Big Board Rankings

Strengths

  • One of the best athletes in college basketball. Powerful first step in the open court. Explosive accelerating from a standstill and getting off his feet for dunks and blocks. Frame is at an early stage of development but should fill out in time.

Areas to Improve

  • At an early stage of development offensively. Lacks experience and polish in the half court. Ballhandling, decision-making are a work in progress.

This pick is much more potential based than most of mine. He has all the tools to be a multiple time all star, but he also has the skills now to not make it off the bench. He HAS to land in a good spot (Denver or Golden State would be nice) in order to truly develop. But that lightning quick first step, that developing jumpshot, and the out of this world athleticism is enough for me. Either way, the defense is there for sure. Shows the potential of this class when Isaac Okoro + is going at this point.

Keon Johnson might be a star or a role player. He has crazy, absurd, athleticism but is still developing his jump shot. He seemed more comfortable with his shot creating as the season went by, and with his physical profile, to guard 1-3 and be a two-way wing, he''ll be a nightmare to defend in this league if he gets his three ball falling. Johnson also set the record for max vertical leap at 48 inches, which shows if he uses the athleticism well, he can be a really good finisher. However, he's still really raw, and is so far away from that coveted ceiling that I have to move him down to 20, along with the fact he may not reach the coveted ceiling.

6'5 with a 6'7 wingspan. Shooting 7 FT per 40, great on the attack, loves to get into the paint and force defenders to stop his short mid range game. Developing short mid-range game, sometimes leaves the 6-8 footers short and needs to add to his touch. Vs Kentucky on the attack he was entirely too much for BJ Boston to handle. High motor and pride level on defense. His dunk against Georgia shook me, I feel bad for number 10. Explosive dunker. Occasionally gets going off his jab step too soon and travels. 69% from FT, 29% from 3. Stroke needs work, mechanics wonky at this point. At times pushes his free throws and they end up flat as a result. Good hands and aggressive to the ball for steals. 1.8 per 40. Shifty driving, some nice looking passes. A guy who looks like he will be able to do a little bit of everything. Turnovers still too high, but makes sense for a freshman with his usage rate. LOVE the energy and defensive upside for this kid. Values his assignment over ball watching. Has a lot of work to do shooting and offensively to increase his value.

Tier 6 Floor - out of rotation Bullseye - key rotation player Ceiling - key 2-way starter with playmaking contributions

Keon Johnson is an extremely athletic, high motor guard who can do a little bit of everything. Johnson is great at making his presence felt on the court in anyway he can.

While still raw, Keon Johnson is one of the most explosive players in this draft. With his nice frame and great shooting, teams would love to have him.

Super athletic and great defender. Just doesn’t have much to offer on offense and as a scorer. Needs to work on that 3. And his rookie yr I think should be mostly in the G-league learning and developing before being a contributor in the league.

Keon Johnson has a TON of potential. Here is what he is good at.

Good driver/finisher and looks good midrange

Potenital for a secondary passer

Defense is good overall

Potneital is definitely their

Really athletic

However, he can be a little too foul prone, his 3 point shot isn't there, and his shot selection isn't great.

Positives

-Arguably the best athlete in the draft, ridiculous leaper, explosive, fast, hangs in the air and adjusts, had some great recovery blocks, spectacular the only word I can use to describe it

-An amazing on-ball defender, with his athleticism and hustle, seemed like he was everywhere at times, very laterally quick, navigates screens like a vet and stays active with his hands, has good feel to fall down when he feels contact from his driver (drew a lot of on-ball charges) has the potential to guard 1-3 in the NBA and bother the best of the best, got physical with big men inside

-Off-ball stayed attached to his man, communicated, made the right rotation most of the time, took many charges in the paint

-Effective in straight line drives, can change speeds well and use his athleticism to finish

-Very good feel and finishing as a cutter, was in the right spot a lot of the time, will be a dangerous off-ball weapon with a good playmaker in the NBA

-The mid-range dribble pull-up was his go-to move, high release point and a big leap made it tough to contest, used the curl screen to get to this spot as well

-Intriguing post game, had a crazy high release point on the post-fade, nice counter move where he goes under the defender and finishes

-Definitely has some playmaking upside, showed nice flashes in the PnR specifically, drive and kick potential

-His energy and effort is unmatched, constantly made winning plays, almost 2 offensive rebounds a game a result of his hustle

Negatives

-A bad 3 point shooter, didn't shoot much and some misses were off, shot can be a bit flat, an average jumper would unlock so much in his game

-Has to take some better shots at times, doesn''t consistently create separation leading to contested pull-ups and long post-ups

-Needs to clean up his shots around the basket a bit when going through contact, just controlling his pace and taking better angles on drives should improve this

-Decision making and ball control still a work in progress, not ready to be a high usage player on the next level yet

-A bit foul prone, plays very aggressive and needs to find a balance, not too much of a worry

Likely range: 6-10

Very raw but has tons of potential. Has similar tools to be a Jaylen Brown type of player depending on the team and situation he goes to.
