Bio: Gonzaga, April 18, 2002 (21), 6’6”, 208 lb, Wing

Stats:

Strengths:

  • Has amazing touch (particularly on floaters)

  • Shooting

  • Off ball movement

  • Fits well in a lot of different systems

Weaknesses:

  • Can struggle to get inside the paint

  • Doesn’t have elite playmaking

  • Not a killer defender

Rundown:

Strawther is someone who does Strawther things. He drains catch and shoot threes with a beautiful release where you always think the ball is going in. A take that not a lot have caught onto yet, is that Strawther has possibly the best touch in the draft. His floater game is incredible. Offensively he isn’t a major shot creator, but that won’t be his role in the NBA anyway. Another potential negative is his defense. When locked down, he is pretty solid. He just needs to stay focused and active. Overall, he looks like a very solid bet.

Julian Strawther can do it all on the court. He’s a mistake-free wing player that is ideal for an NBA roster. He might not do anything at an elite level but he’s league ready in every aspect. He was integral to the success of Gonzaga over the last couple of years. He was utilized as a shooter and slasher that could work on and off of the ball. He’s a great floor spacer who’s continued to progress every year in college. He is extremely reliable and can hit shots when he needs to make them. In the NCAA tournament, he was the go-to option to attempt the crucial shots and he delivered. He doesn’t shy away from the moment and this was clear in his game versus UCLA when he hit the clutch three at the end of the game and out-hustled his opponents to will wins. He really is a deep threat with legit NBA range. Gonzaga had him move off the ball all around the perimeter before locating a nice position. He’s an effective catch-and-shoot threat that should translate exceptionally at the next level from the perimeter. Teams can run him as a spacer in the pick-and-roll because of his exceptional touch. He works really well off of screens and he moves across the floor efficiently. He causes defenders to switch in a calculated manner that gets him open. This ability to find his spots despite primarily working off of the ball speaks a lot about how Gonzaga is coached but also about how he can conduct these plays wherever he’s asked to hover around the court. He also thrived as an off-ball cutter. He makes really sneaky drives to the basket and it’s clear he seeks out sneaky lanes to attack at. He finds mismatches and players to attack so that he can take advantage of his above-average athleticism. His vertical isn’t something that pops out on film but when he does use it it’s clear he’s a next-level athlete that won’t struggle in the league. He’s a physical player that can push to get to his position and even when he encounters a battle he can find a solution. His floater and mid-range game are legitimate options that work really well for him. He is very crafty and can get to his spot for a basket quickly. His offensive versatility and ability to score points without needing an on-ball role is really appealing and will be something teams will value a lot. He isn’t someone that will handle a lot of handling opportunities but he’s a nice connective passer. He doesn’t get assists but he isn’t a guy that turns the ball over. Defensively he proved that he is capable. He doesn’t put up very big defensive numbers and he isn’t the type of guy you are going to rely on for a lot of on-ball reps but he is a good team defender. He makes the right switches and reads to be an effective off-ball defender. He tries his best to block off passing lanes and shut down smaller players that are more shifty than him. The defensive impact he makes will mostly be on the perimeter because I'm unsure of how he will hold up physically against larger players in the paint. He has the size and length to contain wings well and should be a good player to have roam behind the arc covering three-point shooters. He stays aware of what’s going on around him and should be able to keep up with NBA pacing. He goes up to battle for rebounds despite being on the leaner side. He attacks the offensive and defensive glass at all times. He has a very high motor which is something a competitive playoff team can expect to keep going. The team that takes him is getting that plug-in piece that can impact a team on both sides of the court in key ways. Being a hustle player that can space the floor off of the ball is what a lot of teams look for in the wing position. Julian will be a valuable asset that is currently flying under the radar due to what might not be viewed as big production but I see his role as highly scalable for the next level.

Julian Strawther- Gonzaga (SF) Age: 21.2yrs 6’8 209 (Less playmaking Jordan Poole)

Weather can light it up from a distance. A quick confident release ready to pull from almost anywhere on the floor. He moves very well around screens and traffic to get room for shots or to come off screens and use a floater that he loves to utilize. Not going to create for others but can seriously stretch the floor and can score inside the three point line as well.

Clutch shooter who works well off-ball, knows how to be effective in a motion offense, and has the length to be effective on defense. Never developed into more of an on-ball threat, but was effective and hit a lot of clutch shots for Gonzaga.

You want to see an efficient trigger-happy player in this draft, just watch Julian Strawther play basketball. His jumper is awesome. Good elevation, nice release point, and lightning quick. His confidence is unlike any other, with the ability to shoot the three from anywhere. His efficiency in that department is outstanding, shooting 41% on five attempts per game, and he could be utilized in every different action (from spotting up and catch-and-shoots to pin downs and curls). He became better as the year went on when it comes to his off-dribble ability, and his threat as a three-point shooter allowed him to create more inside the arc. He shot 52% on all two point shots, and used his 10-foot floater as his main source of inside-the-arc buckets, shooting 61% on them in the last two seasons. He is a fine dribbler who has some tendencies to dribble a little too high, but I think it was good enough to where he did not look lost in space. I liked his ability to attack the glass. He was always one to crash on defensive rebounds, and that showed through his defensive rebound totals (198) and percentage (19.8%), both highest on the team. He was not a particularly good playmaker. It was not his role, necessarily, but I thought there were moments where he had tunnel vision, and he'll have to get that out of his head when he joins the league. He was bothered a ton by players who were more athletic than him, which makes me think he won't have much of a creator or initiator role at the next level. His defense was nothing inspiring, either. My biggest issue with him on the defensive end was his footwork; I found that to be spotty when both on the ball and when he had pick-and-roll defensive duties. I think he has a good frame and good length that makes me think he won't be a total cone on defense in the future, but he has some refinement to do on that end. I do not envision him doing too much as a creator and initiator given his lack of athleticism compared to everyone else, but Julian Strawther's shooting ability is truly elite. Combine that with his legit float game, he seems to be one the league's best role players if he puts things together.

Big time, effective shooter at Gonzaga Solid, fluid touch in the lane once he gets to his spots Really bulky, stiff frame for a shooting wing/forward Effective mid-range player, pure form Worked really well off screens in Gonzaga, versatile offensive piece Solid footwork to get his shot up, understands how to block out defenders in space Bit of an older prospect who didn’t get much time in the earlier stages of his collegiate career By no means a defensive prospect, very unseasoned and uncomfortable Not a physical driver and contact finisher, just gets dominated as he challenges the rim, especially against bigs Fluid and stable ball-handler, looks in his element Not the most intelligent off-ball defender, doesn’t “pistol”, always a bit off of his assignment, over helps Very poorly reactive to fakes and jabs, kills him at the point of attack Not an athletic player at all, can’t convert 1v1, laterally move and keep himself square with defender Has to cock his head back to see the rim whilst driving, inefficient move Clutch shooting, came up big, was unstoppable force Has some solid triple threat moves to create enough space from deep A bit handsy on defense, leans into player with body Really solid and relaxed float game Threat at all times from deep, in transition, off-balanced, etc. Strawther can drain it Literally has unlimited range. Would shoot 30% from Half-Court if nobody guarded him Came up so big in March Madness (specifically against UCLA), saved the team’s season with Clutch shot[s] Had bad misses when got too confident So fluid off-the-catch, gets his feet set fires with his pure form Short wingspan, doesn’t help when contesting shots vertically Gonzaga junior, took a couple years for Julian to become Timme’s “robin” Slow feet can’t keep up laterally with guards, moves to far back after separation moves, takes a while to recover Not a bad positional rebounder Quick release that can be so deadly immediately off-the-catch, gets his feet set pre-catch and shoots in a split second. Tough to guard Shooting translates to the free throw line

Tier 6b. Will stick in the league on behalf of his shooting. Can shoot the 3 spotting up, off movement, or pulling up. Rebounds the ball well. Average defender, at least has decent size, but isn't a good athlete with a smaller wingspan than you'd like for an off-ball wing. Not a playmaker or great defender, limiting his upside.
