Rayan Rupert: 6’7” 193 lbs 7’2” wingspan 19 years old, New Zealand Breakers (France) 6.8 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 0.8 apg, 36.8% fg%, 31.2% 3%, 73.8% ft%

Overview: Rayan Rupert is a defensively oriented wing with untapped potential on both ends. Defensively, Rupert uses his 7’2” wingspan to his advantage poking the ball away and getting in passing lanes along with containing the ball. Offensively, Rupert has a developing shot and impressive playmaking instincts. Rupert did not get too many reps to show these fledgling offensive strides but has impressed teams and evaluators in workouts with his improved shooting stroke that was a bit rigid. Due to defensive stopper potential and mindset, Rupert could rise come draft day especially considering he missed valuable development time with a broken wrist.

Strengths: Point of attack defense. Switchable defender. Pressures full court and is a pest. Passing instincts. Free throw shooting makes potential for shooting growth believable. Good floater game. HAs experience running some pick and rolls. Improved shooting stroke. Secondary ball handler. Connective tissue on offense, stopper on defense.

Weaknesses: Hitch in shot during season. Must tighten handle to play with ball in hands. 23% on pullup jumpers. 28% on unguarded catch and shoots. Dip in jump shot. Struggles strength wise at the rim but will get stronger. Must gain weight to be true stopper on D. Missed plenty of time due to injury.

I’m tired of these "lanky" prospects, if you are over 6 ft and way under 200 you need to hit the gym asap, I’m 6,4 235 and even I am too skinny.

I love Rayan Rupert. He is easily one of my favorite players in the draft. Super fun defensive ace that has been a huge impact on the NZ Breakers, an organization that was at the top of its league. Unlike many past NBL prospects, he’s actually a rotational piece on a good team. He truly earned his spot in the rotation as a bit of a defensive, one-way, specialist over other experienced veterans. Being able to see him in a winning program has given a good window into how he could be used in the NBA and what he adds to a team. His tenacity on defense has been a standout trait along with his length. The way he dives for steals and pressures his man is really striking and could be very alluring when paired with his wiry frame, 6’6” height, and 7’3” wingspan. He has great hands and is good at using his length to be an absolute defensive pest. He is really intelligent when it comes to the point of attack on his man's dribble. The way he disrupts his opponent's handle is astounding for a player of his age. Rayan can also create offense through his defense by getting steals and turning that into transition opportunities. There have been countless instances where he creates a turnover and passes it out to start a fast break for his team. Although he sometimes can be too bold when trying to make the big defensive play, I think that this is very excusable due to his younger age and the more showy style of the NBL compared to the NBA. This occasional sloppiness is a byproduct of his age and experience which I expect will fade away quickly as he’s shown a lot of adaptability in the NBL. Despite starting off the season injured and missing two months, he was quickly able to get himself together and insert himself in the rotation and eventually the starting lineup. His experience on this contending level team will hopefully give him some ability as a connective tissue. Although he hasn’t been anything close to a bad decision-maker as of right now, I would like to see him improve to be that glue piece. He sometimes makes the occasional sloppy turnover that just cannot happen if he wants to be truly useful at the next level. Transferring some more of those winning qualities to his offense would be ideal when it comes to him seeing the floor as a solidified starter in the league. He can’t really work on the ball as he isn’t very good at using his opportunities to generate offense. He dribbles into nowhere far too often which can lead to situations that cause turnovers. Rayan is used mainly as a shooter and cutter due to his incapabilities which leads to him being far less effective in slower half-court offenses. He can score on craft finishes around the basket where he uses his length and finesse to contort the ball into the basket, but this can’t be one of his only forms of bucket-getting. His thinner frame stops him from thundering to the basket with vigor but he could easily add muscle to improve upon this. He has no problem with athleticism and he’s actually impressed with his way of making long, lengthy strides to the rim. He’s been a little inconsistent on offense but that’s to be expected with any young player, especially when placed in an older league. Despite this being in small spurts, Rayan has flashed shooting upside but this hasn’t been because of his three-point percentage as that’s been quite poor. His form looks good but it hasn’t been hitting at a consistent rate. He’s used largely in spot-up situations on the perimeter and has been pretty streaky. He’ll have a hot stretch of games every once in a while but that often quickly fades before he fades back to his norm. Part of his lack of stability may be due to injury but I wouldn’t completely point at that as the issue. He can’t really shoot off of contact either as he usually gets pushed back before he can create something. A part of that which I do like is the fact that he doesn’t take the stupid shot when he could. He passes the ball to others and knows when he doesn’t have the right look. His free throw percentage is quite assuring as that is usually a good indicator of a rise in three-point percentage going forward. Teams can work with him to really mold him into that lucrative all-around wing that has been valued so heavily over the past few years. Players of this typical 3&D archetype have been rising in draft and trade value so I can see organizations buying into his potential as one over some safer bets. If he can figure it all out, he’s the ideal talent that many have been drooling to get. I think that the Rayan Rupert love is really going to catch on as we get closer to the draft and as teams start to become infatuated with his play style.

Rayan Rupert is one of the highest potential wings in the class, showing his high upside out in France. He's a versatile 3&D wing with great length. His quick hands lead to steals and deflections constantly. He's not a consistent 3 point shooter but has shown promise. His ball handling and play making are underrated.

Rayan Rupert- New Zealand (SF) Age:19.1yrs 6”7 205 (Ousmane Dieng/ Nic Batum)

Long wing who has good defensive instinct and active hands to get steals. Rupert is extremely raw on the offensive end. He struggles from three and needs to be more consistent with his shooting mechanics. He is not that explosive athlete but has long strides and a good feel for the game and is an unselfish player looking to get the ball to his teammates. He needs to tighten up his handle as well but is smooth and crafty at times. Of course he is a player who is going to take some time but has good upside.

Lanky wing defender with developing offensive game. Can pressure full court. Quick feet and uses length to disrupt on-ball as well as off-ball. Decent handle and playmaking for size. Perimeter shot is improving. High potential as a point-of-attack defender and secondary playmaker who can hit occasional shots. Mickal Bridges-like

Having long arms is a nice trait to have. If you have long arms as a guard, you have immediate intrigue around the league, and I think Rayan Rupert's 7'2" wingspan is pretty nuts for a guard. He is 6'7", but I think his thinner frame makes it unlikely (right now) for him to fill out enough to become a forward. I say that with the thought that his strengths are best suited for a guard's play instead of a forward's. His length is extremely intimidating just by watching him play; combine his length with a very low and tight handle and quick feet and he is an issue if a defender presses up on him. I thought he was better when given space to operate. He is not a shot creator by any means, and has not shown too much playmaking (I'll give him credit as a pick-and-roll ball handler; he was good at reading the low man on those plays, making lobs at the basket or zips to the corner look second nature). I thought he was really good on the break, where I thought that his finishing around the basket on the break was consistent and gave me a lot of hope that this could eventually translate into half court offensive finishes. I saw a tendency to drive a left a little more (he is a righty) and the ability to finish well with both hands is a nice trait to have. To put it bluntly, I really don't like his jumper, in terms of the consistency with his form. There were many instances where he hitched on his jumper when he was in the air, and there were many instances where it was a smooth, natural jump shot. The inconsistencies with his form and maybe his confidence in his jumper sways me away from thinking that the shooting will immediately be great; he is massive project on the offensive side of things. His point of attack defense and pressing up on defenders is special. He generated only 0.7 steals per game, but his overall hustle and quick hands, as well as the teams 104 defensive rating when he is on the floor, shows plenty of promise to me from an on-ball perspective. It does not mean he has his issues; he bites at pump-fakes a lot and has a tendency to get into foul trouble. I also think he gambles a little too much as a help defender, which lead to some late team defensive rotations because his teammates were not expecting him to take the kinds of risks he took. There is good traits to take advantage of if you are a late first round, early second round team. His length and versatility is already pretty good, but if a team can polish his offense, Rayan Rupert can be a good rotation piece for a long time.

Role: Upside Defensive Wing - Defend Opposing Star (1-3)

  • great defender that likes to pick up full court and use his long wingspan to generate steals

  • high energy guy that has a high motor and is constantly engaged in the game

  • raw offensively. needs time to develop the shot.

  • with some time in the G League, he could be a good piece to any team as he can be someone to defend the best wings.

  • adding a 3pt shot is the major swing skill for Rupert
