good defender at his best. I think that his size will be a sticking point on the defensive end, being an undersized two at 6'5", 195 pounds. He definitely needs to add to his frame, but I do not think he will be a bad defender; I think he'd be a neutral defender at worst. His skills are the most translatable in this draft, being as elite of a shooter as he is. Some of his weak points may limit the ceiling he has, but if his shooting translates the way we think it will, pencil him in as a late lottery selection.

  • Player Comparison: Shades of Malik Beasley and Jason Terry

  • Projected Draft Position: Late Lottery/Mid-First Round Pick

  • Best Fits: Atlanta Hawks, New Orleans Pelicans, Golden State Warriors
