Rationale: Spurs get the chance to pair Wemby with another potential top 10 player in Zion Williamson, all without giving up one of their own picks. They lose Harrison Barnes, who does not matter at all to the long term vision of this franchise, and Keldon Johnson, who while good, is no Zion. They also get some dude named Matkovic which is cool I guess. The Pelicans move on from Zion, who doesn’t play any games, for an arguably as good superstar in Trae Young, who does play games, as well as an actual starting caliber center in Deandre Ayton. They also give up Dejounte, which may seem like a big loss, but he is coming off a torn ACL and doesn’t fit with Trae so… They also get some dude named Mohammed Guye, which is cool I guess. For the record, I love Trae, and I think he wants to stay in Atlanta. However, this trade gives them the opportunity to rebuild with their own picks, which is an opportunity I don’t think they can pass up on. Keldon Johnson and Yves Missi are solid young pieces…

KCP can knock down open looks brought by the big three and Dyson Daniels can also score decently. On defense there are no weaknesses and JJJ plus Dyson Daniels will demolish teams and create havoc. When the worst defender on your starting lineup is KCP you are gonna lock teams up….

Atlanta Hawks Offseason…

Why Atlanta do it: The Hawks have sought a replacement for Capela. If they've identified Nurkić as that player, mission accomplished. The veteran is under contract through 2025-26 at $19.4 million, which helps Atlanta avoid a more significant, long-term investment at the position until it sorts out Trae Young's next contract (the point guard has a $49 million player option before 2026-27).

Hachimura gives the team a short-term replacement for Jalen Johnson, who is out for the season with a shoulder injury. Atlanta owes its first-round pick to the San Antonio Spurs, so tanking for draft position isn't an option. Hachimura will earn $18.3 million next season, giving the Hawks flexibility to decide which players best fit together (Zaccharie Risacher, De'Andre Hunter, Hachimura) alongside Johnson and Young.

The Hawks will stay under the luxury tax this season and next, which is part of their motivation for getting out of Bufkin. Bufkin is also done for the year with a shoulder injury and…

The Lakers get Onyeka Okongwu and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, the Magic get Trae Young, Terance Mann, and Jarred Vanderbilt, and the Hawks get Anthony Black, Jett Howard, Tristan Da Silva, Dalton Knecht, Rui Hachimura, Jonathan Issac, along with a stunning 6 1st round picks.

For the Magic, although at a steep price, they get their offensive engine for the next 6-7 years at least. Trae will be happy in Disneyland, and getting to throw dimes to Franz, Paolo, Jalen Suggs, and others is much better than Jalen Johnson. The Magic are ready to contend as soon as next season. An A- deal, as they could have gotten off with giving up less.
