Leonard Miller: 6’9.25” w/o shoes, 213 lbs, 7’2.25” wingspan 19.5 years old G League Ignite 16.9 ppg, 10.1 rpg, 1.6 apg, 0.8 bpg, 1 spg, 53.7% fg%, 30.4% 3%, 79.2% ft%

Overview: Leonard Miller was hyped up to be a point forward last draft cycle and returned a new man, a double double machine with unbelievable shooting splits measuring similarly to the rare Kawhi Leonard mould. Miller joins Kawhi Leonard, Tari Eason, OG Anunoby, and Patrick Williams as players who hit the parameters for size and length plus hand size. Impressive company. Miller as an 18 and 19 year old averaged 17 and 10, scoring even more toward the end of the year without star guard Scoot Henderson. Miller offers rebounding prowess, defensive versatility, positional versatility and budding shooting which would be his glaring weakness. Despite a funky release, Miller shot nearly 80 percent from the free throw line and managed to be extremely productive in an energy role with skills honed from his youth as a passer. Miller projects as an immediate contributor using defense and rebounding to get on the floor and he offers upside to play multiple positions on the front line.

Strengths: Unteachable excellent length and strength Big upper body Fluid with the ball Quick jumper Extremely active on glass and defensively. Miller had 38 dunks and 13 tips against grown men. Attacks the rim. Finished 75% in transition and 66% percent at the rim and not for lack of volume. 79% free throw shooter who showed capacity to improve game enormously in other facets with improving form Can pass as he played with ball in hand early in his career. Knows when to cut. Not many 6’10” 19 year olds can put up stats against pros. He did and didn’t get to show he can pass, rebound, dribble and shoot. Upside as pick and roll guy with ball skills to pass Weaknesses: Sub 30% from 3. Low release from deep. Not supremely explosive, more coordinated than twitchy. Commits a lot of turnovers trying to make things happen (but it means he can). What is his exact role?

Bio: G League Ignite, November 26, 2003 (19), 6’9.25”, 213 lb, Forward

Stats:

Strengths:

  • Scoring

  • Athleticism

  • Fluidity at size

  • Improving as a shooter

Weaknesses:

  • Shooting consistency

  • Looks rigid when handling the ball

  • Can be wild and get tunnel vision

  • Lacks defensive technique

Rundown:

Miller is a guy who came out of nowhere, and whether they’ve said it or not, everyone who sees him immediately thinks about Giannis. To be clear, he isn’t the next Giannis. However, his athletic energetic fluidity creates an idea of perceived upside. I love it. Miller can become a great player with his mix of scoring and athleticism. While he lacks technique at this point, there is no reason for his defense to be bad. Sky’s the limit.

Shades of: Less Shooting MPJ

Leonard Miller is a super elastic but janky forward with a tantalizing skillset. He was one of my favorite upside picks last year before exiting the draft. He was at the time a lengthy unknown high school phenomenon that was dominating against other players his age in Canada. I believed in his potential as a 6’11” raw talent with flashes of guard skills but it seems the story on him shifted once the draft combine happened. At the combine, he was clearly behind everyone in terms of ability and he seemed lost. This made draft people lose confidence in him but I continued to believe in his future and possible turnaround. He has looked very different this year with the G-League Ignite. Leonard has come in right away not trying to be a guard but to embrace his tools. He has really transcended when compared to himself from last year and has been a really productive player. He’s flourished as a nice long forward that can work well with his skills in the post. He’s developed a bag of go-to moves and really imposes his length on the interior. He’s a great athlete that barely has to put any effort in to go up and yam it right on someone's head. He’s able to get up to the rim with ease so he’s a nice lob threat and slasher even if he is occasionally sloppy. He has had some big numbers this year based on his ability to drive to the basket. At times he can look extremely stiff offensively, but I believe that with the right development he can use his burst to potentially pop out a bit more. He can use his size to push around other players at his position without much opposition. Miller works well in transition and on the fast break as an efficient, fast, offensive option. He takes really long strides and is ambidextrous with his handle even when moving quickly, but he does have some flaws. He sometimes messes up his footwork and can look a little jerky which makes me doubtful of how his abilities translate to the league but this is something that’s been on an upward trajectory so far. It seems he’s still trying to grow into his body as he doesn’t have full control of it all of the time. He is trying to get his body control down and capable but he’s not quite there yet and will need some experience before he might be able to truly make an impact. His half-court offense is messy at times due to tunnel vision and poor decision-making. He initially interested me because of his playmaking ability at his size but this has only appeared in glimpses. He’s never been a flashy passer but he really tries to put the effort in to be a distributor. He likes to be used as the handler in the pick and roll and in post-ups. He has good instincts with the ball in his hands and enjoys being a creator whether it’s for himself or others. Leonard has slowly developed as a shooter and he works well as a spot-up option from three despite not shooting much of a respectable percentage overall. The closer he is to the basket, the better his touch is. He has good form, or at least okay form, from all over the court which makes me hopeful for how he progresses. He can bring out a float and mid-range game that looks pretty stable and has been decently efficient. I think he will be at least a solid shooter moving forward, and if added, he could take his game to another level. Miller has been a big-time rebounder and has really embraced that part of being a larger player this year. He racks up boards without trouble on both the offensive and defensive glass and will most likely continue to produce in this aspect going forward. Defensively he’s inexperienced but has shown peeks into high-level talent on that end. His athletic tools help to give promise to his ceiling as a really big and impactful defender. He does get lost at times and teams recognize that quickly, especially on the perimeter. He’s still learning to use his body and can screw up assignments for easy baskets when he’s supposed to come in to block, despite having the ability to do so. He’s slow-footed but is good at poking the ball for steals. He reads passing lanes well and is great at generating transition opportunities. I love his upside on both ends of the court and I feel as if many have forgotten about him as a talent due to a sour taste in their mouths from last year's combine and the televised season opener where he was shaking off some rust. He’s a large two-way forward that has shown glimpses of a big-time future.

Leonard Miller has quickly rose up draft boards and has even been getting lotto buzz lately. He withdrew from last year's draft and joined the G League which turned out to be a career changing move. He has transformed his game throughout the year, becoming a better defender and rebounder, making him more ideal for NBA teams. He has shown flashes as a shooter with a solid jumper as well as good handles for his frame. He is a solid driver and is crafty. He's versatile defensively but may need to bulk up if he wants to be a good paint defender.

Shout paw jack-of-all-trades forward who can do a little of everything, but not great at one thing. Has potential to be a versatile defender to to size, but lacks elite athleticism and burst to be a true lock down/vertical defender. Can knock down open perimeter shots but needs to improve. Good handle for size. Needs to be more aggressive interior scorer though he has post moves. Good rebounder. Grab-and-go potential. Decent playmaking. A very poor man’s Lamar Odom.

Leonard Miller- G League Ignite (PF) Age:19.6yrs 6”10 215 (Jarred Vanderbilt)

A versatile defender who can switch onto nearly any position. Offensively he is a good athlete and rim runner/ finisher around the rim. His three point shot and form need a lot of work. It is not a pretty shot. has ball handling ability and has shown some ability to create for himself . He is also lethal in transition but for the most part his offensive game is going to need some work.

The career of Leonard Miller has been an interesting development. He originally entered last year's NBA Draft, then withdrew his name to become a member of the G-League Ignite team. Miller seemed to have a skillset that would resemble more of a ball-handling forward that is developing his own shot. He made a transition in play style to become more of a tough nosed defender with good finishing abilities, and that proved to be the right role for him and became a very nice surprise for that team. Even though his play style changed, some of his previous skills were still present as a relatively fluid ball-handler. I would not necessarily trust him to be a lead handler but is more than capable. His defensive length (6'10" with a 7'2" wingspan) and strength really stood out, and I think everything he does defensively is what will make him a draw. Averaging around a steal and a block a game, he is a disruptor on the ball. I also think he was excellent as a help defender, which was how he got a majority of his blocks. I think he is so locked in when on the ball or being a man away, but I think he falls asleep a little more than I would like, but I think his overall engagement on that end is great. I also thought of him to be a great rebounder, averaging nearly 8 defensive rebounds per game, which usually helped start the break. He averaged around 11 rebounds a game, but I think he is excellent at hustling and crashing, which not a lot of players have. His offensive game is strange. You would think with as good of a handle as he has, that he would fit the mold of a shot maker, and that is something he is just not comfortable with at all. A majority of his baskets will come at the rim, where 27% of his points came in transition (per Synergy). He really does run hard and flies at the basket. His offensive game is not very versatile, unlike his defense. He does not shoot many threes a game (two attempts per game on 33% three-point shooting) and just does not have the shooting, the form or playmaking acumen as of right now to be a factor on that end. Leonard Miller is a fun prospect, in all. He has the energy to be a very fun favorite to whichever organization he goes to. He has a good chance at being a role player who sticks around for a while.

  • Player Comparison: Shades of Jarred Vanderbilt and Thaddeus Young

  • Projected Draft Position: Picks 20-35

  • Best Fits: Boston Celtics, Memphis Grizzlies, Sacramento Kings, Indiana Pacers
